That phone bill is ridiculous. How do you not take responsibility for forgetting to put it on airplane mode? Folks should just admit their own mistake and not blame others. I also got sick on WhitePass in Alaska from someone coughing. Made the rest of the trip miserable and my husband and I tested positive for Covid when we got home. I still carry masks for such situations and wore it during the rest of the trip and our flight home. I agree 100% about the refund for that passenger in the end.
Oh, come on. First, stop giving your phones to your kids. There are not toys! You don't need to be the best mom on board. Buy a fake phone tablet for your kid. Second, everyone knows, put your phone on airplane mode. Third, if you need to be #1 mom, then keep checking your phone to make sure you're on airplane mode. My phone cost $1300. I'm not a moron who hands it off to my kid. Yes, he's very responsible, but he's still a "kid." smarten up and pay your bill!
I love that people think that everyone in every location on the planet are sanitary, but become pigs as soon as they get on a cruise ship. These are the same people that you see at the store and every other place you go to, and if they don't wash their hands on the ship, guess what, they don't anywhere else, either.
I got a cold on our Alaska cruise in late May. But the weather was awful and most excursion were in the rain. I simply stayed away from other guests and took meds. I stayed in the cabin when it was really bad. No one else in my party got sick so I think I did a good job.
They not only have it in the instructions, it come's up on the phone, and they announce it over the loud speakers.. T-Mobile also sends it's users a text message telling them what coverage they have in the area they are..
My friend got covid on one of our cruises, I came home with the flu on another and my Dad died of a heart attack on another one but I never thought of blaming the cruise company on any occasion
I am retired military and I am shocked that Carnival disallowed the refund. I will be taking my 25th cruise with Carnival in June I am am shocked at the lack of concern!
If they make an exception for them, why not everyone?? Everyone has the potential to have some last minute occurrence pop up that stops them from being able to go.. I'm a veteran and come from a military family, but that shouldn't give a person special exceptions to the rules everyone else has to go by.. The odds are, they are actually national guard, because the "military" is not mobilized for local events, and the national guard was called up by the governor.
@@garybelew7813I believe the Serviceman’s Civil Relief Act (law to protect military members called to serve) will assist this military member with this situation.
Yup! My husband's I Phone did an update while were on the ship! He got a message from ATT letting him know to put his phone on Airplane mode. He screamed at me furious! When we ot home, ha ha , it was his phone!
Both my husband and myself got sick on our Alaska cruise in 2023. 🤧. It was the big C. Really sucked. But we don’t blame the cruise line or Alaska or the airlines lol. When we travel we don’t like the fact that we might get sick but it is what it is. It’s worth the risk, to us.
The cruise line should refund the military personnel for being activated into service. Being a military veteran, this a shame that as a cruise line that you would step up and give them the opportunity to rebook a future cruise at no cost with their full refund.
Lol, how many times does the cruiseline tell you to put it into airplane mode? They make several announcements. If they were sick 2 days in, they were ALREADY SICK. This is what the cruiseline gets, hahahaha. All these new idiots are cruising now..... Hahahaha, all the Kens and Karens are onboard, so what did you expect? Wahhhhh, I didn't put my phone in airplane mode, wahhhhh, Im sick, wahhhhh, I want biscuits and gravy and 2 lobster tails! WAHHHHHHH! Stop the cruises under 7 days! Lolololol... Carnival needs to refund it 100%. I do believe if JH can get the passenger a full refund, he will. Called to duty should be 100% refund. Greedy Corporations. They are getting a lot of bad press. They need to change the policy now.
They gave the phone to their kid to babysit the kid. If a kid saw that popup they'd ignore it assuming its ok cause their parent wouldn't make such a stupid mistake. Many adults would ignore the popup 1 or two, maybe three times if they saw it. But a kid would just assume it was covered and swipe it away. This is the parent's fault but I bet they yelled at the kid first before contacting the cruise line.
I would recommend that the military family contact John Heald and if that doesn't work, talk to a New Orleans TV News station. If the media publishes the story, I'll wager Carnival would make it right. Carnival makes it a point to market to military and veterans; not a good look.
I agree. That being said - we always buy travel protection because it’s not always clear if you’ll get a refund and we never know when orders will drop.
First story is a hard lesson learned. Get the kids tablets. Nasty people will cruise I'm OCD I avoid touching my food even with sanitized hands I also avoid food cruisers grab with barehands I never get sick.
