🎮 "You're In Control"
As a South African rugby fan and the rivalry between the Springboks and the All Blacks. Dan Carter will always be remembered as the ultimate fly half and all round gentleman.
I love the rivalry and respect from Springboks and All Blacks supporters. Such an incredible competitive love and respect for each other. I love that
And as a Kiwi I'd have to say that Morné Steyn was also bloody good!
🇳🇿🤝🇿🇦🏉
I’m a 30 year old kiwi bro and I play 10 and goal kick! All time my 2 favourite kickers were always DC and Percy Montgomery, I’ll never forget how clean he kicked!! Best rivalry in all of sport not just rugby!! SA v NZ
I SECOND THAT SENTIMENT! He was magnificent!
DC is overrated
Carter was a true all round complete player. What isn't shown in highlights is his ability to control a match and be the ring General.
Love your work bro
You said it perfectly boss! That Generalship that you mentioned is what I heard makes him legendary! I'm going to watch more in-depth highlights that showcase his ability
This. I remember being at Eden Park 2011 rwc pool game v France. Ball on a string isn't strong enough. Telepathic connection with ball whilst bossing both teams around the park... And he hardly moved when touching the ball. Pass kick pass kick.
Highlight videos don't even begin to describe the talent of this man. Once I was at Loftus, Saders were playing the Bulls. Literally, and I do mean literally, every time Dan didn't pass a try resulted. Normally the Bulls fans leave when the Bulls get hammered - nobody moved.
I agree Pierre! That's so awesome you saw him play at Loftus! That's an amazing memory
As a South African I agree he is one of the greatest of all time. Winning was always sweeter with him in the NZ squad.
I love that Andrew! The rivalry and respect between SA and NZ is incredible to me
60m Kick. The Line was 10m inside his own half from the middle of the field. When I grew up, Dan Carter was one of 2 fly halves you wanted playing Rugby 08 😂😂. The other was Percy Montgomery
Thanks for letting me know that Jean! hahah Rugby 08 was an absolute classic game!! We need a good rugby video game. The last few have been rough
Yeah those 2 were on another level
Imagine Carter at 10 and Montgomery at 15 in the same team!! That's what I did on Rugby 08 lol, but I updated the rosters to 2024, none of the fly-halves come near those guys.
Stephen Larkham was better than both. Way better runner.
I used Wilkinson at 10 , he had the biggest boot.
Could slot drop goals from 40 out every time.
The most complete player I have ever seen, he could run, pass, and kick, but his game control was frankly amazing. If Spencer and Wilkinson were cloned and some weird mixed up test tube Carter would have been the product, if you know you know.
I love everything you said Karl! He's absolutely incredible from everything I've seen
Wasn't a great runner. Ok but nothing to write home about. His highlights are meh.
Man I miss watching this guy play. He was the Legolas of rugby
DC is absolutely incredible! That's cool you got to watch him live
Great stuff. DC was probably the best ever in his position and played a game against the Lions where he did everything and could be described as the perfect 10. First five or first five-eighth is very much as southern hemisphere description for fly-half or stand-off, as we tend to call it in the northern hemisphere. It is because it is half way between a half and three quarters: The Kiwis tend to name the backline as half back (scrum half); first five or first five-eighth (fly-half); second five or second five-eighth (inside centre); three quarter (outside centre); wings and then full-back. I am an old man now (well 56) and after playing rugby all my life in the UK until I went to work in Hong Kong in 1994, the first game I played out there as a flanker the captain told me to just hit the first five. I didn't have a bloody clue what he was talking about!
Thanks so much for letting me know about the first five-eighth. That makes a lot of sense now. I have never seen that term used until now
hahaha I would've been like you in Hong Kong if I heard that being used 🤣 That's hilarious!
I appreciate you Harry!
Definitely not the perfect 10. Had a very average running game.
He is a true grand master of our game. It's not quite clear to see his genius just from these clips as he was not the most dynamic player, unlike say B. Barrett but he had this ability to keep defenders guessing with what I call his 'half step'. He would stand in such a way that by offsetting his position by just half a meter to one side or another he could create just enough doubt as to whether he was going to pass, kick, take the line etc. He was also a surgeon with the boot, missing very few kicks with something like a 98% success rate. He was also hugely successful at calling clutch plays and generally dictating the pace and style of the game and would switch it up during those crucial moments to swing momentum to the All Blacks favour. He was also very calm and collected and had a solidifying effect on the kiwis. As you can gather from a lot of the comments we Boks hold him in very high regard and was a true beacon of the game, unlike Richie McCaw who did not play the game in its intended spirit even though he was an extremely good player and is showered with accolades, but we'll talk about him when you do his highlights. Dan Carter you beauty!!!
Massive love Chris and thanks so much for your incredible analysis as always. You said it perfectly and I can tell DC is held in high regard by everyone in rugby. I love to see that!
I'll definitely do a Richie McCaw video as well and we'll go deeper into the history of his play. I'm looking forward to it!
Dan Carter is rightfully the GOAT fly half . I say that as an Englishman when we have our own treasured Jonny Wilkinson. I think it’d be great for you to check out Jonny Wilkinson because for me and many others he was the greatest defensive number 10 that has ever been . He was a great place kicker too but he annihilated much bigger opponents in the tackle . Too brave almost .There is a video on TH-cam of his big hits
I'm definitely making a video of Johnny Wilikinson! He's been on my radar for awhile now and I'll make sure to get that video knocked out. I'm excited to see how legendary he was 🙌🏽
As a Kiwi I say Daniel Carter is overrated
@@JaemanEdwards so you reckon JW was better ? 😁☝️
@@MrAnamchara No
@@QSNggjonny was best tackling flyalf of all time. Probably the best kicking off both feet whether for posts or for touch and he had equal distance with left and right foot and could hit drop goals equally well with both feet. Nobody in the game practiced harder or longer. He was a perfectionist and became obsessed after a while. Also the fittest guy in every England team he played in. Nobody came close to his fitness scores. He outworked everybody. Only fault, if u could call it a fault, he wasn't the fastest runner. A lot of fly halves were faster runners than him. He arguably played his best rugby when he left the restrictive style of play he was expected to play for England and moved to France for the last 3 or 4 years of his career and played club rugby for Toulon where he is still considered an adopted son. The French usually don't like the English but he was the 1 exception. They loved him in the South of France. He was made captain and under his leadership they won multiple European championships. He was also a fluent French speaker and last year the club inducted him into their rugby hall of fame, only 1 of 2 foreign players to get this award, the other being former springbok Joe Van Niekerk who after finishing his rugby in France moved to the jungles of Costa Rica and became Jungle Joe.
In New Zealand & Australia the 10 is called 1st 5, 12 is 2nd 5 & 13 is called the centre .
Thanks for letting me know that Jimmy! I appreciate you 🙌🏽 That makes sense now
Not quite, that's what they're called in NZ.
