When David Bowie was asked in 1997 what song he wished he had written he said “ the one that comes to mind immediately is Ship building. I think it is one of the most beautiful songs written, stunning piece of work, makes me cry...just the opening bars, specifically the Robert Wyatt version, I think it’s just the most tragically beautiful song.”
What seems to always be missing when talking about Robert is what a brilliant drummer he was. Listen to the first four Soft Machine Albums, particularly 3. He really was one of the best in the late sixties.
i dunno, hear me out..at this point, wyatt had been paralyzed and hadn't fully drummed in 40 years. I know he had some sort of home-handicap-friendly drum rig. but that being said, he hasn't really been a drummer since '72 or so. i feel it's kinda insulting to ignore that he's moved on from being a drummer to a well-rounded artist and singer. do you think he wants to get asked questions about how he played those drums 40 years ago when he hasn't played since? Especially regarding a band he was non-amicably removed from? he seems like a true progressive artist that would rather focus on recent works. just my two cents.
@@dogconnoisseur His past as a drummer barely gets any recognition. That's all I was saying. I know he's moved on to bigger and better things. When people talk about great drummers from that late 60's early 70's, Robert doesn't get mentioned. What has the manner of his departure from Soft Machine got to do with his drumming chops? He played drums after Soft Machine also. I think it's a bit insulting that his drumming work is basically ignored.
I love his album Rock Bottom. There's an unearthly quality to it, one of the most unique sounds out there and the lyrics just make me smile, there's nothing else like it. I highly recommend it.
Rock Bottom has been my favourite album of all time since 1986! Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard is my second best! Both of them products of Wyatt's artistic genius and generosity, as well as, if I may speculate, the beginning of his lifelong loving relationship with Alfreda Benge, whose artwork for the albums matches the music to synaesthetic perfection. A big thank you to both of you Robert Wyatt and Alfreda Benge!
Such an iconic person, and so enjoyable listening to him. Robert really has something to say. And he is such a "complete" musician. Such a pitty, that this horrible event sent him to the wheel chair forever, so we can't enjoy his drumming anymore. But he composes, he plays beautifully piano, he plays such a beautiful cornet, / you can witness that on Dave Gilmours "On An Island" record), and he is such a pleasure to listen to when he talks.
Nice to hear someone talking SIMPLY about Music eg He had a wide range of Stuff and Brian liked to do droney things He had a bunch of songs which were already the business. I hate the proms night commentators who waffle on and on and use phrases that even they do not understand, wyatt great musicain and in his day brilliant Drummer
I think his best is still "Why Am I So Short?" from the very first Soft Machine album. That record is one of my all-time favorites -- I still have the mold-damaged original album that Led Zeppelin ripped-off for their third record cover. Anyway, a nice autobiographical track.
Perché la direzione musicale che andava in senso tutto strumentale, e non prevedeva l'uso della voce di Wyatt, è stata decisa proprio da Ratledge. Questo ha determinato l'uscita di RW dai SM.
Beren Hamilton he was kicked out, he then formed Matching Mole and made two records with them, it was after that that he had his accident. Ratledge did kick him out of Soft Machine, and long before the accident
Robert is nothing short of a national treasure

And his drumming with Matching Mole was great!
He was a beast
And the stuff recorded before the first album, later compiled on Jet Propelled Photographs, is just as good

Robert Wyatt is a treasure, he needs to be protected at all costs

Best album of all time.
I want it , I want it , I want it , give it to me .

'I never got the whole guitar group thing'...bless you, Robert.
What a legend, so inspirational!
I've listened to his music all my life....love it all .... End of an Ear is one of my favorites

A legend, my favorite.
I love him, his music, his words. His soul. And Alfie too
Legend.
This is lovely. Thank you.
Legend !
Robert Wyatt, one the very few ESQUIREs still alive. Lawrence Sterne - Alexis Korner - Kevin Coyne ... please stay with us, Robert !
This man is so beautiful.
Always liked Robert...

Love this thank you bbc 🙌
Wish Robert would do one last tour

The kind of guy I'd like to know.
❤️
You know, Robert Wyatt would have been a fantastic drummer for The Grateful Dead, and no worse a singer than Jerry Garcia -- probably better.
It's called Wellington House on Canterbury road
It's still there, albeit tarted up with locked gate and a pair of dobermans to keep out the riff raff.
A true English original
Never got the guitar group thing. Hatfield and the North made Matching Mole tunes sound heavier and better so that makes sense. 😂
I'm here bud
"i never got that guitar group thing"
*jack off motion*
@piafounet Yes "you'll get on with him he is bald like you!" lol
Why cannot he bring himself to say Mike Ratledge's name?
because Ratledge wasn't in the Wilde Flowers?
Because he pushed him out
Perché la direzione musicale che andava in senso tutto strumentale, e non prevedeva l'uso della voce di Wyatt, è stata decisa proprio da Ratledge. Questo ha determinato l'uscita di RW dai SM.
the hair thing is true nowadays too
Because Ratledge pushed him out the band doing a fatal mistake.
thelonious Robert fell out of a window and couldn’t play drums anymore, Ratledge didn’t kick him out of the band.
Beren Hamilton he was kicked out, he then formed Matching Mole and made two records with them, it was after that that he had his accident. Ratledge did kick him out of Soft Machine, and long before the accident
@@danielbrown8556 matching molle is French for soft machine
Comet removed
Plenty of lame people have long hair these days...
I'm one of them :(
me too :)
Dumbledore got fat... lmao
