I learnt the tactic a while ago, the hairs go up on the back on my neck if i see mushrooms spawned in when im on a low pop server, definitely means someone is camping near by, its a great tip people sometimes refuse to believe lol
If someone is bloodthirsty enough to track someone via mushrooms and fruit there's nothing the devs can do , these people are just wild animals that cannot be stopped
I believe I have done this, I was travelling blue trail to get to red trail, towards the end of blue trail I kept seeing so many stones and mushrooms, I literally hadn't seen one at all when I was travelling inwards from the coast, I instantly got put on edge as I came close to a small village that had a sniper inside of it somewhere, he saw me before I found him and started slinging shots at me, hit me once, I fell back and flanked for a bit until I saw him following red trail and use 1 of my 3 308 bullets to end him
What I expected tracking players in DayZ to be like : Looking carefully for footprints in dirt paths, noticing that by the footprint, it looks like military boots, so the guy must be armed, giving lots of information not only about where he went but also what to expect before even seeing him Reality : These mushrooms look kinda fresh, someone must be here.
the thing is many people throw on boots for the sake on throwing on boots no matter what they are "rocking" I myself sometimes before the sounds of shoes update happened would throw on mil boots to look bad ass when I didnt even have much equipment just a shitty makrov.
@@winterwagyu tbh blood trails for players wouldn't really work because the second someone starts leaking blood they bandage it. It's not even about blood loss, but noone wants to risk blood infection which can kill you no matter how strong or armored you are. Like I said after the update which made type of footwear matter such as sound I switched over sneakers because they or durable but more quiet then boots but I still kit out in guns and armor so just looking at a footprint on the ground and seeing if someone wears boots or not doesn’t mean they are kitted out because people will wear anything that will give them a advantage such as being more quiet
Another great topic by my favorite DayZ scientist! Many players talk about how spotting a mushroom means that there might somebody else around, but now we finally know how and why! Thanx a lot!
I think mushrooms should be technically correct and only spawn after it rains. That said it would be nice to be able to somehow track a player for a given amount of time (footprints, broken branches, etc). My 2 cents.
This wouldn’t solve the tracking issue though?? If they made it so that mushrooms only spawn when it rains, it just means you can still be tracked, only when it’s raining.

@Tommy yea man, but my guess to why everyone are aimlessly killing eachother is a result of the domino effect cuz when u finally get geared up and manage to travel from one end of the map to the other just to get killed u then spawn in ur next life with rage, hate and just focused on killing everyone as a form of revenge on innocent survivors, I wish I would stumble across more pacifists, but never have i ever experienced other than combat or betrayal in this game

I actually kinda like this tbh, Its kind of a version in game of tracking someone in real life, It punishes campers and it rewards player awarness also,
This game isn't warzone it's an actual game of camping and surviving. Yes there's combat but only if you choose to. If your looking for combat go to warzone and leave us players who just want to enjoy the game alone. It's players like you is the reason me and my wife started our own server to get rid of all the POS players like you players who are out for blood and adrenaline rush.
*Touches ear to ground *Picks up grass letting it fall to the wind... *A great battle was fought here many moons ago *spots mushrooms *It appears we have settlers in our lands once more.
This has been possible for years. I te amazing how many experienced Twitch players complain about never finding food yet if they just waited for a couple of minutes they’d have all the fruit and stones to make knives and survive for hours
A lot of players run and sprint and rush through the map for a quick kill. After months and years I now play 2-3 hours in the evenings together with my wife who luckily also likes DayZ, but we mostly walk or sneak through the woods as hunters (no running or sprinting) and every 100m we gather at a bush to not lose sight of each other. So we never have problems finding mushrooms and fruits because they have enough time to "grow" for us.
A friend and I were frolicking through the woods. He picked up a rotten mushroom and threw it at me. It started rolling down a hill. We followed the mushroom, trying to catch up to it as it sped along. Finally it came to a stop. When we looked up we realized the mushroom led us directly to someone's stash. I tend to toss rotten mushrooms around randomly now.
@@bethfletcher7272 No. Wolves only howl when actively hunting a player. Note...if you are running away from the wolves...you can't outrun them...and also they will attack you before stopping to attack...so you miss you chance for an easy dispatch.
