well, those tires are for all seasons. so it won't work well for off road. here is the problem. you stop in the middle of hill, then try to restart. that doesn't work like I said. you should keep speed all the way from start without stopping. that's what you go up the hill with all season tires.
I'm not sure if the driver has a good handle on the car's systems. Any tricky hill should be attempted with ESP off..... 4WD on.......and a good run-up. From the get-go. Shouldn't even have to think about that.
+Everyman Driver - that point when you were trying to get up the hill in the soft sand. Maybe try keep it in 4WD and turning TRAC off.... just an idea, its worked for me in some situations to get a bit more wheel spin when I needed it. Keep up the great work.
+Emeka Ossai I was thinking the same thing. Not sure how KIA's system works, but in general it cuts power to the spinning wheel, doesn't typically keep track of HOW many wheels it's cutting power to. In our JSW it's cut both tires (fwd), and you're going no where. On a snowy side road it gets turned off every time.
It’s so funny, reading all the comments. It’s not the vehicle’s fault, it’s not the sand, it’s killing me.........poor guy. Yeah, we own this Sweetheart, too. And, has our stamp of approval and we have heavy snow for five months of the year.
I'm a truck guy and like off roaders. Latest off roading gizmos these days were like more icing on a cake for me cause somtimes since there's no way we'll know if it works as advertised. In my 20 years experience off roading, I suggest to turn off the latest gizmos like traction control or ESP and only the 4wd system or lockers if it have is ON.and the engine of course. One more, if you go play soccer, wear football shoes not ball room dancing shoes. In off roading, use the right tire for it
A thought, the sx is a performance minded tune. You have good street tires. You can't expect to off road with street tires, 19 inches with 40psi of air in them...
Liked a lot this video! Looking to buy a Sportage here in Canada and it gives me peace of mind to see what this vehicle is capable of! So glad I have found your channel Dave!
+Ginette Gagné In Canada, I'd be more impressed with a driving in snow test. That's far more likely for most consumers in Canada than off road on dirt going up hills.
+Carlos Choy As a fellow Canadian (northern Alberta) I couldn't agree more. Have a JKU for dealing with the winters and now my wife wants something small and practical without spending loads of money. This Kia seems to fit the bill.
Really enjoyable to watch, thanks for showing us that gauntlet, it was pretty impressive. Note: We pay $20,000 more for the same, pretty much the same anyway, vehicle here in Australia, really sucks.
I've had 3 Kia's over the past few years and recently went from the Kia Sportage to the new 2016 Optima SXL. And what i found out from my 2015 Sportage is they are amazing off road and i know that it can do that hill climb. But for the car to be able to do it is you have to hold the traction control button for 5-8 secs for it to deactivate stabilatrac and traction control system because it will limit what the car will do because in all honesty the manufacture puts too much faith in the traction control then the car itself because the car has the power but as soon as it senses the slip it limits the power and everything and yes you did deactivate the traction but you did not deactivate the stabilitrac i don't belive. that will allow the car to spin the tires with the AWD system still activated. once you do that it will climb that hill with no problem. love your videos tho they are amazing watch them every week!!!!!!!!!!!
If you need TH-cam to tell you to disable traction/stability control to be able to get wheel slip then I suggest reading the owner's manual of any car that has it - they will explain it for you - also when trying to go up a dirt hill, assuming you would like to reach the top, the usual practice is not to come to a complete stop halfway - perhaps this is your preferred method I don't know - please enlighten us on your successes so far...this is a good example of someone ( and I see them in the ditch here every winter ) thinking that AWD allows you to do anything anytime anywhere....if you need more clarification Consumer reports has a decent video explaining what and what not AWD can and will do...
Ok for one, I own the same sportage, I live in canada and deal with snow and when I want to play I turn on the 4 wheel locking diff and shut off the TCU... It never lets me down and thats on the tires the vehical came with from factory. I never need to take 3-4 runs in any condition .
It so hard to tell what he was doing with the awd system. I find this review channel aggravating with the hap hazard off-road testing and trying to guess at how the vehicle acts and if in a different mode would it be able to get up the hill? This video makes the Sportage look like it just stops itself and that's it. I hope this is due to the traction control being left on, but maybe it is a limitation of this new awd system. You would think that with traction control off and the 4x4 lock on all the momentum would have carried it up the hill but it looks like the traction control was taking power away and causing it to stop quickly. Really hate all that sensor driven awd BS in cars nowadays. Very gimmicky. My car in the winter under snowy conditions I have to shut traction control off because it will not allow me to accelerate turning through an intersection sometimes it will want to slow the car and that can be super dangerous. That's a trait of traction control though, it can not think that well.
I'm sorry this came out wrong I was late to see you test drive the Ford Edge and put the cameras in like you did the sport it and give me your review I appreciate what you're doing very much thank you
Dave, I think you'll find that while most of these SUVs have fine mechanical off road features, they will all wear the same Achilles's heel... tires made for soft highway driving and not off road sand and mud forays.
I love your awd videos but was looking for a model that might not be able to pass the gauntlet. What are your opinions on the Suzuki SX4 crossover? I am not even sure if it is still marketed in the States.
Honest feedback - you’re supposed to turn off the TC, the other thing is, you DO NOT have the proper tires for that type of affronting, regardless of it being light. I have a front wheel drive vehicle that can kill those small inclines, but I have AT tires.

