It looks like what they use for guitars with a locking trem/vibrato system, like a Floyd rose. If you have not seen them before, if you search Floyd rose you will see. The strings are clamped down like that at the nut and there are little tuners down at the bridge. It allows you to go wild with the whammy bar and still stay in tune. So you can do big dive bombs and stuff. Handy for genres like metal. A bit of a faff about though if you're just playing regular stuff.

It was going straight into my little Orange Crush amp with a little reverb added.

It's was the amp's built in reverb. Those Orange amps are pretty cool :)