Check inventory around trees if you find yourself in an area that you looted the house already and coming back on your tracks. Grab some fruit to go lol
I would love to see some other mechanics that indicate the approximation of a player. Like scared birds chirping and flying away sounds (or even animation of those ) and such once you enter their area
Idk if it's just me, but whenever I hear birds whistling in the forest while I'm travelling I usually wind up seeing a player shortly after. Might be meer coincidence.
@@XBlackwolf751X Vigor had that implemented at least at their exit points, so I was always wondeing if there is a correlation in dayz, but I could never find any. @WOBO, any thoughts?
@@XBlackwolf751X Actually the pleasant chirping sounds of birds in the forest are indicating you are in a fruit forest have triggered the spawn region of that fruit section in warm daylight hours. So I try to stop when I can and wait for the fruit to bear some goodies. However, when I hear the Crows, that is another sound all together! I have yet to figure out if that does or does not indicate another person or creature in the woods. Or if it's just another weather indicator. I still think (like you) that it is another person, but I have been on a zero pop server too often when the crows have sounded, so I am led to believe it might be a dangerous creature spawner nearby also. So I would love WOBO to do a test of this as the hooting of owls is another unknown I would like to unravel. They always seem to be right in my ears when I am trying to listen for people traffic. Anyway... I have hundreds of woodland hours as a solo hunter/player in North and NW Chenarus, so I hear these sound alot. The only one for certain is the obvious fruit tree birds.
@@XBlackwolf751X Hard to say, but do you check the server status afterwards when you hear these sounds? If that's a reasonable option for a test. Doing low pop servers I've played on still had the pleasant birds sounds near to me even on empty servers. But the owl and crow sounds vary, which is why I'm asking. As these two may be the indicators to other players or even animal predators nearby.
Environmental awareness is a thing that is awesome in a game like DayZ. The spawn amount definitely isn't realistic but it's the only way I see it working well without a lot of extra features and headaches for new players. A way to "properly" implement player tracking would be to look at real life. IRL animals and humans usually leave hints: usually prints, signs of activity (rubs, tool marks), feces/trash, and crushed underbrush. Bohemia could make it so mud spawns in random spots (ever present near water and increases in spawn rate and size with rain vs sun decreasing), and a player will leave a trail in the mud and have muddy boots/feet for 5 minutes after unless cleaned with a water bottle. Muddy boots/feet would leave a trail on hard surfaces like roads and house floors. I think prints should last 15 minutes(+ or - a few depending on balancing) and a freshness stat could be implemented. it would detail how old a print is by 4 levels of freshness. fresh (0-2 minutes old), recent (2-8), old (8-12), remnants (12-despawn). We already have toppled trees so that covers tool marks, but trash is one that can be done. Food like fruits and vege would have cores or trimmings left behind and canned goods or boxes leaving behind the cans and boxes. I believe the player should be able to pick these items up though, to help hide their trail as well as have uses. For instance cores could be used as fertilizer and cans as improvised containers. Crushed Under brush would work similarly to the muddy footprints, where brush is stomped down the width of a player in the 4 levels of freshness, fresh, recent, old, and remnants, but unlike muddy prints it's avoidable by slow movement. It should also make noise as it collapses. These additions would definitely steepen the learning curve and would probably turn some people off the game, but I'd like to see stuff like this.
Dragging a body, of a survivor or a zombie away into the bush. This would be a great idea. You can bury zombies/survivors - but why not have a drag mechanic.
Most people aren’t going to be looking for mushrooms 110+ meters away with a scope. They just aren’t. And without looking through a scope , any mushroom you encounter at close range you’ll have no way to distinguish wether you spawned it in or someone else.
My guess is, mushrooms weren't meant to be a means to track players, but were meant to be a constant source of food and water. However, as you have pointed out, that infinite food / water source is also basically a bullseye target for that player.
No, I’m pretty sure it was meant as a means to track other players. Just like how dropped items just sometimes fall through the ground and disappears into oblivion was intentional.
