I am Korean and I want to also add that there are also so many different clans called bonkwan (본관) within the last names that connect the common origin of the family. For example, for Kim there’s Gimhae Kim, Andong Kim, Ulsan Kim, etc. Each clan has a different progenitor so all the Kims are actually not closely related. What’s interesting is that each clan has a naming system rule for the Nth generation for sons. Not many people follow this these days but it’s a tradition that they kept up until my father’s generation (my dad is now in his 50s). All of my dad’s brothers and male cousins have the same character in their name because they are all part of the same generation in the bonkwan. It would be different for another clan with the same last name as ours though. Edit: Also, there are clans with origins outside of Korea as well. Not completely knowledgeable in this area but for example, a progenitor who migrated from China to Korea thousands of years ago takes on a Korean surname, then starts his own clan as he settles down in Korea. The descendants of this clan would have Chinese ancestry.
On behalf of all Korean teenagers who were desperate to find a resourceful explanation channel that can help us introduce parts of our culture in English, I genuinely appreciate your hard work for explaining the topic with great interest and surprisingly accurate pieces of information including some facts that I did not know before. Please forgive me if my sentence sounded weird 😁
I want to add that "Rhee" and "Yi" all fall under "Lee" as they are all the same pronunciation in korean that were just translated horribly and differently when koreans immigrated to other countries
lol Koreans and Vietnamese have Sinitic names lol. The reason why 李 was first romanization as Lee in Chinese was because there is an actual European name ‘Lee’ that sounds the same. In modern time it is just ‘Li’. Obviously ‘Rhee’ ‘Lee’ were the same name of different romanization. Many prefer ‘Lee’ because it is the same name 李 Li after all.
Actually surnames of kim ,lee ,park came from china. We just borrowed their characters and called them 김, 이 (리),박 in korean way. According to romanization rule in Korea, 김 should be Gim ,not Kim , 박 should be Bak ,but Kim was taken into consideration as there is Kim in first name in usa.

I started watching the series and OMG I came for Tae (He wasn’t a main character but I also loved his scenes) but stayed for the actors and the story. It was very addicting and I loved it! There were also some VERYYY heart wrenching moments. The end started to get really tense with the whole royal family drama but it was a pretty happy ending. I feel like they could’ve made one more episode that truly closes it off, but that’s fine. Oh, and be prepared if you ever watch it. Ananya Mudigonda because in korea there are many origins of kim, lee, park. For example your last name is Kim but if you want to know their origin they tell you (andong kim, kyungju kim, kimhae kim, gwangsan kim..... and more....)
Yes thank you I was so confused I thought almost everyone was related like sister, brother, auntie etc.. but I knew that was not possible I’m dumb but not that dumb 😂
When Koreans meet, often during their first meeting, they ask each other, "Which Kim are you?" etc. because they wish to know which lineage or clan they come from. If two people with the same surname fall in love, they also worry that they might come from the same root clan, thereby making them relatives.
I guess the only ones who would care of clans are those who actually of noble descent. Who have bore the name for generations back from the time of old kings.
@@freslieslieson9877 Nah, everyone has clans. The video doesn’t speak about them, which is quite odd. There isn’t just one Kim, Lee and Park. No, they’re a mix of surnames which just happen to sound the same. Plus, the old class system is pretty much gone by this point, since the Korean society was entirely uprooted with modern events. Nobody knows whether their ancestors were nobles or commoners, merchants or slaves. Literally nobody.
Short ans: "Kim" was the last name of a royalty, and other people made their last name Kim too(but it had a diff hanjja, like a diff meaning if ykno what I mean)and made a family, so yeah.
South korea’s old mac donald be like: _Old kim donald had a farm eieio_ _And on the farm he had a kim eieio_ _And a kim kim here_ _And a kim kim there_ _Here a kim_ _There a kim_ _Everywhere a kim kim_ _Old kim donald had a farm eieiooo_
I’m Korean and let me tell you that there’s repeating last names but there are many types, which we divide them with the origin of the last name. Because ancient Koreans the heraldry and family roots were really important. For example: kimhae kim, gwangsan kim, gyungju kim, andong kim.... etc. So even there are south koreans with north korean kim or viceversa.
Are you referring to the clans? I've been reading some articles about it, even if they have the same last name, they can be identified thru their clans (like the examples you mentioned)
Also slaves didn't have surnames in the past and the abolition of slavery led to lot of people registering the name Kim or Park which were regarded has higher 'status.' So a lot of them aren't real surnames (I.E able to trace the genealogy from their names)
Kenolee Diyathma ?? Did someone ask?? My point is there are repeating last names but there are many clans. ex) hamyang park, milyang park, suncheon park, muan park, etc.
That's annoying lolololol But if you go by roots the actual prounciation of the surname IS Lee. It's only that it sort of morphed into dropping the consonant in modern times. The top 4 names all have Romanization problems and it's annoying, Kim can also be Gim, depending on how you see it. For Park, you gotta take out the r(Also it can be Bak). Choi simply got the vowel wrong. It's more like Choe(Like pronouncing Cho-eh quickly, making it one vowel.) I'm Choi. It makes my name sound weird when called by an English speaker.
I'm sim -> 沈 In the old days, there used to be many different regions, but now there is only one. So Koreans with 'sim' are eventually from the same family.
> "This is unlike any other countries in the world." Actually I think we have a similar situation in Vietnam when there are a few family names that cover more than half of the population and there are about 10 to 20 family names that are very commonly seen and could cover the whole class room of 50 students. Anyway, this is a very fun video to watch. Thanks!
Same, if it's a Maori name (NZ), Cuz ('cu' pronounced like cuff) is kind of a running joke or serious if you like a new acquaintance with a relative's name
It's the same here in my country. I almost bang my cousin 😂☠ we are from two different end of the island so I was like how would we be related. Boom here comes grandma with the old ass history book talking abt far cousins
While it's often the case that Filipinos who share the same last name might be related, there is also a large chance that they might just be coincidence. Filipino natives initially had no last name. It was only in the mid-1800s when the Governor General Narciso Claveria enforced last names via the Catalogo Alfabetico de Apellidos that people were given their Spanish last names. This means, however, that families from different towns could theoretically be given the same last name even though they're not related at all. Some towns even have a predominance of last names starting with a particular letter because that's all the list that the parish got. This fact dismisses the notion that many Filipinos have with regard to supposedly having some European ancestry. Their last name was a matter of convenience for the Spanish for taxation purposes.
In Korea, there is something called "bon-gwan", which is a system used to distinguish clans that share the same name but aren't related. For example, the Gyeongju Kim and the Gimhae Kim are considered different clans, even though they happen to share the same family name Kim. A Korean clan is a group of people that share the same paternal ancestor. It's important to know which clan you come from so (when you marry someone that shares the same last name) you aren't marrying someone from the same clan as yours. In Korea, When adopting a child, the adoptive father and the adoptive child must share the same combination of the bon-gwan and the family name (Kim, Park) "Gimhae Kim", for example, is just one branch of "Gim" clan. "Gwangsan Kim" is another branch of "Gim" clan. Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il, and Kim Jong-un belong to the "Jeonju Kim" clan. The same goes for "Gwon" who has the branches, "Andong Gwon" & "Yecheon Gwon" Clans. "Chungju Park" is also another clan branch under "Park". PSY is from "Miryang Park" Clan. So when you ask a Korean with a last name "Kim", "Are you related to Kim Jong-Un?", instead ask them, "Do you come from the "Jeonju Kim" clan, like Kim Jong-Un?" I'm "Gimhae Kim", what Gim clan are you from?
Wow this is interesting aaaannnd kinda complicated 🤔🤔 But, After reading this I started to think that thanks we have different cast names and sub casts with different names where everyone can recognise everyone easily and while marrying you just need to know your root it isn't cast but proper root of your family so easy
I was literally telling my friend about how ever Kpop idol has “Kim” in their name Kim Jisoo Kim Taehyung Kim NAmJoOn Jennie Kim Kim Kim Kim Kim Kim..... And then this video popped up in my recommendations. Wow.

