  • Aquila and Priscilla are a Bible power couple who don't get a ton of screen time in the text, but obviously had a huge and lasting impact on the first era of Christianity.

    I've always been fond of Priscilla and Aquila because they were the subjects of a Sunday school lesson when I was a child, and around the same time the miniseries A.D. was on television, and they were supporting characters in it. I guess the link of Sunday school and a big TV event really impressed me, lol.

    I think it's Craig Keener who argues that the names being used together most likely signifies that they were equal leaders in the church! Which is a pretty interesting little side point! Great video!
    Found that reference:
    "Paul begins with Prisca and Aquila (16:3-5), his close coworkers in Corinth and Ephesus (1 Cor 16:19; Acts 18:1-2, 18, 26) who have now returned to Rome. It was unusual for a wife to be named first, as Prisca (a Latin name that had a more familiar form, Priscilla) usually is by Paul and Luke; this sequence signified either higher social status (as normally in antiquity)17 or higher status in the church (as possibly relevant in the churches).18 Paul calls them his “fellow workers,” a title that, along with diakonos (16:1), is among Paul’s most common designation for his colleagues in ministry (Rom 16:9, 16, 21; 2 Cor 8:23; Phil 2:25; 4:3; Col 4:11; 1 Thess 3:2; Phlm 1, 24)."
    Craig S. Keener, Romans, New Covenant Commentary Series (Eugene, OR: Cascade Books, 2009), 185.

    Priscilla is mentioned before Aquila in Romans 16:3, Acts 18:2&18, and 2nd Timothy 4:19.
    But it's the other way around in 1 Corinthians 16:19 and Acts 18:2.
    So it doesn't really matter.
    But it does matter that Priscilla is mentioned before her husband sometimes.
    Because wives were never mentioned before husbands in that day, UNLESS... unless the wives were taking the lead in the endeavor being talked about.
    Which means that SHE was at least equally active with her husband in the ministry.. if not taking the lead at times.
    Which is a can of worms.
    So let's go fishing.

      This is true. I agree that there is importance in the way the names are ordered each time. There are so many intricacies in the bible even with just "and" and "but" and the places words are used changes the entire context and meaning. Priscilla seems to have taught and disciplined as well. Which is empowering and GREAT news for women to read.

    Quick question. There's a lot of debate among Christians about husband and wife co-pastoring. Does it appear to anyone that this might have been the case with Priscilla and Aquila / Aquila and priscilla?

    • @saintygyal

      I’ve been wondering about this. Because this really takes a different view into account.

    • @firestarter105G
      @firestarter105G หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They were most definitely co-pastors. Read the texts. Some historical theologians say Priscilla wrote the book of Hebrews.
      This does not go well with the "J" name first day churches.

    • @Godsglory777
      @Godsglory777 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @saintygyal well, it does, and it doesn't. Even if Priscilla turned out to be a co pastor with her husband, it wouldn't change th3 fact that God still ordained man as head of His family and the local church. Of course, we know Christ is the head of the body, but according to 1 Tim. 2:12-13 men are supposed to be th3 leaders of the local church body. However, it would not be against proper church order for Priscilla to co-pastor with her husband. As long as He was the official head of the church.

    • @Godsglory777
      @Godsglory777 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @firestarter105G I have read the text. It isn't very evident within the text that she was a pastor. She was definitely a helper of some sort, though. When we consider the proper hierarchical structure set by the bible in the Garden of Eden and according to 1 Tim. 2:12-13 Most likely, she was Aquila's helper and not a full-time pastor. But again, the early church was in it's early stages, she may have talen on more than we could ever imagine, especially until the order of the church gmhad been established. Either way, she was a mighty woman of God, and I look forward to meeting her.
      Edit: about her being the author of the book of Hebrews. I see not credible evidence or biblical proof for such a claim. It appears by all accounts to be the apostle Paul.