I really enjoy this. As a matter of fact i want the distance from the player in which mushrooms and fruit will spawn was increased, giving an even larger heads up to the player who is not camping. Its hard enough to find players in this game. And being slighted by a player who is basically afk is never fun.
If you increased the radius the tracker would find it harder to locate the person. From your perspective you believe it's a trail that leads you to the camper. For example if we take a scenario where radius Is increased to the size of electro. Ok sure now you know there is someone in electro cool but that's not a good amount of info. If the radius is smaller you'll be able to pinpoint the location of the camper better. If it's too small you'll never find the camper. So a decent balance is necessary
@@mikeyo116 you will never be able to find the camper by following the mushrooms. The camper will find you first. Making it the size of electro is obviously too large. But make it the size of say khelm. Now you know there is someone in khelm. Whereas before you probably wouldnt have seen the mushrooms in the first place at all at just a measly 100M
@@Skalla-nu2et ok good I said all that because I assumed you didn't understand so I overexplained. Also you point about not finding the camper you are absolutely incorrect I been using this technique for about a year now long before the majority of forums and and wobo posted about it. I have many funny stories regarding this. Anyway if you say the size of khelm is a good size then I agree with you because that's only 20m more than 100. If wobo is saying it's 100m radius and khelm is 120m then yeah that's not bad will work just fine.
For me aswell we used to think it was a 60m bubble but its larger than we thought also you guys arent accounting for the fact that players move around so its not just that 100m it will be far greater already because of the player moving around thus the bubble moving around
@@Skalla-nu2et you can definitely find people with the mushrooms, especially campers. I heard a shot from Polana that was far west (north west of Dambog) and I searched the woods for about thirty minutes. I found two guys camping in a bush about 45 seconds after I found some mushrooms piled on top of each other
found out about this about 3 days ago, when i found tons of mushrooms near my base. i was building it and just sticking around for some time and then i found like hundreds of mushrooms in surrounding forest
When I’m starving up north and can’t find or don’t wanna cook.. I always find a good spot and wait for mushrooms lol And if I see mushrooms in the distance if I’ve just ran into the area.. I stay on high alert. Especially if there’s many green ones. I’ve been alive for 19 weeks, solo on official.. thanks to mushrooms.
If items spawn in a 100m circular radius, It is impossible to correctly track any player that has been there in the last 5 minutes, As you do not know what direction in the circle they were travelling. So yes it is a good indicator that someone has been there but it is by no means a fool proof way of tracking someone unless you get lucky and select the right direction.
The more ways to track a player the better I say. I understand that having footprints everywhere or litter from drink cans n food wrappers strewn across the map would most likely cause performance issue on the server so is therefore not viable but if this is the best we can get then I’ll take it! Thanks for the insight, much appreciated.
yeah Ive noticed for awhile. Had a base at Rog Castle once and always noticed tons of mushrooms around it on the trails, that weren't on them prior, after going back to base and hanging out for a bit. Did testing with some buddies and found out about this. Used it as a bit of a security alarm to see if anyone was coming by. Worked fairly well.
"If there is a small stone at a spawn point, another small stone won't spawn there as there is only one place for a small stone to spawn at a small stone spawn point. However with mushrooms and fruit spawn points many mushrooms of fruit can spawn at one spawn instead unlike small stone spawn points." Damn.. That 10 second sentence really fuckd my brain
Seen a cluster of mushrooms on the Zero servers & I remember thinking it was the Admin’s creativity making a newbie spawn point a little more luxurious. Now I reflect back on it more skeptical
Hey Wobo glad your back! Hope the wedding went well an congratulations 🥳, for your next video could u please do a guide on the best clothing items in DayZ an what combo of backpacks an cloths are the ultimate load out!
very good info yet again, as a modder some of the things you said make sense and help narrow down future modded ideas and other things in the future. For example i use the Fruit/mushroom and stone mechanics for my Ore Boulders, knowing this know i have some ideas on how I can improve my mods use and reliance of this system. overall good info
I used to use zombie spawns on console for a way of knowing wether a player was in a town/village, I’d hide in the tree line above Novy Sobor and wait for people to enter the town by watching zombies spawn in as I’d know I was far enough to not trigger the zone
i think mushrooms and fruits spawning on your camp location is great since most people don't pay attention to it and because and if they do thats the risk of your camping all you have to do is listen for footsteps and have your back against a bush only having to look one or 2 sides to notice the mushroom sniffer
This effect would be fairly simple to mitigate or to make much more dramatic on a community server if you wanted to. In the types.xml you can adjust the lifetime of mushrooms, fruit, and small stones to be lower or higher once the player is out of range, adjust the spawn rates so that more or fewer appear on the server at once, and even adjust the locations where they can spawn.
