Pantera was an American heavy metal band from Arlington, Texas. The group was formed in 1981 by the Abbott brothers - drummer Vinnie Paul and guitarist Dimebag Darrell - along with lead vocalist Terry Glaze. Bassist Rex Brown joined the band the following year, replacing Tommy D. Bradford, who was the unofficial original. Having started as a glam metal band, Pantera released four albums during the 1980s. Looking for a new and heavier sound, Pantera replaced Glaze with Phil Anselmo in late 1986 and released Power Metal in 1988. With its fifth album, 1990's Cowboys from Hell, Pantera introduced the groove metal genre, while its 1992 follow-up Vulgar Display of Power exhibited an even heavier sound. Far Beyond Driven (1994) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. In addition to their contribution to the groove metal genre, Pantera is credited (along with Sepultura and Machine Head) for being part of the second wave of thrash metal scene in the early-to-mid 1990s.

Stuff nightmares were made of but such beauty and art copying you guys (PANTERA) right down to the pranks and jokes n stuff in the rehersal room after rehearsals and just gig larfs and funnies.!!! Back in 93 when i was in a PANTERA tribute band we slogged our arses off trying to get things spot on including using piezo tweeters wired into my cabs...it was scary but i would go back to them days in a heartbeat and do it all over again...there will never ever be another band like PANTERA nor an era like that..💖💖💖💖👌👍🤘🤘🤘🤘

@@benparsons4979 yep. Dime had a blues-based style with some Texas boogie thrown in. He once called "Tush" by ZZ Top as one of his favorite songs. You might not hear Pantera and immediately think of ZZ, but there are subtle Billy Gibbons-esque tricks that Dime used.

Pantera was my first show. God i miss real groove metal. no band is like pantera.
1990? Was my second show. Exodus opened, then Suicidal Tendencies. Waiting while Pantera set up, I was standing by one of the bars and Mike Muir stepped up to get a drink. I was 14, starstruck. He looked over and I said "Hi." MM: "Hello." Me: "That was killer." MM: "Thanks." Me (to self) beelining for the pit: "you fu(k!n3 IDIOT."
Nothing could have prepared me for what would happen that night at the Ector County Coliseum. First concert in my life, and Pantera at that! Don't know how I made it out of there uninjured but, still one of the most intense things I've ever experienced.
@@stevenwilliams1805 you may have been injured but the adrenaline, the intensity of those early Pantera pits was insane. Injuries like that, you find out decades later when they're the 1st place arthritis settles in.

Pantera took metal to a new level of grove and power. I think they surpassed even the big 4. I never seen so many people mosh pitting ever at their concerts. Dimebag was a badass. I loved the way he came out acting like the guitar was a weapon.

The mosh pit at Pantera shows were amazing! I haven't found anything even close to that since then. Of course I'm in my 40s now so that might have something to do with it... but still, Pantera shows are timeless.

Pantera is credited for keeping metal alive when all looked hopeless. You had the whole grunge thing going on, but you also had bands like Bush, RHCP and those college bar scene bands that were taking a huge chunk of the music world. Then there was Dime, Vinnie, Rex and Phil who kept grinding out one stellar track after another.

I liked them all!!! Soundgarden, Tool, RHCP, Pantera. I didn't like Bush or other post grunge bands... Nor Nu metal. For me personally, Pantera was the last GREAT metal band.

Yeah, man. Despite Eddie having trouble working with people -- especially lead singers -- there are tons of stories that highlight that he's a really sweet, compassionate guy. The Dimebag story is the pinnacle of that. And what's cool is you can hear EVH's influence in Dime's playing. Awesome.
I have a good friend that's a cop; real tough guy, you're unlikely to ever see him cry. But he's a huge Pantera fan and I remember the day Dime was killed, I assumed that he already knew and said "sucks about Dime". He didn't know; I told him & fucked up his whole day. He was fighting back tears in his police uniform and had to step away from the conversation.

