Nice reels indeed, back in the day, here on the UK East Anglian coast where distance casting is a ''must'', we used oil rather than grease on the plain bearing ABUs because when looking for every yard, grease created too much drag. Thanks Dennis , take care and stay safe
I agree. I only oil bearings. I rarely use grease on them as the grease attracts debris and as you note, slows the performance - Thanks for the note - Dennis
Abu 7000 such great reels. Really bulletproof in terms of performance. Cast great. Don’t backlash. Great drag. Hold plenty of line. People sometimes forget a level wind is really nice at night and when it’s cold and you’re wearing gloves.
Dennis, this is exagctly the Ambassador that I once had and sold. I put a chrome spool on it that I got from Abu. I t must be one of the most beautiful reels I’ve ever owned. It came with two handles. I am so happy to see this reel again. Oh, I got my Penn 450ss today but I haven’t started on it yet. Everything works but it is sluggish. I’m guessing it is grease choked. I used my Ambassador for surf fishing and it was great for that until I couldn’t see well enough to keep bad things from happening. That’s when I sold my conventional reels and went entirely to spinning reels. Great video of a fantastic fishing reel! - Chris
@@2ndChanceTacklethe Penn 450ss rebuild was a resounding success! I love this little reel. A few years ago I was satisfied to stop getting any more Penn vintage reels after I got all the black/gold Z reels. I am so glad I decided to get the next series. They are a joy to work on and even better for fishing. Next week I’ll be taking the 850ss you gave me next week to the beach for surf fishing. - Chris
Wow that was packed full...I would like to just add my technique for cleaning that metal mechanism plate without disassembling it for those that may find that too much a task,. Fill up about halfway a small plastic butter container or wide mouth jar with Kingsford charcoal lighter fluid or paint thinner and place it inside for a few minutes, take a larger artist paint brush like a camel hairs brush and gently wipe the grease off while its in the solvent, you can take it out every few min also and gently wipe it down with a paper towel, careful not to knock a spring off, and place it back in until its clean enough for your liking, then dry , grease and assemble. I find this methods works better than just blasting away with 1/2 a can of WD40, you can use the paint thinner / lighter fluid over and over again, if you keep it in a container with a screw on lid ,whereas the WD40 gets expensive to use in that way unless you buy the jugs of WD40 to use as the bath.
Thanks for the cleaning idea. I guess a word of caution. Do that type of cleaning outside and make sure there are no open flames around as both are highly flammable - Dennis
Bushings wear can be checked by putting the gear stud in the bush and checking for side to side play. It is it tight and no or limited side play you are good. If there is a lot of slop, they need to be replaced. Bearings as replacements are fine, but not necessary - Bushings don't rust or seize up like bearings, so that is their advantage - Dennis
I have an abu ambassador 7000c I took it apart to service it and I have a magic washer that’s appeared. It’s a plastic washer. If you have any ideas let me know. I’ve been through the whole schematic.
I hate when that happens! Unfortunately, I don't know where it would go. If you send me a picture of the washer to my email 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com that may help me identify it - Thanks for asking - Dennis
The obvious answer is where the reel makes noise or is sluggish. I recommend that you service the reels at least once a year and that you change the oils and greases at that time - Dennis
One of America’s favorite Reels . Appreciate you taking the time to find a part !

One of Abu’s finest. My Favorite Hatteras heaver reel. I’m always looking for a back up to my back up. Nice clean up here, Dennis. 👍🏻👍🏻
I totally agree - Thanks for the note - Dennis

How do you determine if the bushings in each side case are warn? Can they be replaced or should bearings be used?

Abu are fantastic reels......unless made in china. when i service my reels i strip them to the bare bones and clean the parts in my ultrasonic cleaner
Well done. If you keep them serviced they will keep you fishing - Thanks for the note - Dennis
How do you know when to grease and when to oil?
The obvious answer is where the reel makes noise or is sluggish. I recommend that you service the reels at least once a year and that you change the oils and greases at that time - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle I ment when serving which parts get oil or grease
The parts that touch one another get grease - gears, slides, levers, etc. Bearings get oil.
I wonder it cost for service from Ca on 7000 ,6000, 3600 Abu
