Your comment about mosasaurs being considered by the media as 'crocodiles with flippers' made me chuckle - I study metriorhynchids, which are Jurassic crocodylomorphs which evolved to live in the ocean - there are indeed crocodylomorphs with flipperlike limbs and a tail fluke! Not related to mosasaurs but it's interesting that 'crocodiles with flippers' did exist at one point!

The countershading on the Tylosaurus works pretty well and I especially love the stripes on the mouth. It's also amazing seeing these pterosaurs take off, fly and swim in animation, which greatly displays how we should accurately see them move.

It seems like just yesterday Old Buck came out and now we're near the end. The Dinosauria series is probably my favorite paleoart...ever if I'm honest. The carnivores aren't monsters, the herbivores aren't docile puppy dogs, even at it's most fantastical the animals don't feel too far removed from being animals. I haven't felt this much wonder with prehistory since watching Walking With as a kid.
Out of curiosity would you ever revisit these shorts and make more after the initial 5 run?

    • @blackraptorex2469
      @blackraptorex2469 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

This seriously gave me Fantasia vibes when watching the shorts, the music, animation, no dialogue, and the sound effects. And I love the fact dinosaurs (and the creatures of sea and sky) aren’t portrayed as monsters like in most media but animals that all they do is hunting, raising young, and just surviving.

I really, really appreciate your commitment to accurate and interesting paleoart. I'm full of mixed feelings toward nearly all pop culture depictions of prehistoric animals, and toward many "accurate" educational materials as well. Dinosaurs and their contemporaries weren't hyper-aggressive constantly roaring dragons, they were real animals. But they also weren't solid grey lizard-birds who looked like skeletons with skin draped over them. They played, they slept a lot, and they probably had some wild features and behaviors that nobody's even guessed at yet. I can't say it enough: they were real animals.
So I really love art like this series - art that grounds these gorgeous reptiles as believable animals, but doesn't lose that weird and wild spark that animals always have. Major props, David. I'm glad you love dinosaurs.

I'm interested to know the thought process behind the wing design. I've seen a lot of debate regarding the shape of the wingtip, strength of the cross-sectional aerofoil, the width of the wing membrane front to back, and whether the membrane would have formed a smooth curve (as in the animated models), or folded like loose skin (as in the sculpture). It would be really interesting to hear what guided that decision making process.
Also, Dinosauria has rekindled my hope for the future of prehistoric media, what with the all-time greats either being long dead or poorly handled, and your work in general was probably one of the key inspirations for me to make my own work darker, without falling to edginess. I really appreciate how well your work (especially post Merry Madness) managed to walk that line.
And in case no one else says it, the Cretoxyrhina are adorable.

Thank you for also going in-depth about the sound. I've been wondering how you did that.

Also shout-out on the great mosasaur, my only comment on accuracy is something even really great paleoart does as well, which is that the teeth are too visible and big. In life they'd probably be like living monitor lizards where their teeth are very deeply embedded in the gums.

Theses are all absolutely incredible. I love how you tell such a story in such short time. Thank you for bringing your talent to this app. Theses are more professional than most film and entertainment on the market. These make my days better. Thank you! God bless!

I'm pretty sure I've left this in the comments before but I'm going to do it again just in case: I love watching your making of segments! You said several times how sea and sky was very time-consuming and at times frustrating for you, I know me and many others appreciate it very much all the time, attention to detail and craftsmanship you put into this wonderful piece of art!

Follow your bliss and do what brings you the most joy after this Dinosauria series, I've loved everything you've done. That being said, I hope your bliss carries you back to prehistoric subject matter, because these are an absolute JOY to watch.

This isnt jealousy this awe. You being 25 and the life you have and the skills and talents you have are spectacular and incredible. You are really something. I'm 25 and I have yet to feel like I have any goal, skills, talents or desires. Just living. But that's okay. I'm just really impressed with you

I have enjoyed this video probably the most out of all of the dinosaur series because the animation left me with a few questions on why something happens the way it did, also thanks for getting me interested in Dinos 🦖 🦕

I love how he goes through this, even though there was no need to show us the video. He could haave dropped a banger animation, but he went ougt of his way to show us the effort and love he puts into the project. Thanks, David, and keep up the good work.

Pterosaurs, especially those from pteranodontidae, are my favorite prehistoric creatures, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see someone make a film like this which rightfully depicts these creatures as the majestic, inspirational, and weird creatures they are. So thank you very much.