In Australia it's '#10 = Five-eight, #12 =inside centre, #13= outside centre.'
The term Five eight is actually the more original, older term. Fly half is slightly newer but still really old and comes out of Wales.
Five eight refers to the distance the player is from the ruck.
It's also where terms like half back and full back come from. I.e. the fly half is slightly further back than the half back, so five eights of the way back, while the full back is all the way back lol.
Getting into really obscure rugby history here.
It's also where the term quarter back and full back come from in NFL btw, holdouts from old rugby terminology.
Man the goat carter, there was a moment many thought they going to rename new zeeland to Dan Carter.
What a legend.
And first five eight is been used in new zeeland.
He's a GOAT for real! I still have to get used to the term five-eight! That was the first time I've ever heard it
100% percent of DC's career is highlights!
The man was the perfect player, arguably the greatest to ever play.
I was fortunate enough to interview him when he was playing for Racing 92, really nice guy too.
I love that Thomas! DC is an absolute legend. That's so cool you got to interview him too. If you have that video of your interview please send it my way. I'd love to watch it
@@QSNgg "unfortunately" that was for print, no video!
DC🏴-what can you say, the stats say it all. The perfect 10. Not the biggest, fastest or strongest but a clinical point-scoring machine! Like the video is named, he just "made it look easy" with his fancy-pants style, his flair. He was invited to the Patriots to have a "look around"! He went, but he said (so he said), thanks but no thanks, he didn't like the shape of grid iron ball!!
PS His father put up rugby goal posts on the lawn at their family home in small town rural Canterbury, NZ when Dan was 8 years old (to save the windows of the house!). They are still there and its like the "Gracelands" of NZ Rugby, with tourists pulling up taking photos.
You said it perfectly LJ! That's cool to hear about his look around at the Patriots. I never heard that story before.
Also, love the fact of Gracelands where he learned kicking too! That's iconic! ❤️
@@QSNgg Jonah Lomu too was offered eye-watering dollars from the Dallas Cowboys. He turned it down saying "Ahh, it's only money"! Preferring the black jersey instead. - Love your work @QSNgg 🖤💛
@@QSNgg yeah they invited Dan, he said in an interview, he tried to kick it but he couldn't and that he didn't like the shape of the ball. South African fly-half for the Springboks and the Stormers warm up with 1 of those tho and he kicks it sublimely. Which is very ironic because Dan Carter is a far superior kicker to Libbok from the tee!! Strange.
@@QSNgg Hey our ex-Hurricane and legendary All Black Ma'a Nonu is in the States playing for San Diego Legion in the MLR right now. I saw him on a "KoKo" Australian rugby podcast/chanel. He said the League was created and import international players to give the Americans experience. There are half a dozen or so NZers over there that didnt make the Super Rugby cut. Ma'a is a good dude, tough as but humble and also a hard case, has a good witty sense of humor. Don't know if you are far from San Diego or any of the places they travel to? Just sayin' 🥰🙃
Dan is the “10” GOAT🙌🏿💯
But the power kicking boat goes to Frans Styn. +60m drop goal kick
You said it perfectly!! I still have to check out Frans Steyn. He's on my list 🙌🏽
I'm really enjoying your enthusiasm learning the game I love. I played professionally and if you ever want to keep in touch I'd enjoy helping you with some of your questions on the technical details you ask about. Keep up the good work
Massive love Paul! I really appreciate you. Thanks so much for offering to help me learn too, I would love that! Anything I can do to understand the game at a deeper level is greatly welcomed and appreciated 🙌🏽
I’ve just come from your Cheslin Kolbe video- and I don’t mean to take away from this video of Dan. But I highly recommend to see if you can find the docu-series Chasing The Sun (there are 2 seasons - season 1 from the 2019 World Cup and then season 2 is the 2023 World Cup )- it’s about the South African Springbok team and why winning is so much more than winning for our country. Great content you put down- love the passion in your content and thorough analysis.
Thanks so much Genna! I really appreciate you! 🙌🏽 I absolutely loved Chasing the Sun 1 and 2. I'm releasing my reviews of every episode. Here is the first one I did on season 1 episode 1: th-cam.com/video/QYaK-y4Eqlk/w-d-xo.html
The special term for it going through his legs it nutmeg
Thanks for letting me know the correct term
1st 5 in rugby is basically the QB mixed with a kicker. They control the direction the game is going. For this reason they dont usually have highlight reels filled with crazy hits or runs.
Carter was the total package player. Could do everything and for the most part made it look easy.
Compare Carters highlights to Beauden Barrett, Stephen Larkham, Richie Mounga, or Damien Mckenzie. Quite an eye opener.
That makes perfect sense Dane. Thanks for letting me know that. You're 100% right he's the total package player. I can see he thinks miles ahead when he plays
I'll have to do that for sure
Finally Dan Carter!! As a South African though i love Morné Steyn, Dan Carter are the absolute best 🇳🇿💯!!
Not the best runners in the world
@@JaemanEdwards elaborate?!
@@thegreytone Just compare the twos highlights to Stephen Larkham, Richie Mounga, Damien Mckenzie, or Beauden Barrett, and you'll see exactly what Im talkin about.
@@JaemanEdwards Dan Carter and Morné Steyn were sharpshooters, slotting kicks over in the heat of the moment from 60m +!! That's what I "admire" , their ability to kick masterfully. You're mentioning fly-halves, who are good at running rugby and I love it as well. Our Handré Pollard are like Morné and a little bit of Carter, Percy Montgomery were a lil better than Carter. Our younger fly-halves are like New Zealand's fly-halves, playing running rugby, Pollard keeps to the pragmatic style, but still efficient.
I'll have to check out Morné Steyn too! DC is awesome!
Great reaction as always champ! The Lions tour in NZ back in 2005 was probably his best performance. Funny story, he's been kicking goals off his left his whole career. His last goal kick as an All Black, the bro signs off his career by kicking with his right 😅
Solid reaction my guy! 🙌🏽
Thanks so much Tia! I always appreciate you and love connecting w/ you boss! That's so dope he kicked w/ his right to end it all 🤣 LEGENDARY!
Hi again. Yeah, the 5/8 is not something we use here in South Africa. We say flyhalf. But it's the same thing, really.
Thanks again for your channel. Really great!
Again, go look at Christian Cullen. His short career was awesome!
Thanks so much for letting me know that John. I appreciate you for letting me know. I like using flyhalf better. Easier to understand
I have a Christian Cullen video coming out very soon 🙌🏽
DC is undoubtedly one of the best players of all time. Notice how many of those clips are against wales too. He loved playing us, ha haa. P.S: Jeff that massive kick against south africa was probably at ellis park in SA which is at altitude so kickers can generally kick longer at that stadium. You still have to do it though! PPS: Through the legs is called a 'nutmeg.'
I agree with you Monty. DC is incredible!
Thanks for letting me know about that kick as well. So spectacular to watch. hahah "nutmeg" crack me up! Thanks for the name on that
Dan Carter is every South African's favourite All Black
I can see why! He's awesome!
Cause he's white
Pleaee react to frans steyn next hes the king of long range kicking
I'll 100% check out Frans Steyn!
Number 10 for Crusaders / All Blacks, Carter and the number 7 is Richie, that duo = Rugby Domination
The man Richie! I'm going to check him out!