There are also 'clan names' in Korea. It's more like how family name system worked back in time of Rome, just like 'Julius Caesar'. For example, Lee has a dozen different clan names such as Jeonju-Lee, Gwangju-Lee, Deoksu-Lee or Yeonan-Lee etc and they all have different ancestors. They aren't all the same Lee or Kim.

@@semiprotita yes
@Tokk2 Every Asian country is like that
Also slaves didn't have surnames in the past and the abolition of slavery led to lot of people registering the name Kim or Park which were regarded has higher 'status.' So a lot of them aren't real surnames (I.E able to trace the genealogy from their names)
Kenolee Diyathma ?? Did someone ask?? My point is there are repeating last names but there are many clans. ex) hamyang park, milyang park, suncheon park, muan park, etc.

Use Roman letters for English users to read Korean names they said.
Lee: Ee
That's annoying lolololol But if you go by roots the actual prounciation of the surname IS Lee. It's only that it sort of morphed into dropping the consonant in modern times.
The top 4 names all have Romanization problems and it's annoying,
Kim can also be Gim, depending on how you see it.
For Park, you gotta take out the r(Also it can be Bak).

Actually I think we have a similar situation in Vietnam when there are a few family names that cover more than half of the population and there are about 10 to 20 family names that are very commonly seen and could cover the whole class room of 50 students. Anyway, this is a very fun video to watch. Thanks!

In Korea, When adopting a child, the adoptive father and the adoptive child must share the same combination of the bon-gwan and the family name (Kim, Park)
"Gimhae Kim", for example, is just one branch of "Gim" clan.
So when you ask a Korean with a last name "Kim", "Are you related to Kim Jong-Un?", instead ask them, "Do you come from the "Jeonju Kim" clan, like Kim Jong-Un?"
I'm "Gimhae Kim", what Gim clan are you from?
Wooow so interesting
Wow this is interesting aaaannnd kinda complicated 🤔🤔
But, After reading this I started to think that thanks we have different cast names and sub casts with different names where everyone can recognise everyone easily and while marrying you just need to know your root it isn't cast but proper root of your family so easy
are they still know from which branch family they're from?
