David wrote this verse telling us “The Lord is my Shepherd. Therefore if the Lord is our Shepherd, then we must be the sheep and we must allow Him to lead and guide and protect and comfort us. When we allow God to be our Shepherd we truly find peace and rest. When we try to be our own shepherd we find ourself in more stress, more chaos and finding no rest. Even when we seek to honor God in our lives, the road may not be easy. As Psalm 23:4 says we may sometimes find ourselves in “the darkest valley”. For example in our workplaces things can go wrong. Psalm 23 reminds us that God is near in all circumstances, both good and bad. God will take care of us even in a sometimes-hostile world, “in the presence of my enemies” (Psalm 23:5). It is through the challenges of our lives that God works out His purposes is in us. Psalm 23 concludes by reminding us of the destination of our journey with God: “I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (Psalm 23:6). Whats hard is you can have your past sins removed but the consequences of those past sins can remain life-long; like a lost leg due to drunk driving or having a child out of wedlock, etc etc.