I live in Canada. When I get on the flight in Toronto to leave the country I ALWAYS put my phone in airplane mode. That’s nobody’s fault but your own 🤦🏽♀️. The person who was deployed because of the NOLA situation NEEDS to be refunded 100%
During times when soldiers are activated they, by Law, must drop what they are doing and report for duty. They should have gotten not only a full refund, but a % off of a future cruise. They need to do better!
Cell phone - the person didn't follow the rules and wants someone to pay for their mistake? No. Denied. Getting sick on the ship. You in an enclosed space. You can't control others behavior. Take care of yourself. Passengers on a cruise are a microcosm of current society. Sorry you got sick, but you need to watch out for yourself. There is nothing stopping you from wearing a mask. Carnival needs to do better. That is unacceptable.
Carnival was offering a 75% refund... unacceptable. But our experience with Celebrity was even worse: One day before boarding the Silhouette last August, our daughter had an accident that required surgery and hospitalization, forcing us to cancel the trip. I called Celebrity to explain the situation, offering to send all the necessary documentation to request a rescheduling of the trip, even if it meant postponing it to 2025, considering that EVERYTHING was already paid for. Their response was as sad and disheartening as, 'Speak to your insurance; we’re not going to do anything.' After trying to follow up via email to file a formal complaint, I felt like I was speaking to an AI that kept apologizing but reassured me they didn’t expect to lose me as a customer. Cruise lines have everything sold out-they no longer care about humanity. It’s a shame to have experienced this.

Shameful and greedy behavior on Carnival's part. They should receive a 100% refund, some credit for their next cruise, and a sincere Thank You! Not Royal Caribbean's fault that the cruisers did not follow directions and put/keep his phone on Airplane mode. Expensive lesson for him. People with poor hygiene habits are why I stay away from the buffets.
I can’t make a judgement about Carnival because people don’t tell the full story and we don’t know everything. Who books a casino offer and doesn’t know how that happened? The cellphone bill is the persons fault 100%
Carnival's policy that gives 100% refund on natural disaster is likely because that would cancel the cruise completely. Being activated only affects one cruiser or family, (should still let the family go), so I can understand how the hole in the policy happened. I would think though that given the circumstances the issue would have been escalated. I understand that first tier support has to follow the letter of the policy but 2 or three tiers above that should have been able to recognize the extenuating circumstances and provided a full refund or some other equivalent compensation.
We all have extenuating circumstances and one person's shouldn't be more important than another. If you can't get a refund because you had a health scare or some injury before your cruise and can't make it is no different than not being able to make it because your military. Being military don't make you better than anybody else.
My buddy makes me put my phone on airplane mode and data turned off a hour before we leave a port. If you don’t do that then you catch a satellite! As for the military? I’m so sick of them acting like they deserve special treatment because they do what they are paid to do! They are on standby! That is there job. Flight attendants are also on standby and will lose there job if they don’t cancel a trip to make it to work on time
The cancellation policy is clear, you get no refund if you cancel less than 14 days prior to your cruise date.. They gave them 75% when they could have said, too bad.. I am a veteran, too, but that has nothing to do with it, anyone can have an issue at the last minute that stops them from going on a trip, and almost all of them have a no refund policy that close to a booking because they aren't going to be able to sell that cruise that close to leaving. I think they were lucky to get anything.
My cell phone carrier (Spectrum) won't let my cellphone use cellular data when a crusie ship leaves port. I'm sure it's only a matter of time until this excessive cellular phone bill issue for international data-roaming goes away.
I can’t understand why some people think being in the military and serving your country .Think back to the world wars and territorial wars that have happened in the past. These people are serving everyone of us who are still back home enjoying the safety of not being on the front line.Being in the military isn’t like having a job where you can stay at home do your job and still get paid. That’s why we still have Memorial Day Remembrance Day to remember the people who sacrificed for us to have what we have today. Lest we forget.
I got sick on The 4th sailing of carnival Jubilee something aweful they ruled out Norivirous and couldn't figure out what it was out of a 7 day cruise I got to enjoy 3 days of it! The rest was pretty much stuck in the cabin the rest of the cruise sitting on the toilet hydrating! My cruise date had no issues!