5:10 The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't. In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation, the variation being the difference between where the missile is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the missile must also know where it was.
I'm glad I'm not going crazy. I thought it was maybe just working my nerves up, but every single time I try to convince myself it's just a coincidence I hear them before running into someone in the middle of nowhere I'm running into someone in the middle of nowhere soon after. It seems to happen particularly when I'm far away from any structures or roads, miles into the woods
I have the same issue, I feel the same way with the cicadas (weird bug noises). I remember hearing it and then as soon as he noise quit I got shot. It's like someone held their breathe then no bug sounds.
I dont make videos but a group of about 8 of my friends and I have tested all kinds of things related to the game with combined around 2000 days played
I have raided a barn base before,it was in good spot for spawning mushrooms, my game almost froze from loading in all the mushrooms these guys had spawned in, i believe they were sitting in that barn all night
You didn't test whether mushrooms spawn at jogging speed or less or can spawn at any speed even if the player is full sprint. My theory was always if you are moving slower than jogging speed they appear to spawn
Mike Yo, because it's an absolute. If you're sprinting through an area, you will generate the same number of items as when walking slow, because even walking slow you will be faster than the 15 minute fruit/rock/shroom timer
@@dh66 sorry I guess I worded it wrong I speak many languages so English is not my strong. But what Iam asking is basically how do we know it's absolute did I miss something in the video? It's trigger by player in any motion or only if the player is at some speed
@@mikeyo116 it's triggered by any number of players within 100m of the 🍄 rock, or fruit spawn point, then only possibly triggered again if any player is still in its 100m radius.
I remember being told about this in a Dayz Facebook group but I didn’t actually believe it until I filled a whole mountain bag with mushrooms lol. So there’s definitely some pros an cons. You can use this spawn system to get a ton of food and never starve again 😆 But I do agree that it’s a lil to hardcore to have your positions revealed because of a couple mushrooms and apples. I’m always paranoid someone’s gonna discover my base because of it. I’m in a spot that can’t be seen until your already on top of it but the mushrooms are a give away
I swear. Every time me and my buddy run across just 1 mushroom he freaks out and thinks there's a player nearby. I can now show him this video and hopefully he'll shut up. Thank you! lol
So basically what you're saying in the beginning of the video, things spawn and when those things spawn other things spawn with spawn points along with active spawns of spawning spawns. *Takes notes*
The charts on your website says that mushrooms will give you 120 energy and 106 hydration when baked. The video says that they will give you 300 energy and 500 hydration. I'm confused
Question: Don’t the named items spawn in front of the player, hence the player is spawning said items and thinks it’s someone that when by? Basically: You are creating a trail in front of you.
Playing 3 months as of this comment, I'm looking into counter tracking, so how to be less detectable, which brought me here. I'm playing fairly stealthy as a pacifist. I try to farm and I watched a real-life counter tracking video that has me interested in avoiding detection in DayZ. Having zero player and infected kills with longest survival time is my main jam. Thanks for making this. The spawn mechanics are still a bit esoteric to me. From my observations (2024 on official), the fastest I've seen fruit spawn is 12 min. Mushrooms might be faster. Once, I met a survivor and he was rather experienced, I took off all my gear and offered a trade, then we ran for a while together as he sought a BCD set. At one point, we were chilling in the woods as he gave me knowledge and a mushroom popped up in front of us. That was actually My best survival time is 50 hours. I was literally camping in an improvised shelter west of Staroye. I started just going AFK and trying to max out my survivor time until server restarts. I was AFK when I was killed.
To be honest it cank work with some imagination "oh looks like this mushroom was stepped on recently someone is around the area" but yeah sure it might be unrealistic but hey its a game and there still working things out always. Until DayZ can implement blood trails, and foot prints this is the best we can do to track players.