I would have liked to see you go through that last path using the normal AWD that controls the power to wheels instead of the lock mode. If the intelligent system works right you should not need the lock mode. Also Kia doesn't mention if this SUV has adaptive cruise control. Thanks for the video.
AWD for this cross over benefits Basic Economy Commute/Four season State. For demo purpose in this segment your gonna need a different type of vehicle. Dont know why you would, but doing heavy off roading with your average family/work/grocery AWD Cross Over is not the best choice to climb sandy rocky hills or any type of rough terrains that defeats the purpose the vehicle. No pun intended, but just because it's AWD we're gonna climb Mt. Kilimanjaro? C'mon man😁
The tire. Setup is just wrong for this video. Also owning one its great in the snow. Sure it gets a little tail happy under power, but then I know the rear drive works!
Mazda CX5, it looks way better than any Korean,Japanese car inside and out, has amazing technology, fuel economy, and only it and the Volkswagen Tiguan feel like sporty cars not mini vans.
compared to average sedans and competing brands, how good is this car in bumpy pavements? Saudi roads are worse than a dry wild volcanic land while driving a dodge viper with bare metal rims on it! (not exaggerating a bit!). only XXL pricy SUVs are good here and I can't afford them. thanks.

It always seems like this guy never understands the all wheel drive/four-wheel-drive system of these vehicles and he just does it on the fly hoping for the best. If you’re trying to keep momentum up a steep hill in four wheel lock, you probably want to disengage the all wheel drive system so it doesn’t slow your vehicle down losing momentum up a steep hill as the wheels start to slip.
If you want to climb hills buy a Toyota 4Runner or other real SUV with a part time or full time 4WD system. AWD systems are great for on road low traction situations but don't even begin to approach the usefulness of a real 4WD system.
Look... I know your comment is three years old... But what's the difference between 4WD and AWD? Everything I see says they're the same. Only Teslas with three motors have the option to supply power to the front axle and two rear wheels. How do combustion engines deliver power to all four wheels in a 4WD system, as you stated? I understand your comment is way past due, I won't be offended if you don't feel the need to reply.
It has a central differential lock (like some SUV's have). But it is totally useless with front and rear open diffs and a AWD system that doesn't know how to properly distribute power 4:46. I mean, its a Kia after-all... Last Kia I had, the door handle fell off...
drdpetrie Greenskeeper my Suzuki SX4 AWD has same lock mode , with open diff. but it's completely different car when it's come to off road forget about Jeeps tacomas etc, that would eat that hill like ...
+ Santa Joe Pretty sure that if this car had rally tires, it would climb all these hills w/o any problem. It also comes up what tires you have. So I don't think this was an excuse bro.
I like to see you test drive the new Ford Edge and do the same thing that you're doing with the Kia Sportage I like you reviews on the cars thank you very much for doing that
Even if they give a car awd does not mean it's meant to go off road. This awd is not the best o this car this car was meant to drive in the city and in rain snow on the concrete not for camping lol
For Koreans the Hyundai AWD is much better, Japanese got a great bunch of AWD, the Subaru,Mazda,Suzuki, and to a lesser extent Nissan. Germans have Volkswagen 4Motion, Audi quattro who when tested almost rival Subaru.
2.4 L 180 hp base and lx. /2.0 Liter, Turbocharged Horsepower 240 I hate this fuel economy craze. They're putting in lawn motor engines and slapping on turbo chargers. The car isn't light weight by any stretch of the imagination. It's heavy and bulky and has a boat motion feel at turns.
i don't understand your point... isn't it a good idea to downsize the engine and put a turbo? By doing so, you get fuel economy for daily driving and still decent performance (turbo/torque) when needed.