Cellphone Charges Cruisers fault 100% Can't blame Royal Caribbean for excessive cell charges because YOU didn't put your cell in airplane mode. There are multiple reminders to do so before the ship leaves the port. Not the cruise lines fault you use your cell as a babysitter. ~ Illness during cruise Cruising has proven many times in the past to be a floating petri dish. People are always getting sick on cruises. Getting sick 48 hrs into any vacation, cruise, or any other time, 99% of the time you were already carrying whatever bug it was that made you sick. ALWAYS take extra precautions for your own health and safety. Not everyone washes their hands on a regular basis, AND many don't wash right before they eat, let alone before entering a buffet line or dining venue. ~ Canceled cruise due to call to duty Personally, I feel that the military member who got called into duty due to what was happening in New Orleans should be reimbursed 100% for their cruise. Carnival bosts about being supportive to our military and should have shown said support with 100% refund. Yet another reason on my list as to why I don't care to cruise with Carnival.
Every now and then I do get sick. But RCCL does everything they can to sanitize the boat. It’s constant and when you start seeing people coughing then stand by because you’re gonna get the dreaded kennel cough. Just sayin.
Ok so they had insurance through Carnival or was it 3rd party insurance? Cause the 3rd party offers 75% on cancelation if you have cancel for any reason. If they got it through Carnival CCL needs to give them a 100% refund. I mean how much would the additional 25% be? $500 at most vs all the bad PR they have to go through? Carnival needs to fix this for this person.
Just Days Til Our First Cruise of 2025 .... I Disconnect the Phone and it goes in the Safe till Disembark Day . i'm with You Jayson , John will step in and make it Right ... But that should have been a ''' NO BRAINER ''' !! Have a Great Day ..
First story, shame on parents for not putting phone in airplane mode and giving it to your kid! You’re responsible for the cell phone bill! And second story, sorry you got sick but that’s the chance you take! And then lastly, shame on Carnival for not refunding his money! I hope the brand ambassador sees this and makes it right. Shame shame Carnival!!!
Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought Carnival supported our military. This one really got up my craw. I have been on Royal and Celebrity. I have two more Royals and an MSC booked for 2025. With everything I have been hearing about Carnival lately and especially this current issue, I don't think I will even give them a try.
When you go to the hotels, you have to do the same thing you have to put it on airplane mode and then put it on Wi-Fi. That’s the only way you can use your Wi-Fi. That’s his own fault.
Man.. if only this thing called.. “researching before you book a cabin” existed…. that would’ve helped. 😂. Stupid is as stupid does. Does a child stop logical grown adults from looking into WHAT THINGS MIGHT COST?
Cruise lines should provide passengers with clear and simple instructions on what to do if you buy the WiFi package, as a warning note when they sign up.
Money talks and BS walks. If you really believe Carnival should have refunded that service person who missed his cruise 100%, write John Healf a letter. I even drafted it for you. “I’ve gone on X Carnival cruises in Y years but will never go on another until Carnival refunds the serviceman who got called to duty after the New Orleans disaster 100% of his fare.”
STOP freaking out about people getting sick. DIDN'T do this shit before Covid Just Stop. Had a sinus infection at the end of a cruise. Had Covid at the end of our Alaska Cruise, spent 4 wonderful days walking Vancouver with Covid. We just didn't tell anyonec😂😂😂😂.
I do think that all cruise lines should have the captain announce before departure to set phone to airplane mode.. it would be nice to remind people before hand
I've been on 8 cruises, the first three were before they had wi-fi on board, on all the rest, the cruise director announced several times to insure that your phone is in airplane mode, it also comes up on the app in the directions on how to connect to the ships wi-fi, and it is on the card in your cabin as well. Ignorance is no excuse.
On most phones, putting them in Airplane mode will disable both cellular data and WiFi. So the cruise line provided an invalid instruction which was ignored and the ship's WiFi failed to the point where the phone switched to using cellular data, there could be a legit legal case to be made. On the other hand, if the cruise line clearly stated that cellular data must be disabled, then it's on the customer although if the WiFi wasn't functional on the ship, they could reasonably rrequest a refund for the cost of the WiFi package.
After you put the phone in airplane mode, you can turn wi-fi back on manually. It disables the use of mobile data and phone calls, but allows you to connect to the only wi-fi network available, which is the ships. The directions they provide are real clear, at least on Carnival.
*Airplane mode* automatically deactivates your own WIFI land carrier, then it will pick up the WIFI package you paid via the cruise line…simple enough to understand.
Caught covid on my last cruise.. day 4 of my 7 day lady at dinner was hacking and I said I'm gonna get sick. The morning I left the ship I was on deaths door it felt like. Then had to drive from miami to NC I will wear a mask in September when I go again
I think the $1300 phone bill is Royal Caribbean's fault. I wouldn't be surprised if RC and the phone companies are in cahoots together. Also it's a shame that the cruise ships don't care. They should post signs everywhere. Put phones on airplane mode. When passengers check in the agent should remind people and they could write it on a paper that says don't forget.
