Wow this commentary is amazing. I love Chuck's arc and you actually managed to capture it perfectly through fashion. He's also one of the best dressed men I've seen.
I love Chuck’s fashion and can never understand why more men on tv don’t dress up? As a woman, I love it! Nothing better than when someone actually takes pride in their appearance, as opposed to what’s usually portrayed on tv- old ratty jeans and a big oversized t-shirt. Chuck definitely expressed himself through his clothes, and subconsciously matched himself to Blair. There are so many references to them (even in early season one) matching colors and styles. Fashion was definitely their love language.
such an interesting video! it's making me realize how much of Chuck's look was the male compliment to Blair's- he was the only one who could match her on a sartorial level- one of the many reasons she fell so hard for him. As you mentioned- as a leading male character on tv at the time he was a major anomaly- a straight man who very much cared about his clothing- like the idea was to show men watching that caring about your appearance didn't make you "gay"- as the word was often used at the time in a majorly derogatory way. I think also ed westwick being british gave him a much more european flair- even though the character is American, there's definitely something about a non-american actor's take on it that gives a different vibe.
Ed definitely pulled it off well because he’s English in real life, and something about his clothes felt like an homage to that. For Chuck, the character, it also felt right because he’s trying to embellish his aristocratic background by dressing the part, even though I think the show said Bart grew up poor & was self-made. So Chuck is technically only second generation to the upper-east siders… basically new money.
@@luckyDancer100 That's a great point. Blair, Serena, and Nate all come from old money families who had at least a century and a half of generational wealth at their respective disposals. This is a very stark contrast with the Bass family wealth that had only been accumulated within Bart's (and possibly even Chuck's) lifetime. This would have put a tremendous amount of pressure on Chuck to make an extra effort to fit in with his peers and the UES old money society at large. And honestly, he as a character and Eric Daman as the costume designer did a fantastic job of communicating this. Chuck Bass is by far the best dressed male character on the show but not to the point that it takes the viewer out of the story. It's elevated without being excessive and grabs attention without screaming for it. Excellent work all around and a great detail to touch on!
@@luckyDancer100 yep- Chuck does say in one episode that Bart grew up with very little- and probably did try to teach chuck to dress like "old world money"- later on in the show Russell Thorpe and his daughter do the same thing- although there's an extra layer given they are POC- but that's never explicitly said..
I think most men would benefit from dressing like Chuck Bass honestly. It is a classic style especially after he started wearing the suits. The first season or so was okay but the suited up Chuck? Perfect.
I so agree- BUT, a basic wardrobe of Chuck's suits and sport coats would take several month salary to buy. A good off the peg men's suit is nearly always plus or minus $1,000 these days, and the cheap ones will not look very Chuck Bass
Thanks for making a video about Chuck's style. I'm a man in my thirties and I love style, but I often find it difficult to watch out for new inspiration and icons to look up, whereas women style is much more common in popular culture. For instance, there are much more videos and articles covering Jenny, Blair and Serena's style, whilst there are were few regarding the men in 'Gossip girl'. One thing I would like to mention about the subject is that the three major characters in the show -Chuck, Nate and Dan- had major distinctive styles. As you have mentioned, Chuck is more focused on tailoring and fitting, but in a sharp way, often wearing contrast colors, accessories and plaids that make him stand out; Nate takes inspiration from Iannis Port style and presidential dynasties, combining preppy yet athletic elements, with knitted sweaters, mariner coats and so, in the line of Ralph Lauren; and regarding Dan, his style is more boho, bohemian but masculine; he tries to embody this creative persona, imitating icons as Johnny Depp, with leather bands, vests, silver jewelry and mail bags.
As you mentioned Chuck did evolve. The peacock look became a more refined look toward the end of the series. I could better relate at that time. His open tenderness toward Blair became more relatable to me also. I did not agree with so much use of the bow tie throughout the series. It seemed kind of outlandish and unnecessary to me. However, it was his personal style and certainly not mine. How about this; I wore an ivory dinner jacket with shawl collar and pearl buttons to my wedding many years ago. Bogart in the movie Casablanca was my inspiration. I added a pink bow tie and I had white gloves stuffed into the breast pocket as a pocket square. Of course, I like your videos. Well researched. Much success to you. Fun is what we do.
Okay I'm not even 25% into the video yet but I am FLOORED that you tossed up that Oscar Wilde quote because not four hours ago I quoted the SAME EXACT THING to one of my customers at work while discussing the importance of putting your best foot forward in terms of outward presentation!!! I had to pause and make this comment! 😂
It’s so lovely seeing a face with a namesake! I have been admiring the absolute complexity and breadth of sartorial information in these videos for a while now! As a professional artist and image consultant myself I’m loving this channel
I love this video! Chucks style is the best. I would love a video on the fashion from the tv show Revenge. Daniel Grayson’s style is the Hampton’s version of chuck’s & Emily Thorne was so well dressed!
Thanks for doing a men’s fashion analysis. You are amazing, and I appreciate your expertise. A clever take on traditional and innovative men’s style is greatly needed. Thanks
I am watching GG and they way Chucks character has evolved I am intrigued and really like his character. I have searched for his style analysis a few times and I just watched your video it's so detailed good job, but I DO REALLY MISS OLD VOICEOVER.
Chuck was so extra but he always managed to own it and it didn't ever look like the clothes were wearing him. A true style icon.

I was about to comment that. I think he's an anomaly even today: a manly man who has a lot of flair in his style. A modern day dandy if you will.
yes definitely! he very much had that old world vibe@@leriava

Great video! I wish more men would be brave enough to dress uniquely and show individuality. Chuck Bass is a style icon
Chuck bass - purple shirts, purple ties, purple bathrobe. Nobody has ever looked so good in purple!