Maxxlenoxx It's not a lightweight vehicle. And when I drove this vehicle, real world numbers were below 16 miles to the city. I wasn't driving hard or doing high revs. There was turbo lag ( and the effects of the turbo weren't kicking in until about you hit 4000 rpm on lower gears, which essentially defeats the purpose of the turbo if your needing to have to push the little engines hard. The body roll was another issue all together. In the end they still charge premium dollar for a vehicle that isn't premium performance for it's class. In actually the manufacture walks away with a bigger payday cause smaller engines are cheaper to make, even with turbos. If they offered true adjustable rugged suspension, gave v6 twin turbo. I can the price they're asking as being justifiable. But for the price and what it offers no.
I haven't tried the new Sportage yet. But I still think it's a good idea for manufacturers to downsize the engines and put a turbo. They just need to find a good balance between the engine and the chassis. Hyundai did a really good job with the Tucson 1.6T DCT (195 lb-ft @ 1500RPM). Nice combinaison of fuel economy (23mpg city/30mpg highway) and performance (0-60mph/7.5s).
Although I agree *most* people who own these little CUVs never take them off road, that KIA is pretty useless as an "off roader". Probably perfectly fine for what it will get used for by 99% of the population. If you want a small off road worthy SUV, buy a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. Thanks for the off road test videos Dave!
Very few automakers have vehicles that owners actually take off road. Kia is not one of them. Your more likely to see a Jeep, Land Rover, or Subaru owner actually take their cars off road. There are plenty of videos of those cars off road.
Looks like even with traction control off very little power is going to the wheels. Not sure what is wrong with that Sportage but I hope Kia doesn't set them all up that way or you won't be able to go anywhere offroad! Terrible offroad ability!
I subscribed because you kept all the Kia failures in your videos which I respect. But saying crap like "my fault" and "gets my stamp of approval" is a little off putting after failing 3 bunny hills.
Dude learn how to drive, I thought you were drunk. As far as the argument of off roading reviews it's great because there is a big market for hikers, campers and outdoors person will want an all terrain suv to get them there. Not a Dave hater this just wasn't one of my favorites when I saw it was a KIA I didn't get my hopes up :)
Except my 2013 Sportage has yet to be defeated by a hill, deep mud, or snow. So I'd have to say that they're more capable than you think. The one in the video likely has tires that are unable to handle climbing up anytime but a dry hill. When I got new tires with teeth on mine, Hills were almost effortless. Additionally, it's important to turn of the traction control when climbing.
+Jordan Jolley I just don't think anyone thinks off road capability. I do know that tires make a huge difference and that traction should be turned off, hence why I said "learn" how to drive. My Land Rover Discovery Sport would have been up that hill in 2 seconds.
+NYRangers911 your Land Rover is engineered specifically for off-roading hence the name. However, even with the wrong tires your Land Rover will struggle in many situations.
Limited by the nut behind the wheel rather than the cars ability
you're supposed to have the traction control off
I appreciate the honesty of this video with showing the failed uphill attempts instead of simply showing the Sportage's highlight reel.
well, those tires are for all seasons. so it won't work well for off road. here is the problem. you stop in the middle of hill, then try to restart. that doesn't work like I said. you should keep speed all the way from start without stopping. that's what you go up the hill with all season tires.
its centre differential lock mate.. makes both front and rear wheels spin/ rotate at the same speed
I'm not sure if the driver has a good handle on the car's systems. Any tricky hill should be attempted with ESP off..... 4WD on.......and a good run-up. From the get-go. Shouldn't even have to think about that.

Exactly.. the traction control is not going to work well in many off road conditions.. just not designed for that.
It’s so funny, reading all the comments. It’s not the vehicle’s fault, it’s not the sand, it’s killing me.........poor guy. Yeah, we own this Sweetheart, too. And, has our stamp of approval and we have heavy snow for five months of the year.