As a new player of dayz who struggles with food I learned something today. Stand still for 15 min in the forest, get all the goodies and have a feast later
yes you can as i have been doing it since 0.63. its stupidly easy to do especially when you have the map knowledge of an autistic savant and navigate entirely on intuition like i do with Chernarus
I logged out deep in the woods in the middle of nowhere. I get on the next day to continue to my journey, and I’m surrounded by mushrooms. Within 15 seconds of spawning in I’m getting shot at. I sprint into a bunch of large evergreens to hide all the while bullets are whizzing past me. I kept running through evergreens, then pulled out my shotgun. The dude ran right through them and I popped him. I ended up with an AKM with two 75 bullet drum mags.
Hi, one thing I have tested and I believe I can confidently say is that when you are building / doing certain actions more mushrooms will spawn. I’ve been building a base recently deep in some woods in Livonia and there is a very noticeable difference from when I build or just sit in my base.
edit: 5:36 it sounded like you almost started to laught around this time :-) I always though these proximity spawns are nasty wistleblowers... But now, thx to you, i have to be even more paranoid since you've made this "public secret" public :-)
Can you explain long distance head shots, And how much damage reduction does a helmet prevent at different distances, i shot a guy in the head at 300+ I seen the red mist off his head, The guy had a tactical helmet on and I never found him after that so I really do want to know what is the damage reduction over range for the helmets 🎉❤
I dont think this terrible, but the spawn rate seems a bit much. To me this is really reminiscent of the DayZ mod days where zombies wouldn't spawn at a location unless a player was within 200-250 meters of the spawn point. Back then it was really good for gauging how safe an area was before entering and I still use that same principle now sometimes
Man this vid would be a hell of a drinking game every time he says the word “spawn” lol!!! I think after 63 shots you’d be feeling pretty good in 7 minutes.
This has always been in the game and it should stay that way, as it is now there's basically no other way to actually track another player and i believe there should be more ways to do so. Another reason as so why this game has endless potential, yet it seems the devs have other plans...
I think they should alter it. You shouldn't be able to get an advantage through meta. In my view it's a bit like the dragging your gun to the floor thing to avoid making a sound. In both cases you have to have some very specific knowledge of the game mechanics to get an advantage over less experienced players.
@@dansweeney6360 Wait, so knowing how to make an IED isn't meta? vs knowing how to alter your traveling routes so you aren't spotted running down roadways? Both are meta you have to learn and it's specific knowledge advantage over new players. How is learning schroom spawn patterns different? Except it's a mechanic that is both good and bad to new and veteran players. The difference is, if you know the mechanic, you can easily avoid the over spawns. If not, then you will give yourself away by camping near deadwood and fruit trees. However, Devs probly won't be adding any other tracking to the game. So it's pointless to hope they will start placing footprints and allowing grass patterns now. We're lucky we have loud footsteps everywhere we go.
Do you think you can show this in action in game to demonstrate how useful it could be for hunting players? I feel like showing is the best way to really get across just how powerful it is.
As a player with stronger PvE skills, being able to track and hunt campers rather than trying to assault head on is my advantage. Every player has strengths and weaknesses, this allows me to engage my strengths to exploit others' weaknesses. Also, since campers are a cancer on the genre, I don't lose sleep over getting the jump on them by exploiting their poor/sloppy fieldcraft
As realistic DayZ tries to be, this mushroom thing has to be the most UNrealistic part of DayZ, ever! Spawn locations and when items spawn need to be as random as it would be in real life - otherwise players are just gonna be on edge every time they see a mushroom....which is ridiculous! Like KM said, they should spawn after it rains and rain should be, as in real life, more local to areas rather than the entire map. Now that would add a whole world of extra realism to an already epic game. Keep up the great work WOBO.
I like the mechanic. This is what I got from this. So if I'm walking and I see 10 shrooms there's a guy camping or alot of traffic. If I see a shroom 100m away there's a guy there. If I walk into a area and spawn 0 shrooms/fruit/stone then there is someone 10mins or less away from me right?