I never knew that story. I've heard lots of fucked-up stuff and a few good ones, and I knew that I have to reserve judgment, because not many people have been through what he has. But that's a class act; and I wish EVH would connect with his old bass player and long time friend Mike Anthony.
I found that Rick’s epic air drums are the only thing I live for.

I did not know the Van Halen story. That got me all teary...
It's heartbreaking and it would have blown Dimes (Darryl) mind if he so how could have known that Eddie would make that amazing gesture. I remembering reading about this immediately after the funeral and it I remember correctly. The brothers were able to meet Eddie a several times and Dime really wanted to buy the Bumblebee guitar...the original guitar! But Ed was too attached to it and did not want to sell it, but he did offer to make him a copy. Well Ed never got around to it, because as we know Eddie was facing some serious demons in 2004. However, when Darryl passed away, Eddie pulled himself together and made the very generous offer by giving Dimebag the actual original guitar, and he placed it into Darrell Abbott's coffin himself. I met Pantera backstage in 1994, and they were very down to earth people, very cool people. When I asked Dime who his biggest influences are he said "absolutely Eddie Van Halen! " RIP Dime!
I knew about Eddie giving a guitar to dime post mortem but never knew it was his original bumblebee.
Seen in an interview with Eddie that he had Vinnie place it in dimes coffin because he wanted his last memory of dime being of them hanging out together
He even left the original strings on
@@LeeHibbs Yeah, I just read the article on VanHalen news desk. Apparently Ed gave the guitar to Dimes girlfriend: Rita Haney to place in the coffin.
Ed was about to do it himself but wanted his last memory of Daryl to be the one when he last saw Darryl and he had a big smile on his face, hanging out with Eddie.
Per the article, Eddie stated that Darryl was a complete original and when it came to gifting him the black and yellow stripped bumblebee guitar, that Darryl had always dreamed of owning, Ed wanted him to have the original.
Such a magnificent display of respect. No doubt the feeling was mutual. Later Ed stated that Darryl left him a voicemail 4 days before his death thanking him for giving the world the most amazing music, and for inspiring him to play.

I absolutely love that Pantera often had the balls to just leave the just the bass going under the solos without any rhythm guitar support. Rex is a great player and just really walked those sections. It gave them such a great feel.

I was hoping that we’d get Rex’s isolated bass track during the solo, seeing that Pantera often kept a true four-piece sound on their tracks without rhythm guitar overdubs. Rex is the glue that keeps the song together while Dime shreds.
One thing I absolutely love about that is, despite having never been so privileged to experience it, they could’ve played a show and had it sound like the recording without backing tracks. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate what many artist do, but I want to see them play what they recorded. I want live to be equal or better than recorded(and that doesn’t necessarily mean the mix, because venues can be difficult).
Rex is so underrated its not even funny.. How the fuck he's managed to exist as overlooked and underrated as he has been is just mind blowing
@@joelmacdonald6994 I saw them 5 times starting with the Cowboys From Hell tour in a small venue that held maybe 200 people. They were always spot on to the record back then. After years of touring Phil's vocals started to get pretty rough but those early tours were amazing.

Just before recording Rust in Peace, Dave Mustaine actually asked Dime to join Megadeth. And he accepted.
But the catch was that he would only join if Vinnie would too. Megadeth actually needed a drummer too, but Dave had just hired Nick Menza for the job, so the deal fell flat.
I can't imagine Megadeth with Ellefson, Mustaine and the Abbots, but I bet it would've been awesome.

Love “Vulgar display of power”, such an energetic, driving, pumping, fun album! I’m normally a prog and jazz-fusion guy, but never embarrassed to say I love this album and the late Abbott brothers in particular!

Can’t imagine that half that band is gone. Solos by Dime were a huge cut above anything happening at the time. You can tell he drew from so many musical influences to shred a solo with that much musicality going on.

Pantera’s tone was like from another planet when they hit the scene.
Dimebag Darrell was one of those rare guitarists who actually preferred solid-state amps over tubes. Apparently he couldn't get that buzz-saw tone of any tube amps he'd tried.