Yet another great review, thanks. This Sportage does have my interest, ground clearance a bit low but still curious.
Liked a lot this video! Looking to buy a Sportage here in Canada and it gives me peace of mind to see what this vehicle is capable of! So glad I have found your channel Dave!

take traction control off and then no problem.
If you push and hold the charged control button it'll also turn off stability control and that'll help as well
Really enjoyable to watch, thanks for showing us that gauntlet, it was pretty impressive. Note: We pay $20,000 more for the same, pretty much the same anyway, vehicle here in Australia, really sucks.
Those tires are really crappy for that surface.
My Sorento with locking dif works great. You can't go 4 wheeling with street tires and expect to get good traction.
I've had 3 Kia's over the past few years and recently went from the Kia Sportage to the new 2016 Optima SXL. I don't think this guy has a clue about most vehicles he tests which makes them pretty much useless as a review...
Where's your youtube review channel to show us all how it's done?
It is useless giving shit to those negative comments. I respect your new several challenges. Thank you for another great review.

Which one would be a better buy for reg street driving but occasionally light, to medium light off road ? This kia or a 16+ Jeep Cherokee ?
so it will just stop spinning the tires if it can't go up a hill?
It so hard to tell what he was doing with the awd system. I'm sorry this came out wrong I was late to see you test drive the Ford Edge and put the cameras in like you did the sport it and give me your review I appreciate what you're doing very much thank you
Motor is shutting it down so it won’t damage the transmission, not impressed. & is this awd or part time awd. ?
Dave, I think you'll find that while most of these SUVs have fine mechanical off road features, they will all wear the same Achilles's heel... tires made for soft highway driving and not off road sand and mud forays.
Why would you off road with the traction control on? The tires dont really help either. If you want your tires to spin turn off the traction control.
I love your awd videos but was looking for a model that might not be able to pass the gauntlet. What are your opinions on the Suzuki SX4 crossover? I am not even sure if it is still marketed in the States.
So you took the vehicle to Costco, how does Melissa compare this vehicle to the Hyundai Tucson?

Thanks for the review - from Singapore. A pity our local dealers do a bad job for Kia - not even being able to pay for an upgrade!
Zac wtf you can afford a car there?
it's super expensive.
I would have liked to see you go through that last path using the normal AWD that controls the power to wheels instead of the lock mode. If the intelligent system works right you should not need the lock mode. Also Kia doesn't mention if this SUV has adaptive cruise control. Thanks for the video.
Whole Witt agree. In snow, 4 wheel lock is much worse than letting the AWD do its thing.
"It's not due to lack of ability....." YES it is, lack of driver ability
Great video! Can you please review the 2017 Kia Sorento SXL?
you need a proper 4x4 rig with center, rear and front diff locks. that can conquer any mountain.
Also owning one its great in the snow. Sure it gets a little tail happy under power, but then I know the rear drive works!
Dave, you need to get a CX5 and see if this happens again under the same conditions. It will be a great comparison.
Mazda cx5 2.5l AWD or Kia Sportage 2.4l AWD? What is better?
kia is better asked mazda has a rotary engines
WTF?
Mazda CX5, it looks way better than any Korean,Japanese car inside and out, has amazing technology, fuel economy, and only it and the Volkswagen Tiguan feel like sporty cars not mini vans.
Its not the car that is bad, its the driver.
Lock into a gear, turn off traction control and let the momentum carry you over the hill.
compared to average sedans and competing brands, how good is this car in bumpy pavements? Saudi roads are worse than a dry wild volcanic land while driving a dodge viper with bare metal rims on it! (not exaggerating a bit!). only XXL pricy SUVs are good here and I can't afford them. thanks.
My favorite type of video from Dave... Been waiting for this one
Offroad/AT Tires would likely help because it sure looks like the ones on it are just All Season or Mud and Snow. As they say... I'm just saying.

Are you going to do any offroad video of the fiat 500x trekking ?
Dave are you gonna be in the New York auto show on Friday?
I don't think that tyre thread is helping and try putting the Traction Control OFF in AWD.
I guess a couple of guys said that already
Man yo should be on ESPN you have a good Sport voice...
The fact is with proper tires the Kia would have made it up the hill.
And proper driver.
how much would have A/To tires on the Sportage helped in the sand?
Ryan Hamilton considering the sx has low profile performance tires probably summer based on where he is, it would have been way better.
This vid proves one thing...There's a blurred line between Dave's dancing and Dave's being bounced around.
let's hope that they have improved the 2.4 engine my 2012 kia is currently sitting at kia waiting for a new engine with less then 39,000 on it
Good review Dave. How about a driving in snow test?
+Carlos Choy He probably can't do that, at least not this time. It's spring there at WA :)
There's mountains in WA where he could find snow.
It always seems like this guy never understands the all wheel drive/four-wheel-drive system of these vehicles and he just does it on the fly hoping for the best. Just a warning. I looked under my Sportage and there is a plastic gas tank and no protection at all. No skid plate.
Driver error! :)
yes indeed
Subaru would have gone right up it Dave.