Is the 100m strictly horizontal? Or could a camper 100m off the ground in a tower have no items spawn around them? Also does this mean you can work out how long a camper has been there by the number of shrooms/fruit in a single spawn point, like 2 equals 30mins, 3 equals 45mins?
You could probably guestimate based on the number of mushrooms how long someone has been there, since 1/4 mushroom spawns are active at a time for 15 minutes at a time, a spawn would be active once an hour so it could spawn a second mushroom in the same spot, meaning a player has been there more than an hour but less than 2, so on and so forth.
This has to be peak DayZ . Using clouds to find your bearings ? Weak , using stars and moon to travel correctly ? Weak , using mushrooms to find other players that's the way to go .

If your looking for combat go to warzone and leave us players who just want to enjoy the game alone. @@deathdeathington 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I loved seeing mushrooms and saying to my friends "someone is close" and they just get all sorts of confused lol
Reminds me of the native tracker in those old Westerns.
@@deathdeathington exactly that's how I roleplayed using this information. Sometimes someone took a poop on them, though 🤷♂️
The winds of shroom whisper to you. Ha-oh. You have the strong medicine.

What birds lol
These additions would definitely steepen the learning curve and would probably turn some people off the game, but I'd like to see stuff like this.
i like the muddy footprints idea, that's cool
Dragging a body, of a survivor or a zombie away into the bush.
This would be a great idea. You can bury zombies/survivors - but why not have a drag mechanic.
The Weyland-Yutani motion tracker in the thumbnail brought me here.

Today I learned that a small stone and any boulder make knives. I always thought you needed a 2nd small stone
That’s actually a new 1.18 change, so don’t feel bad.

Were you on mushrooms when you told them?
its pretty common knowledge to those who actually play dayz..
yeah Ive noticed for awhile.
However with mushrooms and fruit spawn points many mushrooms of fruit can spawn at one spawn instead unlike small stone spawn points."
Damn.. That 10 second sentence really fuckd my brain
Last time i was betrayed by a mushroom was in the 90's picking liberty caps, I still have flashbacks to this day.
Seen a cluster of mushrooms on the Zero servers & I remember thinking it was the Admin’s creativity making a newbie spawn point a little more luxurious. Now I reflect back on it more skeptical

This is the most useful dayz guide ive seen in years
very good info yet again, as a modder some of the things you said make sense and help narrow down future modded ideas and other things in the future.
Just don’t camp inside. Have camouflage and stay low. And turn this information around on the people who would use this as a strategy.
i think mushrooms and fruits spawning on your camp location is great since most people don't pay attention to it and because and if they do thats the risk of your camping all you have to do is listen for footsteps and have your back against a bush only having to look one or 2 sides to notice the mushroom sniffer
I am still convinced that a Rooster or chicken notifies me of players coming through my town.
if you relog and animals/roosters are still there, players are nearby

The missile knows where it is at all times.
However, the missile must also know where it was.
so much intersting, there is always something to learn about DayZ!
good to see that meta issues from literally 10 years ago in the mod are still in the game

That was actually
My best survival time is 50 hours. I was literally camping in an improvised shelter west of Staroye. I started just going AFK and trying to max out my survivor time until server restarts. I was AFK when I was killed.

1:56 It’s also known as an “Earth Rock”. While watching Smoke’s livestreams it will only be referred to as an Earth Rock. 😉
Yet another feat that can be achieved by shrooms
Excellent work WOBO, this was the vid I was waiting for. Once again your dedication to research is exceptional. Many thanks.
"SNAIL LOOKIN' $$$"
Very helpful video, thank you sir
Is the 100m strictly horizontal? Or could a camper 100m off the ground in a tower have no items spawn around them?
Also does this mean you can work out how long a camper has been there by the number of shrooms/fruit in a single spawn point, like 2 equals 30mins, 3 equals 45mins?
You could probably guestimate based on the number of mushrooms how long someone has been there, since 1/4 mushroom spawns are active at a time for 15 minutes at a time, a spawn would be active once an hour so it could spawn a second mushroom in the same spot, meaning a player has been there more than an hour but less than 2, so on and so forth.
its a 100m sphere around the player
