    Gong reveal the unspeakable to Steve Davis, in support of new studio album 'Rejoice! I'm Dead!'

    Filmed at Nomadic Community Gardens, Shoreditch, London by George Laycock of Blacktide Phonic/Visual
    “I have been co-presenting The Interesting Alternative Show with Steve Davis for the last six years or so,” says Kavus Torabi, Gong’s singer and guitarist. “In 2011, Steve rang up excitedly saying ‘You'll never guess who we've got as a guest next week... Daevid Allen.’ I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I'd met Daevid briefly a couple of times with Tim Smith [Cardiacs] but never properly. As a lifelong Gong lover, this filled me with delight. Straight away the two of us seemed to really click, within minutes the conversation had taken a turn for the absurd and I was more than a little flattered when he told me, after about an hour, ‘You're a poet man, I can tell."
    And now, Kavus’s radio co-presenter Steve Davis interviews Kavus himself about being the singer of Gong. The film you are about to watch, or are watching, was shot in the Nomadic Community Gardens, in London’s Shoreditch. Davis talks with Kavus and bassist Dave Sturt about carrying on Gong’s legacy, taking it forward and throwing their own take into the fold. Why did they continue? What’s the future? Watch this enlightening interview and you will find out.
    Rejoice! I’m Dead! is available now through Madfish on CD, a double LP and as a limited edition deluxe 3 disc hardback book edition featuring 44-page book, CD, DVD-AV & Bonus CD and digitally.

    When I was doing mushies on the local golf course as a kid in the 80's, you would have blown my mind even further saying I'd hear Steve Davis sing 'Have a Cup of Tea' in the 21st century.
    True Progress!

    Gong is, was and will always remain one of the seminal bands of free-floating, anarchic (in the best sense of the word) music. Madly in love with all incarnations of the band. Keep the legacy of Allen alive, but also continue to write more new music.. Thanks!!!!

    Kavus has huge credibility via the Cardiacs, so is a great replacement. I saw Gong in Macclesfield (of all places) about 10 years ago and was lucky enough to chat with the band who were really nice people. Steve Davies is a huge (and pleasant) surprise in this video; great stuff!

    Steve Davies - legend and Gong guru: who would have thought he'd be in the frame and on cue for this role, never snookered for a comment, he has this interview in his top pocket! Rejoice is a brilliant continuum of the band's legacy.

    Very interesting interview. Found it purely by chance when playing master builder on youtube. A real eye-opener that the snooker Maestro is a gong fan. I'm still in shock. He's a damn fine and funny interviewer too. He must have bought Camembert Electrique about the same year as me (circa 1974).

    yeah im a big snooker fan but i worshipped alex higgins and steve was his arch nemesis and i thought he was boring as fuck but then i heard he was a magma fan i realised he was cool beyond my wildest dreams. Then one day i turned on the telly to see steve commentating the snooker and he was wearing a camembert electrique t shirt on, what a lord, he must be the only gong listener not to have a toke, not that it mattrers he,s got exceptional taste in music

    • @flaneur5560
      @flaneur5560 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      How do you know he doesn't toke?

    • @dimethaltryptamine1
      @dimethaltryptamine1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think he's very obviously an old acid head from my daze in the very early 70's & 100% a toker smoker too. Without this background you just wouldn't 'get' Gong's lyrics let alone rattle them off like Steve did :)

    • @headintheshedable
      @headintheshedable 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also used to think Davis was as boring as fuck as I was a Higgins fan aswell.
      I later discovered he's well into his music and not a humourless boring old fart at all!!
      Turned out it he could only play as well as he did by intense concentration.
      Moral of the story?
      :Don't judge a book by the cover.
      :)

  • @keltyk
    @keltyk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Didn't realise that was STEVE Davis. That's mental. I got into Gong at about 13 yrs old I suppose. All the early stuff. 'You' wasn't too long out. Allen left. Shamal came out. It was OK. I bought it. 2 yrs later- PUNK was the thing. Then Gong came back as Planet Gong and I saw them. That LIve in Paris 77 LP also came out of nowhere and had its moments- but was aleady history: It was only available on import from an obscure French label) Saw Gong another couple of times. End of the century and not long into the new one. I'd seen Hillage too in the mid 70s. Great. Allen had also released solo stuff the biggest sensation being 'Now is the happiest time of Your LIfe' (His solos up to that point are essential Gong) That made an impact despite punk being the main thing. I was in senior year in school by then and that album was passed around among the freak contingent. We trod an odd line between punk and psych. We weren't the only ones- Thus 'Here & Now / Planet Gong. Last show I saw was with Allen and Gilli around 2012 I suppose. Weird atmosphere at the gig. Angry people. I was irritable. A pissed Geordie was looking for a fight (knowing he wouldn't get one). Anyway--- I'm not a fluffy psych person anymore. I'm getting old and I'm witnessing a very hardline, bloodthirsty religion hammering Europe while the press kid on it isn't. I notice the 2nd Cold War happening with China refining what the USSR began - Watch Yuri Bezhmenov on TH-cam for details but don't expect a convincing conclusion to his speech) So... where now? We will see

      I saw them twice in Manchester last year, the show with the Ozrics. They were really spot on. I was a lucky enough to share a pint with David when he was around in the early 2000's, I plucked up the courage to ask him for a drink and an autograph, which he duly did, and then spent half an hour politely answering my chemicalised questions, and wished me the best of luck with the band I was in at the time.
      Absolute gent. What a night✌️

    A great Bob Marley track, "No Daevid No Gong". (I'll show myself out....) In all seriousness, and despite that I don't know enough about the full Gong history to know who these blokes are, this is one of the best interviews I've ever seen. (I did however recently acquire at great expense, an original French LP of Camembert Electrique, which has become one of my favorite LPs of all time in a short time.)

      tim wigby LOL. 'Tis true. Steve DJs his own prog radio show, writes a regular article for Prog Magazine, and appeared in one of the first editions of said magazine showing off his collection of classic prog and space rock vinyl. He is definitely "one of us."

      Well you learn something everyday here on the old "you tubes" don't you??? Sounds like his "Prog" credentials are better than mine but that is fine with me !! Any one out there heard of a German band called "Sand"??? Just discovered them 1970's space rock/prog? Good stuff - How about Neptune Towers ?? A ambient/Electronic outfit from Norway (a side project of Fenriz from black metal band Darkthrone believe it or not) very tangerine dream retro synth ??
