I had McClellan 1859 saddle bags I carry everything in needed for the horse and for myself I Carry all of the brushes and hoof pick on the left side and cleaning kit for my pistols and a few things for camping like a small cast iron fry pan and other items on the right side this was set up for one person and when I was changing from civil war to basic camping or trail riding I can carry everything I need even a sample first aid kit for me or my horse if he gets cuts
If a trooper had the chance to carry an extra curb chain, the saddle bag would be the ideal place to put it. I carried one for years and never needed it. However, it came in handy when a friend broke his in the field.
Though I don't actually smoke, I reckon if I did, perhaps a bit of tobacco/pipe tobacco and likely a smaller pipe. If not a small book, perhaps several letters from home, realizing all these might well be bedroll items. As always, thank you for a well-shot, well-researched video. Much appreciated!

I always carry a small awl, sinew and two leather sewing needles, with which I could field repair almost anything that broke
