Life on an ALBANIAN FARM

  • I spent a couple days up in the mountains on a self-sustaining farm. All the food that we ate was made, produced, or grown on that property - fruit, vegetables, dairy, honey, etc. The fact that the farm is self-sustaining is made even more interesting when you hear stories about the communist era in Albania. Fruit that was grown on the property was not allowed to be consumed, but rather was collected by the government and sold throughout the cities and villages in the surrounding area. This makes it all the more amazing that everything they eat is from their own property.

    Growing up on a farm in America, I must say I was so surprised when I saw first hand during my recent visit to Albania, how primitive their farming practices are in contrast to American farming. But I was also struck by the resourcefulness of the Albanian farmer/herder in how they are able to make such a small plot so productive solely through the labor of man and animal. It was like stepping back in time & I was in awe.

      @@JamesLeithart and it's part of the hospitality culture to not let a guest leave the house empty handed. We give sweets to little kids or pocket money, or fruits/cookings to grown ups. Especially the grandmothers never let kids go empty handed. Another case when we give, is when we return something borrowed to the owner. Example: if i were to send back a plate (that was previously given to me for use)to the owner, i would put something in it as well.

      thank YOU for watching!...and so quickly after I uploaded. i was continuously blown away every time i realized it. i mean, almost every ingredient of everything we ate came straight from the farm. even the wheat that was ground to produce the flour for the bread... (i could go on and on ha)

    • @halfphild
      @halfphild 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh man, I'm glad you brought that up because when I (naturally) started to doubt what you were saying about that, the first thought was, wait, how'd they get the flour?! LOL I'm such a lazy American. Thanks for making these videos, man. I know they take time and I know (if you're like any of us) that you go through your own version of 'this video isn't worth making, editing, publishing... it's a waste of people's time...' It's not. Thanks. Keep it up. Whenever you can. (I'll watch as soon as you upload if possible because otherwise they go hiding into never youtube land and I forgot you even uploaded lol.) I liked learning about the Flag btw. That was cool too. Cheers!

      there's a chance that there's small ingredients in things that don't come from the farm...but i'm not even sure how much those are used 🤔(thinking like baking soda, sugar, etc). Also, in response to the videos not feeling worth it...the response to my videos has increased dramatically since I started making this style of educational travel video - especially in Albania. I'm not sure if it's #nosmallcreator finding their way here or Albanians watching their own country, but it has become much easier to put in the time.

      This is a “farm” but really every village in Albania has property and they all have gardens and some have animals they keep. Mostly chickens but this is a larger one. I’m 30 and when I would go to the village at my Grandma’s house back then they had countless fruit trees, gardens, pomegranates (fav), plums, figs (God I miss fresh figs), chickens, and early on a cow as well. Every summer the city kids would go to the village and stay with grandparents or relatives and in my time. Those are our fondest memories. Before we learned greed, before we cared about brands before instagram and facebook, we spend time outside and with our loved ones. My family lived on a lake so they’d take me to swim. I loved it. I used to go to the neighbors and play with everyone. A lot of them were related to me. In my family’s region, they grow Olives and tobacco so I’d sit and sew tobacco leaves with the other kids. Ah, I remember fondly. In the harvest season we’d chew raw barley and it would turn into a gummy texture. We’d roast corn not sweet corn. Soo good. In the fall, we’d make the olives for winter and the kids would smash the olives. We’d crush the grapes with our feet to make Raki (moonshine). Just the best memories. These days things have changed in Albania as well. Due to the economic travesty people were forced to emigrate to support their families. I write this from the U.S. the villages stand pretty bare these days with mostly older people who don’t want to leave. They no longer have big families to support and help with big farms or gardens. It’s become more dismal and sad for me to think about it especially because I have so little family left in Albania. We all have left and it’s just so sad that it had to be this way for us. I go back frequently and I am so happy to take my daughter there for the first time. She will learn Albanian and where mami and babi were born and raised. If you want to go, go. Everyone should know their roots, it helps us understand more and be more compassionate towards one another.
