I wanted a decent Necromunda board that could be set up quickly ( limited game time in evenings). I aimed for a presentable 3x3 table. Purchasing the terrain box sets, using four fixed single level tiles in common configurations. The rest of the terrain being used individually as columns, walls and scatter pieces from Killteam. This compromises storage space, set up and time. 1 foot squares shelf of fixed tiles and 1 large terrain box to store with 15 minutes set up time. The cost is at lot less but still hight. In my case purchasing over a few years makes the investment seem less heavy.
Yeah I know where you’re coming from. Your setup totally makes sense. I note you said “investment SEEMS less” 🤣🤣 it’s never really less though. It’s just more spread out, making the pain more bearable .
I'm close to having enough GW ZM terrain to fill a single layer 4x4 for Horus Heresy / Nercomunda. GWs boxes of columns & walls are ridiculous and I've got a lot of mine from Necromunda boxes and individual sprues. Even that, with my plan of recreating two of every old Forgeworld resin tile (two of each: Realm of Battle Zone Mortalis Set 1 / 2) for 16 tiles, requires: 46 columns 84 single wall sections It's a huge financial and time investment. I've got tons of platforms and stairs and barely even begun to assemble those. My plan after having the above all modular, is to start creating some setpiece tiles: A marketplace and some 'Badzone Delta-7' tiles for Necromunda, hanger and gundeck tiles for Horus Heresy ship, etc. Of course, at some point I need to paint them, too!
Yeah, this terrain is an incredible investment in both time and money. Necromunda and Horus Heresy are great games but every so often I think, “a battlemat, a few trees and some easy rocks”, would look just as good on a table and take so much less effort. 🤣🤣
How about a Stronghold set? How it actually impacts the rest of sets? Is it universal enaugh to mantain ZM modularity you showed in other videos, or it is hard to mix and should be treated like a completlly different beast?
You’ve actually just saved me a fortune, and I just binged all your videos! And everything you’ve said is everything I’ve been annoyed by when I was working out tile or mod so thank thank you. I have 2 questions. What battle map would you suggest for Necromunda? Can you do a how to on you green sump pits?
You’re very welcome. Glad to help. I was just as frustrated as you hence these videos. I’m actually sitting working on a battlemat video right now and have a sump one in the pipeline. So stay tuned.
Love this idea....I have several GW kits....which i like.....BUT....I also very much enjoy scratch building my own....cant wait to watch the rest of your videos!
A little controversial but i love using 3d printed terrain and scatter scenery not only are they cheaper but they look great once painted up. my 3x3 table at the time cost me around £360 which is £600 cheaper then GW. great vid by the way keep up the great work
Not controversial as almost all of my scatter terrain is 3D printed. I found though if you’re not a fan of layer lines on bigger pieces then resin prints end up being around the same price (if you don’t print it yourself and buy it). Thanks!
Thank you so much for this playlist of videos! All are great and you present them brilliantly. I'm just getting into Necromunda, even though I brought Underhive and Dark Uprising box sets when they came out: At what point does a 'pile' shame become a 'tower'? Definitely not adding to it with Legions Imperialis. Nope. Well not until it arrives Dec 2nd... But anyway - these videos are extremely helpful and have made me draw up a list of things to do and a good order to do them in so thank you. And absolutely have not ordered 10 3D-printed civilians to place in & around the market stalls... Hello. My name is Robert and I have an addiction.
🤣🤣🤣 oh man, down that slippery slope you go. Although if you have Dark Uprising you started on that path a while ago!! Oh I wish mine was just a pile. I now have mountaineers knocking on my door eager to reach the summit!
I actually learned to cast so I could save money and save build time. Btw "casting silicone" is really expensive. I use silicone caulk as a first layer then fill the rest of the negative with gelatin.
I know what you mean. Most casting stuff is expensive. Although I found that kids Play Doh works well but you have to leave it, like a week to harden. Coat it in PVA, paint it and you’d never know what it was. 😀
@@thestateofplay2023I'm further along. I cated all my wall sections based off your ideas on basic shapes. The resin did get alittle distorted in the molds due to keeping them tight while it set up. I had to true them heightwise on the table saw after about a week (urethane shrinks a tiny bit). Then I had to use epoxy sculp to true the ends. The end result is fine but I really just traded money for time. Oh and even though they are hollowed out it is still much heavier than plastic..or playdough. Still I'm very happy with the result and you have been a great help. They are primed and they and my board are just posted to the Reddit necromunda board. I'm mundapants there if you make ght want to see some fruit of your labor. Thanks again Will.
I saw this video about an hour too late. Damn the youtube algo! I've bought some terrain for Necromunda hoping it would be enough to cover a small board of 2x2 and nope. Not even close. I'd need at least double what i purchased, most likely 3 or 4 times as much for the most basic layout. 😐
Sadly yes. But you’re lucky you found this series as I explain across a bunch of videos how to fill a 4x4 table on multiple levels using much less stuff and saving loads of money 👍🏼
I think at the minute I'm getting one more pack of columns/walls and one more of stairs/walkways. Currently only have the walls from Hive War (which I somehow got for £55 new) Then gonna DIY a lot of extra columns and walls using the foam from your other video. I figure put the walkways kit on top of the DIY walls then the official ones will just click on there for a second level if needed. Also basically got a set of boarding actions terrain for free by buying Gallowdark and selling the kill teams, book etc. That plus the Imperium stuff mixed in and an inordinate amount of cheap pipes should bulk out a board nicely. For tiles I'm using Maze of the Dead which are £28 for 4 and have LED lighting options but admittedly take a while to build and the price might jump up when I put RGB in them. Even with all that those shortcuts though it ain't cheap is it? Although one slight correction.. you can use ZM in two games as Horus Heresy has a ZM mode
That’s sounds like a fantastic plan to fill a table. Yeah I use ZM in about 10 different games. It makes a great Day of the Dead style bunker for Zombicide. Works as a shelter for Fallout too.
🤣 yeah, expensive wasn’t it. Trees. Hmm. I’ve made my own trees. I did it once. And boy, was it a pain in the butt. I saved very little money and eventually it was actually cheaper just to buy ready made trees. Especially for the larger ones. For smaller trees you can put together into a copse on a large base I picked up the cheapest ones I could find on Amazon. They’re not great and about a 3rd I binned. BUT, the ones I kept worked really well. However they’re cheap looking with shiny plastic but after a quick coat of Matt varnish and then some green washes with a light green/yellow/brown drybrush they look really good.
The platforms, ladders and stairs is a great kit imo. You spend the majority of your time looking down on the top parts of the terrain so its worth spending a litle extra to make the tops look legit. The columns and walls kit howver is such a massive con. they should have one large gate, one small gate, then one extra short and one extra long wall section. minimum
Honestly it’s all going to depend on price. Because at this point I can make anything for my necromunda table with a laser, 3D printer or even scratch.
You joke about flying over and buying GW stuff from the US...but my dad is a pilot and flies to London from the US at least once a month. He used to bring stuff back for me, but the GW employee gave him a new option. I can't believe it works this way, but now my dad puts the order in in person, he pays in GBP, and everything ships from Nashville to my house. So, I'm paying GW premiums (no discounts) but it ends up being a lot cheaper than US prices.
Omg! This!! High point armies were expensive but… Nothing compared to how much terrain Necromunda requires. High rise architects balk at how much you need for a cool table!
