When buying the horse wormer Ivermectin that you will not be giving to a horse you really should empty the entire contents of the tube into a container (the container should be able to be closed and air tight for storage). You should then mix the paste before dosing (and to be safe every time you dose). The Ivermectin is NOT evenly distributed in the paste. It is meant to be given in it's entirety so it does not matter for horses. But for other animals who are not getting the entire tube all at once they can be over dosed or under dosed when it is not mixed. It can be dangerous.
Also, it needs to be dosed at least three times in periods of 10 to 14 days. Unless treated three times it can be ineffective.

Hello. I have this fur mite problem and I've read that Ivermectin is good to treat it. Is there a indication on how old the rabbit has to be in order to use it? What about weight? My rabbit has it in initial stage and I have another bunny of about 3 months that I need to treat for prevention. The one with the problem has 8 months... thanks for any comments that can help me :) I love bunnies

Gloria Elena Ruiz im not sure about age and weight as these are products intended for use in bovines and equines. If your concerned you could use food grade mineral oil directly on the mites to smother them, its extremely safe, i used ivermectin this time because i didn't have the time for a continuous treatment. Also if you have facebook I highly recommend you join the group "back yard meat rabbits" they have several thousand members and a ridiculous amount of knowledge that they all gladly share. I'm very sure you could find an answer about age and weight there. sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Diatomaceous Earth also works for getting rid of fur mites.
From online research here are some dosage guidelines. (But any doubt you should really contact a vet. It is possible to over dose your rabbit.) This information was just gathered from forums and website. I would double check everything before proceeding.
The oral form (horse wormer ivermectin) (This is almost twice as strong as the injectable one. So you can easily over dose your rabbit which is very unsafe.)
"The paste, the 1.87%, is usually dosed at a tiny rice-grain size dot per 4-5 pounds." Another said, " No more than a pea sized amount on the tip of a popsicle stick" (this was in reference to a 5 and 6 pound rabbit.)
It needs to be repeated three times in intervals of every 10 to 14 days. You will need to bleach everything in the cage and the cage then wash with hot water and soap. You need to do this for the entire dosing time frame and a couple times after the last dose. There will still be fur mites and eggs in the environment.

Hello, I noticed that you also have chickens.
Would like a video on that, I also have started with 4 one month old hens and 2 rabbits..
I'm planning to put the rabbits on top and chickens on bottom, what you think about that..
Appreciate your response and thoughts on this.
    Cheers..

Thanks for sharing these tips. Currently have a rabbit which has mites which I'm not really sure what type and most vet's here can't treat them. Are there any side effect's and can I buy this on any drugstore? There is an Ivermectin for humans too, right.
