  • The Lion Dance, a customary Chinese tradition that was once an almost banned sport, is today an indispensable part of Malaysia’s multicultural tapestry.
    In the course of its history in Malaysia, the Lion Dance has evolved from a show of inviting prosperity into a highly competitive extreme sport, of sorts.
    Not to mention, anyone can join in to learn this art form.

    lion dance was unbanned in 1982 after 513 riot in 1969. I joined a lion dance team under a chinese temple in my village in 1982 at Muar Utara (today is called Tangkak), long before another Muar lion dance team made its fame winning many champions.

    Just wondering what does the skin of the drum itself made of? Some told me it’s made out of pig skin. Would love to know from my chinese friends. Honestly curious.

    • @Samanthayeoqy
      @Samanthayeoqy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      in the past, its made out of pig cause its the only available material, cow skins are used to make more precious stuff like clothes or to insulate their homes. But now, its made out of cow skins/fake skin cause its much more economical.
      You might find some that is made out of pig skin but that is normally made custom and is more expensive than normal cow skin and is not as durable.

    • @NK_Khoo-Malaysian
      @NK_Khoo-Malaysian ปีที่แล้ว +8

      made by cow or buffalo skin. pig skin is no thick enough and durable to make such drum.

      @@Yaphett I learned lion dance in 1982, 101% confidence to inform anyone the drum is made of cow and buffalo skin.
      lion dance used to be associated with the chinese gangsters in 60s and earlier, it impacted negative impression on lion dance, this is one of the reasons the lion dance was banned from the public performance in 70s.