For me, he was not the most exciting, but he controlled the games and opened opportunities for his teamates. This is why he was one of the best
That's what I've been reading! That field Generalship is what separates the goods from the greats!
It's called a Ground grubber in that day
Thanks for letting me know that Leon. That's awesome!
Dan was one of the best. With his kicking, running and in any aspect of the game. He is my idle
I love that Kaleb! Dan is the man
Thanks mate. love the vids
Dan Carter was a legend in Rugby! What a player! RED Kits is a country called WALES! Not France!
DC is a legend for sure!! Good call on Wales. I messed that up
The team in the red kit he called france,it was france he was correct that was the 2015 world cup.
You didnt mess up,you were correct it was france in the red kit they played in that kit at the 2015 world cup.
The Kiwis are solid right across the park and then you have the exceptional players that do stuff that no-one can predict or defend against. It need only happen once or twice in a game but that becomes the difference between winning and losing. Lets leave the consistently great forward packs aside. Unlike most other playing nations the Kiwis keep nurturing and finding great half backs and five-eights. Pivotal positions for teams going forward, maintaining possession and most importantly ''letting the ball sing'' ie letting the outside backs loose. None better than Dan Carter. What a tragedy for the Kiwis that today they're dilemma is who to pick in those positions? Too many to choose from. Luxury.
You said it absolutely brilliantly! I love the detailed breakdown you have. NZ definitely has the luxury of talent. That's a good problem to have
Personal top 5 flyhalfves.
1) Dan Carter
2) Jonny Sexton
3) Handré Pollard
4) Jonny Wilkinson
5) Stephen Larkham
I love that Royce! I'll have to check out Stephen Larkham
The team in red is Wales
Thanks for letting me know that Jeremy ! I appreciate you boss!
You need to react to Grant Williams.
South African scrumhalf with crazy speed.
Yeah I'll make a Grant Williams video for sure!
Vision is the word to describe Dan.
You said it perfectly!
The GOATs Richie, DC, LOMU. IMO
Those are some GOATs for real!
Try out the legend that is Shane Williams played some lovely rugby in his day,one of the smaller wingers but what a pair feet
100% Andrew! I have a Shane Williams video coming out very soon 🙌🏽
You should react to cristian cullen next. The paekakariki express. He's the GOAT fullback