They worked hard and long for it and Vinnie Paul was instrumental in tweaking his and Dime‘s sound - they released four independent albums between 1981 and 88, only the last of which showed the direction in which they were headed (mainly because of Phil‘s more aggressive vocals. But even „Cowboys From Hell“ still sounds like a transition from the 80s into the 90s. By the time „Vulgar“ came out, they had flipped the sound switch completely and everybody’s jaws must have dropped, when they heard that album for the first time. Scott Ian describes it pretty well in that VH-1 episode of „Behind the Music“: „How did they go from here to (t)here!?“

Dime's solo is so crisp and clean in its execution. He just made it sound so effortless. He also had a really unique sound and style.

Dimebag said his use of Bends comes from his upbringing in Texas and the use of Bends in older Texan western and blues music. He said by using techniques like bending he was keeping it "texas style" even while playing metal.

I didn't realize how blessed l was when l used to live in Ft.Worth back in the late 80's, l think l was 21 then. But l just was driving around looking for a bar and stumbled upon Joe's Garage, Pantera on the old sign it read. Im Like "Hell yeah"!!!. Got so drunk and fell backstage with so many ppl back there and no one helped me up except here comes the band and it was Vinnie Paul. "You alright man?" I nodded my head and gave 👍 and a incoherent drunken thanks came out. Great guys.

Listening to Dime solo is like listening to water flow. He loved playing guitar more than just about anything. Miss him.
As a drummer for over 30 years, I've never had any turn to me and say "hey, play the caveman fill!"
That solo is so clean and precise, and has so much swing/groove. Dime is a true legend. I honestly think he's UNDERRATED as a solo composer.
Underrated? I don't think so. One of his solos is on Rolling Stone's top greatest solos of all time.

Did work experience in a record store as a high school kid, they weren’t allowed to pay me, but allowed me to choose an album for free - chose the new release of Vulgar after hearing the first 2seconds of it. Loved it ever since. What quality musicians! Great album.

Rex's bass part in Dime's solo really drives the solo forward. Rex is one of the best doing that.
Dime truly was one of the greats. He busted his ass building his chops, instead of building his ability to cover up mistakes in post, like, you know, MOST "metal" artists nowadays. His talent was one of a very raw and visceral nature. That's the key ingredient missing in many bands today. Dime was all heart. Too many musicians today are trying to emulate that character with technology, but it just doesn't work.
This made me all sad for Darrell again. RIP you legend. Also for Eddie, who was so generous towards Darrell. Two legends.

I mentioned Harvest because it's the most accesible from the album and it still is a great song with lots of things to analyze. But yes, Bleak too, as well as every song from Blackwater Park.

Phil had the most amazing scream/growl voice....you can understand every word. Darryl is a guitar god, vinny is a master drummer (very underrated , in my opinion ) and rex is an amazing bassist! I saw them live once (i was 16) and it was SO AMAZING! the energy was off the charts.
Thank you. Just been discovering Rick Beato and vids like these. All this analysis was great by Beato, but he could easily have taken another 20 minutes to not just break it down but actually say WHY it was great. Not enough of that. And one of those points is Phil's singing. For all of Anselmo's "faults" (or whatever you want to say), it takes something special to do the scream/growl thing AND still be understandable. The vocal delievry was so powerful.
What else makes this song great is just that it's an anthem to everyone who is or imagines themselves to be a badass and wants to brush away the pests around them. Almost any teenage boy/young man loves to have that kind of clout. I mean, this song is great for so many reasons and that's why it still gets air time 30 years later.

I agree with alot that is said here especially gojira and death (as ppl have asked for before) but understand those wouldnt get nearly as many views as metallica, pantera, aic, tool, etc.
I like how Rick bean around through all the generations n he has an appreciation for for all “rock” /“metal” he’s not just some arrogant “boomer” who hates anything that isn’t from the 70’s he sees and appreciates the evolution n progression of guitar playing through the decades n genres cause he has a true love for it. Saw Pantera in Dallas in...'96? White Zombie opened. Most brutal pit I ever experienced! Left with a giant boot-print across my face!
Dave H ... My sister was married to Darrell`s cousin and I got to meet him and hang out with him in 1984. He gave me a guitar lesson on an old Fender acoustic guitar of a Def Leppard song. I moved to Dallas in 1985 to work and got to see Pantera play in clubs. The first time I saw them play he jumped on top of a table in front of the stage and kicked beers off of it on the opening song, including an entire pitcher of beer. I never forgot the name Pantera after that. He lit a roman candle off my sister`s stove once and "didn`t make it outside in time" so I got to see some of his indoor fireworks antics. Burned holes in the couch, the curtains and the carpet. My sister was pissed!

