  • Two teenagers are arrested in connection with the assault and robbery of an elderly woman, but it soon becomes clear that someone else committed the attack (guest star Denis O'Hare).
From Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 01, Episode 16 "The Third Guy": Two local hoods (guest stars Eugene Byrd and Rick Gonzalez) are implicated in the murder and rape of an elderly woman, though they claim they only broke in to rob her.
Law & Order (1990 -): Follows a crime (usually a murder), usually adapted from current headlines, from two separate vantage points, the police investigation and the prosecution in court.

Mental hospitals aren’t actually like that. I know someone who works in one and I’ve visited someone in there before. The vast majority of the people act normal for the most part, it’s the outbursts you have to worry about. Of course there are some who have weird tics and repeat things over and over again, but a lot of them do get slightly better with meds. Not fully, but they at least give the outward appearance of being normal most of the time.

We have a Mental institution in my city. I was able to visit the hospital because of my work. In the hospital it had different stage areas. What you saw there is what no one in public usually sees, except maybe a family member, but it exists. There are some individuals so far gone they have to be completely sedated to practically a zombie state. Mind you the number of people you saw is keen to a city of 2.6 million. My city holds 4 million and counting. We have 2 institutions that cater to the unbalanced individuals. Most hospitals have psych wards but it is usually a temporary time frame until they get a better diagnosis to find a future "residence". If you walk down a major metropolitan just look on the streets. It will give you an idea of what to expect in these permanent "hospices"

It’s definitely weird seeing a show that’s still on from almost a completely different time

Interesting that Denis O'Hare played a character both on Law and Order and another one in SVU and both of them were mentally challenged.

I definitely want Stabler back on SVU than Organized Crime.

Sorry I was using my speech to text program on my tablet and did not realise how bad it had messed it up.I was trying to say was I have Asperger's and learning difficulties .I'm legally on legal disability income in my home country of Canada. I am not sure how I feel about what this guy did. I would never do anything like what the guy did but But I'm pretty sure I'm more high-functioning than him. Assuming he's not faking. I do talk to my mom a lot and she has said that I would not do well in prison or any kind of police custody. And I'm pretty sure in my small town Canada I never encountered anyone faking having disability or faking not having it.

I’m assuming it’s on the severe side

Kinda hard not to agree with Cragen here. Then again, didn't it show that he was actually faking his mental illness in this episode?

I don't think the question here was about faking mental illness or not. Its about what do we do with a scenario like this, what would have been more humane as a punishment for this person who is borderline. Would going to prison have been better for him or is this the place he needs to be? I saw this as the sad reality of this episode and that there are probably a lot more criminals in this situation.