Can someone tell me if his doors are still fine? 11:15
First time I've seen this guy, did he normally do off-road videos. You reckon he knows about letting air out of the tyres for soft sand?
that's really funny that you kept on justifying the failure of this car to climb that hill. it looks like you really love the kia.
+Santa Joe LOL
+ Santa Joe Pretty sure that if this car had rally tires, it would climb all these hills w/o any problem. It also comes up what tires you have. So I don't think this was an excuse bro.
+Santa Joe I don't think there's any vehicle that's going to climb through that schlock in 19" all-season street tires.
I was just kidding guys....lol
Oh ok, lol
u dont stop in the middle of the slope and start again . Jeez
he didn't stopped, the car stopped, lokks like a underpowered car.
@@90210sky enough power, not enough experienced driver.
Used one offroad in the mohave - did just fine. Awd, diff lock and TC off - crawled up and over everything.
Go watch a intro to off roading video man.
4wd ON
traction control OFF

Technology is no good for off roading because it can not understand the conditions, only u as a human can see and understand different circumstances.
haha way to make a car look bad.. turn traction control off lololol
The car is terrible off road, the AWD system sucks, plenty of videos show its flaws.
Intrepid Milotic I agree , its practically a mini van
have you ever even driven offroad before?
Hehehe Amateur! You wouldn't last through one icy New England winter :) Traction control is for Road driving, and not Off Road driving.
bobdadruma I can’t believe what a big amateur I am, thank you so much, Rick!
Those tires weren't helping you either. I wouldn't think of leaving pavement in those tires.
Looks good, but don't take it off road
Wow.....not impressive. And tires really aren't appropriate for an all-wheel-drive suv. I was expecting alot more from the new Sportage.... :(
nice car, but i personally think this car is not for that hardcore off roading
+Ehgus Rnjs yep it is crossover for city and easy off roading, curbs and snow weather. If you live somewhere in WA state it definitely for you.
EVERYONE MOVE OUT IT'S THE OFF ROAD VIDEOOOOOO😲😲
Dude, don't get me wrong but you don't know how to drive. Your traction control was on.
Need 6 cylinder
Im compelled to say the AWD sucks for $1,800+. Good to know.
Looks like even with traction control off very little power is going to the wheels. Not sure what is wrong with that Sportage but I hope Kia doesn't set them all up that way or you won't be able to go anywhere offroad! Terrible offroad ability!
This car is obviusly not Landrover and anyone who expects that it will work fine in this situation is a morron
No soft sand.....it’s a Kia
Too soft for those tires.
Use All Terrain Tire, help you crawling dude
that never happens to a land roover
Really? Check out Automobile magazine's latest update on it's four seasons disco sport...had to be rescued by a Macan of all things. Ha Ha
I subscribed because you kept all the Kia failures in your videos which I respect. But saying crap like "my fault" and "gets my stamp of approval" is a little off putting after failing 3 bunny hills.
Mike D thanks
The Kia was slowing down because of traction control thus limiting performance offroad. Turn it OFF.
My reply was for Mike D.
+Jordan Jolley not really because I have mud tires but thanks, I know its a great car.
SPORTIG NOT GOOD FOR OFFRODING IT'S JUST A CAR NOT SUV
not the brightest but he is attractive!
I WAS going to buy one, thanks God I saw this video on time. Never seen a car which simply stalls on a hill.
Every time you try to drive up a hill you crap out.. stop going off road your guff.
Why you americans call it 2017 Sportige when its 2016?
the model years are always from next year. I'm sure its just a marketing thing.
Because America gets new cars later than everywhere else so it's a 2017 here. When it was out later in Canada, Europe etc. America sucks that way.
Or I mean out earlier in other countries*
batonce because its the model FOR 2017
TOYOTA SUV MADE FOR EACH OTHER
Well that was a fail
[oooooooo he broke it🤣
Get a Subaru
Bacon eos yus!!!!!!!
Dang, you're not that good at driving