With all due respect to Dimebag (and that's a LOT), he wouldn't have had the sound he did without EVH to build off of. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Music is progressive, and Dimebag created a unique sound that only he had, but a lot of the roots were in EVH's playing. There's a reason Dime wanted a copy of EVH's guitar.

Pantera is and always will be the best metal group that ever was and what a tragedy it is without Vinnie and Dime here with us.. There music and impression they made on this planet will live on until the end of days.

Oh dude... my favourite part of his solo is where he "Echo's " from the 2nd fret to the fourteenth on the B string and then goes into his next pattern. I remember reading a Guitar World interview with him and he seemed like the most humblest of people. Stories of him giving his guitars away to people who were down on their luck. What a dude... what a band. He said in the same interview that he had a guitar in every room of his house including the bathroom. Legend.

Thanks for posting, I hung out after hours w/ the brothers many times. One time we went to their Mom's house in Arlington and did shots of Crown. Dime went into the garage to practice which he had sound proofed, and Vinnie took us back to his room where he had a mixing board that had an early version of The great Southern trend Kill, it was an honor, but as a guitarist at the time I regret not hanging w/ Dime. Your vid brought back memories! THNX!!

@@nowimhigh Sorry I was there CFH had been out for years and Vinnie told me they were living there, he had a video security system installed for his Mom. There's a video here that has Vin on Head Bangers Ball giving a tour of his Mom's house B4 he had his house built 2 or 3 albums after CFH.
What is crazy to me is that the solo has so much gain and distortion and that usually makes every mistake very audible. Dimebag played so clean you hear absolutely no hidden screw ups at all.
One thing I love about Vulgar Display of Power is that on several songs, including Walk, the rhythm guitar drops out during the solo and Rex and Vinnie carry the song.
Every pantera live show just blows my mind how tight, flawless and energetic their playing was from start to finish

Love this song. I remember the first time I heard Pantera, it was this album that I got in the mail (thanks Columbia House monthly suggestion!). When I got to Regular People it was literally like nothing I had ever heard before and I was hooked.

The drums are so lyrical and powerful. You can hear the guitars playing in your head even with the soloed drums.

Im not usually typically one for solos, as usually feel they are contrite, corny, and sometimes just fillers but I LOVED all of Dimebag’s solos. They literally melted my face, every single time. They just felt organic and effortless but also incredibly executed and poignant. They added to another layer to the song. Masterful technique and creativity. Pantera was one of a kind and so was Dimebag. One of my all-time favorite guitarist.

How can’t you mention Rexs playing during the guitar solo? It compliments the solo tastefully it would not work without it.
I was really waiting for hearing drums and bass solo through that part. The fact that they didn't overdub any rhythm guitars there and it grooves like hell makes it an even greater part.
I was about to say the same. Rex is kicking ass here (well, pretty much everywhere else too ;) ), it's such a shame he didn't get mentioned. The bass line here is soooo jazz-driven.

What an unbelievable gesture by Ed...He was extremely "out of it" at the time and I guarantee he totally forgot about making him the guitar so when Ed was up against it as far as giving Dimebag the Guitar he just said "Screw it" Take the Original"...

I remember when Darrell was killed that one of my best friends and I, who had actually been working on a Pantera cover song, got an "in memoriam" spot added to our school announcements via the fellowship of Christian athletes (fca) club. We had a good few dozen people to wear pantera shirts every day for the following week and it was really cool to see how many kids and teachers at our high school were fans. Thanks for the awesome song breakdown
