Could you do more recommendations on books with surrealism writing? Surrealism art, film, was always kind of a shelter to me; Today, suddenly, I thought "Do the surrealist genre exist on writing? I need it!" And I stumbled upon your video; Turns out I'm so amazed and once again I found my place, my shelter, surrealism is the weird place where I find myself. Please make more videos like this, you are amazing and your explation was incredible ♡
Lovely intro. I agree with your reaction to the magical realism comment. Great selection of books. The only one I've read is Nadja , which I very much enjoyed. Many folks have recommended The Hearing Trumpet to me . I need to.get to that soon. 😍
This sounds like a fascinating month! I've explored some magical realism but I feel like I have no grasp on surrealist literature, so I shall be watching avidly to see how your reading month goes.
Literally into every book on this tbr! I REMEMBER THAT TWEET AND YOU SENDING IT TO ME Oh, Leonora Carrington :P I was obsessed with her as a teen, not sure if I ever told you that :P NADJA OH MY GOSH YASSS I think I just ordered myself a copy because I got too excited xD
your cat at the beginning of the video!!!!!!!!! 😍 ohh this seems like you're up for a month of really fascinating reads!! i'm actually taking a class on magical realism this semester which two sessions in like it probably sides more with the sentiments from that tweet you read out so i'm interested to see both what the upcoming weeks of this class will bring and also i'm excited to hear your thoughts on the books you'll read and how that changed or did not change your opinion on what constitutes magical realism that you have now
Hahaha, he's such a cheeky monkey. He loves it whenever one of us is in the garden, but even if I briefly bend down, he'll be climbing all over me, haha, such an attention seeker! Oohhhh, it would be interesting to hear what you learn about magical realism in your class! It sounds odd that at a university level, sentiments would be so rigid, but as with many genre theory and classification of literature, it can mean so many different things to each person that you can find essays for every conceivable opinion there is! Haha
Another pile of intriguing looking books most of which I know little about but I'm so looking forward to your thoughts on them and continued discussion of the magical realist/surrealist components of books.
I definitely agree with you that that would be a too narrow definition of magical realism. I get where that person was coming from but while the origins lie in Latin America for sure that's not necessarily used as a defining characteristic for the genre. For example Günter Grass' The Tin Drum has been classified as magical realism and that's a German novel from 1959 but in terms of genre characteristics it definitely fits the bill.
I’ve been a huge fan of Leonora Carrington’s art for a while, but have never read any of her books. Thank you for making me aware of them! I’m also really looking forward to hearing your thoughts on all of these 🙂
Oohhh, that's so good to hear - I was definitely introduced to her before as solely an artist and it was a pleasant surprise to see she had written novels also!!
I couldn't agree with you more. Although I think cultural appropriation is a must-do if we're going to become a global culture. So I might not be the intended audience of your critique at all.
The beginning is a long way of saying magical realism came from a European literary tradition. There are also, ghast, lots of european descended people in Latin America. I don’t why we need to tip toe around some silly tweet or silly people in general.

I miss watch your videos. Now i find you because I am looking for surrealist novels. 💝
Interesting discussion about the meaning of these different forms of literature. I've been meaning to read Carrington. I loved Woman in the Dunes.
It's been a long time in the running that I've been wanting to pick up Carrington - I'm definitely excited, as I am with Woman in the Dunes!!
