Yeah, almost as if rehabilitation over punishment has merit. German prison is similar. I think its the better system. Yes, you don't get the "satisfaction" of making prisoners suffer in inhumane conditions for their crimes, but at least society is safer, because people are less likely to commit a crime again afterwards. Im fine with that. Treating prisoners with respect is fine. Its good. Theyre still people. And sometimes people go to prison for not so evil stuff. Nope, they've been registering cases of people commiting crimes just to spend time in prison with a better life they would have put of there. It's a problem. Also, the criminal cause suffering to other people and he'll be treated as a king? No way.
Norway is rehabilitation though. Norways prision systems actually work most of the time unlike other places. Criminals get therapy there and have to face the actual issues that led to their criminal behavior. They are still treated as humans.
Something people seem to forget in Norway is that there standard of living is just better. There prison sounds chill to us but life outside is just as good if not better, so there's really no incentive to get arrested on purpose.
It's really not that. As someone from Norway that have talked with several people that went to prison, sitting in prison still isn't great even when all those things are supplied. Turns out robbing someone of their freedom to leave is a good enough punishment for most things. And quality of life have always been highly subjective and relative to both culture and the nature of where you live. In Norway certain things like the quality of your home is prioritized over most other things. As for the standard of living, that depends upon who and what time period you're looking at. Let's just say that currently the lower working class is growing, and so is a new financial class that's sandwiched between destitute and the working class. The new class (which is considerable enough in size to make a class) feature people that get temporary positions for part of the year, and have to quarrel with social security for 5-8 months just to pay the bills. Typically saving or owning much of anything is impossible in this class.

Yea that's not true, people still know you're a criminal and good luck finding work when getting released when the employer can see that you've been a prison inmate.
Is that all Norwegian prisons, or just the ones who deal with redeemable prisoners? Rapists and murderers really shouldn’t be put in what are basically hotels
isnt part of the reason why prisons need to be harsh and scary so that nobody wants to end up in them? i feel like providing this much for criminals it will enable them more to commit crimes because they dont get punished for it, they get rewarded. i know norway is a rich country and all but this is a waste of taxpayers money.

Thanks for the advice, I’m now gonna steal in Norway so if I get caught I’ll have the time of my life. No taxes, no annoying employees, no tv subscriptions everybody forgets about.
Alternatively, you could just move to Norway. This is prison because quality of life is a lot higher there than in many other countries. What they get in prison IS less than they'd have as a free citizen.
Ethnic Norwegians: The majority of Norway's population is ethnic Norwegian, making up 83.2% of the population. Non-Norwegian European: 8.3% of the population is non-Norwegian European. Other: 8.5% of the population is other. African descent: Less than 1% of the population is of African descent. Just don’t be black and you probably won’t even want to commit a crime anyway.
Btw that is an exaggeration about Norwegian prisons, i worked in one 4 years ago and there’s no flatscreen, it’s a standard cheap tv from 2010 ish. They all wear uniforms and some of them only get 3 hours outside of their prison cell.
I think it’s also important to understand that even in American the way a prison is really depends on your crime/behavior when it comes to how you are treated and where you’re going. It’s a statistic that’s probably been erased from the Internet, but under Obama one out of three people locked up were illegally entered Immigrants locked up for something else completely and Obama stopped collecting data on those he called the “dreamers” (those who broke the law to enter the US under 18). Yes America has many people in jail/prison, but so many of them are not born and raised in Americans, but are traffickers that bring in millions of people and an estimated half million weapons, far more drugs and some are not even in jail for trafficking but other violent or dangerous crimes. Obama deported so many people, yet the actual history is so hidden in order to be politically manipulative and completely confuse people of all the things actually going on and why. Don’t forget in 2020 many prisons in America let the criminals OUT due to Covid. Huh? That’s just a tiny scratch at the surface. Our southern border has more “migrant worker children” going to those who just claim they are relatives then you can imagine, I don’t claim to understand the past four years of corruption, but I also won’t turn a blind eye if it gets exposed for what all its been looking like.
Japan is a human rights abuser. Most convictions are due to coerced confessions. Japanese prisons and treatment of prisoners is an abusive hell. Their country is basically a totalitarian society. Fuck Japan.
I get what you’re saying but every prison makes you work, even in America. and most of the time, inmates get paid for their work in both the US and Japan. It varies by prison. It’s not much, could be as low as like 40 cents an hour and some prisons will make you work 12 hour days. You’re there to take responsibility for your actions, not vacation. Haha
@ I’m not exaggerating when I say 99% of trials end with a prosecution. It’s one thing to make legitimately guilty prisoners work, It’s another thing altogether to design a system that aims for a guilty verdict.
In Mexico, you get beat up, accused of something you didn’t do, crapy meal, overcrowded cells that fits 4 inmates, yet you are the ninth person in it. , intimated visit by your spouse, visit by your family and friends about 1 day a week. Same things as in the States, just incarcerated being innocent. 😢

The maximum sentence is 21 years, but it can be lenghtened if they believe you haven't changed over the time. Not to mention the fact that people who do really bad things get the usual jail system.
The reason Norwegian prisons treat their inmates very well is because they try to teach the criminals how to do good so when they get released they will be more likely to not do crimes. Fun fact: did you know that less Norwegian prisoners have done crimes after being released compared to America.
Fun fact : did you know that justice isn't about rehabilitation but to avenge the victims so that they don't seek justice themselves? I doubt you'd want your mother's rapist to be in a norwegian cell.

Rehabilitation is good for society and is cheaper in the long run. In the US, criminals are treated like shit and come out of prison with little to no chance to integrate back into society and fall back on committing more crimes, increasing both the total damage each person causes, and the cost of keeping prisoners locked up for a longer time at more occasions. Even though every day cost less, those days stack up. 200$/day for a total of 50 years is going to cost more than 400$/day for 10 years. The numbers are made up for simplicity, but you get the point. We also get the effect that a rehabilitated person is less likely to re-offend, so the amount of victims per criminal decreases. A rehabilitated person will instead participate in society and generate resources to society instead of being a drain on it. Meaning that population is not an issue. You are losing more by having a shitty prison system, than a good one. A larger population doesn't change that.

It would be abused to no end in the US.

17:00 End Work and Free Time after work starts

I get what you’re saying but every prison makes you work, even in America. and most of the time, inmates get paid for their work in both the US and Japan. It varies by prison. The amount of people isn't an issue. Less people = less people to generate resources. When you have a large population, you have the resources to do amazing things due to the insane potential productivity that comes with it.