Oh so because the person is military Carnival has to do better but if it's just some joe schmo with a normal job and something important comes up and can't make it's tough crap and are told they should of gotten the insurance. Being Military doesn't make you better than anybody else. We all should get refunds or none of us should. Being activated by your military is no different than someone who has a massive health issue like a heart attack before a cruise and can't make it..We all have sad stories but rules are rules. You said he had insurance why didn't he use it?
I agree with you, and I am veteran.. I feel for the person, but that could happen to anyone, and if they make exceptions for one group, everyone that has a last minute incident in life will expect the same.
I say no refund! Not carnivals problem. That’s what insurance is for. If insurance doesn’t cover it, then they can submit an expense reimbursement request to the whatever government entity stopped them from cruising. Maybe they’re just screwed. Too bad for them.
Exactly sick of people acting like certain people with certain job titles makes them superior to others. Most people have jobs or life events that happen and can't make it and if everyone can't get a refund then nobody should point blank period. If I have stroke before my cruise and can't make it do you think anyone would give a crap? NO! they'd say you should of bought the insurance.
Unless the person was conscripted - then why the hell should being in the military mean that they can flout any rules of purchase? Joining the military is a career choice, and frankly if they are on active duty and their employer cancels their holiday entitlement then its the employers responsibility and not anybody elses. Frankly, its not the cruiselines fault here.

You say to put it in WiFi mode when I think you meant to say airplane mode.
No. People just want someone elsewhere to take responsibility for their negligence.
Just kerp ignoring the text, that you are being charged roaming for data.
Cellphone Charges
Cruisers fault 100%
Can't blame Royal Caribbean for excessive cell charges because YOU didn't put your cell in airplane mode. There are multiple reminders to do so before the ship leaves the port. Not the cruise lines fault you use your cell as a babysitter.

Illness during cruise
Cruising has proven many times in the past to be a floating petri dish.

Canceled cruise due to call to duty
Personally, I feel that the military member who got called into duty due to what was happening in New Orleans should be reimbursed 100% for their cruise.
I Disconnect the Phone and it goes
in the Safe till Disembark Day . i'm with You Jayson , John will step in and make
it Right ... But that should have been a ''' NO BRAINER ''' !! Have a Great Day ..
Carnival owes the full refund plus some big compensation!
AGREE he should get 100% plus
Got sick 3rd day of 9 day cruise and got covid on two previous cruises… fortunately at the end of the cruises
I’m with you. People who serve our country/ their community deserve better. Shame on Carnival
For the 3rd story Carnival is wrong for this. John Heald probably will escalate the situation .
I will avoid Carnival because of how a fellow military member is being treated.
Carnival is wrong they should give 100% back. As for Royal Caribbean cell phone they don’t owe that person a dime.
duh.... people should know about turning your phone to airplane mode while on a cruise....
Fully the passengers fault. USE THE AIRPLANE MODE!
I cought a cold day 4 of 7
Not the cruise line fault
Cellphone - guest responsibility
Sick - they should have worn a mask if they were seeing others sickly
Military- OMG carnival is absolutely wrong.
how do you fix stupid
Carribeans Cruise is een bijzonder slechte rederij: Vorig jaar na een Cruise in IJmuiden van boord gejaagd, zonder enig excuus.
Some people should stay off of cruise ships.
@@garybelew7813 I have been on quite a few never heard it...but then again... I may hav missed it
On most phones, putting them in Airplane mode will disable both cellular data and WiFi.
Carnival do better😢😢😢😢
Caught covid on my last cruise.. day 4 of my 7 day lady at dinner was hacking and I said I'm gonna get sick. The morning I left the ship I was on deaths door it felt like. Then had to drive from miami to NC I will wear a mask in September when I go again
refund military
I think the $1300 phone bill
is Royal Caribbean's fault. I
wouldn't be surprised if RC
and the phone companies are in cahoots together. Also it's a shame that the cruise ships don't care. They should post signs everywhere. Put phones on airplane mode. When passengers check in the agent should remind people and they could write it on
a paper that says don't forget.
Nah - parents' fault. Anyone with a brain knows to put it in airplane mode.
Why even bother bringing kids on a cruise just to play on cell phones all day? Just stay home.