    Now for the fringe theory -- and this one I don't agree with, but it might be helpful for context elsewhere. Occasionally you might see people (Rob Bell comes to mind) casually dropping the idea (sometimes as though it's settled {eyeroll}) that the writer of the Epistle to the Hebrews was a woman.
    I'm not sure of the full range of evidence in favor of this theory, but it comes through the concept that someone familiar with Paul's circle of friends, particularly Timothy, but who didn't consider himself an apostle (unlike Paul), wrote a tome designed around the idea that Christianity is superior to the Judaism of Philo of Alexandria (not mentioned by name but the topical list ticks off with his ideas pretty closely). One of the standard guesses is that this points to Apollos of Alexandria was the author. Matt and I both lean in this direction, btw. {g} But there isn't enough detail to be sure, and other standard guesses might work just as well (except for Timothy of course, since he's mentioned as a separate person.)
    Since there's not enough detail to really nail down among a wide range of possible Pauline-associate authors (Barnabas, Luke, John Mark the eventual first bishop of Alexandria is my own favorite pet theory, even though for practical purposes I lean toward Apollos), the concept can be floated that we do know of someone in Paul's circle who did instruct _some_ intellectual Jew from Alexandria, who might thus have been a Philonic Jewish philosopher: Aquila and "little Priska". (She's only called that, "Priscilla", in Acts by Luke. Paul always calls her Priska, or Prisca in Latinesque spelling later, without the extra affectionate diminutive suffix, though some later textual families do go with Priskilla.) And EpistHeb is written in a style where the author occasionally speaks in a personal plural ("pray concerning us" for example, though this isn't decisively indicative of multiple authors).
    So why would Priscilla be regarded as the (main?) author and not Aquila? Because in Paul's epistles he names Priska first two out of three times, before the husband "Akula" (which is how it's spelled in Greek, plus grammatic suffixes.) This is culturally unusual enough that it leads to the theory that Paul regarded Priscilla as the more important or authoritative of the two somehow, and so it's generally but not universally guessed among scholars (including Christian ones) that she was the main teacher of the two.
    Annnnnnd boom, now you've got the the final link to the theory that the Epistle to the Hebrews was written by someone not an apostle, who knew Timothy (Paul tells Timothy to greet Priska and Akula in the finale to 2 Tim), who knew how to teach Christian doctrine's superiority to devout Jews from Alexandria: the only people we know for sure who fit all those qualifications are Priska and Akula, and Paul seems to think Priska was the leader between them. Thus, she would be the guess as to either the direct author or the dictating author (with maybe Akula doing the actual writing) behind EpistHeb. This would also sorrrrrrt of explain why unlike the other epistles, this one has no internal identification of the (main?) author: in case there are problems with the Jewish-Christian audience being instructed by a woman, they might reasonably assume it was from Akula instead. (The exterior of the scroll would list the sender anyway; but we would have long since lost that.)
    There may be other evidence in favor of Priska, too, that I don't know about. It's a respectable theory, I think; but some of its proponents like to treat it as being more certain than it can be, in order to troll Christians who are uncomfortable with the idea of a woman writing part of the canon. That wouldn't be a problem in principal for me, but I still lean more toward Apollos himself (with a pet theory of John Mark).

    3:25 Interesting: the two names appear together six times in the NT. Three in Acts, and once each in Romans, 1 Corinthians, and 2 Timothy.
    The ordering of their names alternates back & forth evenly.
    Acts 18:2
    ...Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla...
    Acts 18:18
    and [Paul] sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila...
    Acts 18:26
    ...whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them...
    Rome16:3
    Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers...
    1 Cor 16:19
    Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord...
    2 Timothy 4:19
    Salute Prisca and Aquila...

    One of the things discussed among Christians with Pricilla is that she is working! Christians use the passages of her to say it’s ok for women to work, or go to work. Titus 2:1-5 teaches that women should be keepers at home. Although both accounts; Pricilla as a tent builder and wives should be keepers at home are both taken out of context, we would need to study further. Did Pricilla have a storefront? Doubtful, likely done out of their home. But we aren’t told. Is it possible for a woman to work and still be keepers at home? Possibly. Study it out! What does or is God’s desire for the role of the wife throughout scripture? What is God’s desire for the family? What did you find? Did you find that he desires for the wife to be away from the home “earning” her share? Not likely!