8:46 its a 60m kick
That's a boot!
Exceptional athlete a good video
To watch the rugby foot races
Massive love Isaac! I appreciate you!
5/8 is a term used in Australia and New Zealand.
Thanks for letting me know that Geoff! I was wondering where that term came from. I appreciate you!
If you want to see a insanely talented long distance kicker check out Franscois Steyn
I'm 100% checking out Frans Steyn!
If it was on the 10 metre line then it would be a 90 metre kick
Thanks for letting me know that Oliver
IT'S CALLED THE COOKIE...
Thanks for letting me know that Nolan!

As a South African i HATED Dan Carter during his playing days.. obviously out of rival respect.. but his work.. Most TALENTED GOAT

Goat rugby Player, any position.
Not even the best first 5 out of New Zealand

Beauden Barrett is the GOAT. All the skills and then some.

Yeah especially his defensive up and unders from inside his own 22. The goat at keeping his team under pressure.

That was Loftus where he kicked that long pen it looked like ?
So a little bit of help given the altitude but still a biggie ( not Francois Steyn range but not far off )
8:24 - kick seems over 60 damn meters, WOW!!! So, glad he retired!!
That's a boot for sure!
@@QSNgg indeed!!!
Firstly friend my comment about RM is very far from hate but unfortunately today people aren't interested in engaging in constructive conversation, it's seems easier to just label and put people into groups. Please note I acknowledge that he was a great player but my point was that he is far from being in the same category of Dan Carter because of his playing philosophy. As I said let's leave it at that and get into it when his highlight vid comes up, then we can have a good debate on whether he too is a G.O.A.T.
I agree! It's great to have constructive conversation. That's what makes sports so much fun. We can have different views and respect each other in the process. I love your insight always Chris! I welcome great thought provoking conversations always.
