Got this used last month. God damn this lens is just so small yet sharp and cover a good length of range. Good for both video and photography on x-t5.
Definitely this will be the 1 lens 1 camera light setup.

Right? And yet barely ANYONE talks about it! For my money it beats the Fujinon 18-55 f2.8-4 over and over!
      Definitely the perfect travel lens!

Great video. I think you have persuaded me. You are the first person to say it’s weather sealed. I will trust your advice particularly with the photo of it in the rain.

Thanks for dropping by, from what others have said it might not be fully weather sealed apparently but it definitely has the rubber gasket at the lens mount and you've now seen the conditions I've had it in!
I do believe the Fuji 16-55 red badge will be much better sealed but that is a very expensive and very large lens in comparison!

Hey there, Thanks for dropping by! I had both and got rid of the 15-45 immediately after getting the Sigma. The 15-45 isn't a bad lens but the ONLY advantages is has are size and having powerzoom (if you see that as an advantage) The Sigma SMOKES it in every other way!

for a non-ibis you can also get tamron 17-70 2.8. It is a pretty huge, but not so heavy lens.
I've taken this lens with my X-T30 to Baku and Istanbul and comparing the results to my previously owned 23mm F2 prime i honestly believe that tamron wins at the same focal lenght and the same 2.8 aperture. That's why i sold 23mm f2..

I really want to get my hands on the Tameron for a few days to compare it tbh but yeah from what I've seen it is a BIG lens but does obviously does come with other benefits, if I needed OIS it would be on my shortlist for sure!
I hear SO many mixed things about the 23mm f2, think I would rather have the original 18mm pancake!

I'm trading in my Canon 18-150mm lens, for the Sigma 18-50 f2.8. It seems like a very versatile and extremely good lens. Seems like a good companion for my trip to Hong Kong and Taipei. Besides, getting a camera body with IBIS will help with the stabilization issue anyway.

It’s not a fail safe though, it was a uk made strap from a company called CordyCameraStraps on Etsy but it’s NOT set as a fail safe, it’s just tucked in to stop it swinging about, if you wanted a failsafe I’d look at something look a quick release clip on the end of a cheap strap :) hope this helps!

Just got this little 18-50mm in pristine condition for 350 euros on the used market. I'm stunned by the image quality in such a small and lightweight package! It fits perfectly in my old X-T100. I really like shooting with primes but for me it's important to have flexibility, so I'm pretty sure it will live in my camera body haha.
During my first tests, AF was acting a bit weird, though. Slower than normal and locking focus (with the green squares and all) while the image was not really focused at all. I realized that the previous ower had not updated the firmware to the 1.10 version. Did it last night but didn't have the chance to shoot again after that. Let's see.

hey there, thanks for dropping by! I actually JUST popped this on my X-T30 to test if for you!
SO on the front dial (ISO) you pretty it in and that quickly switches the dial to aperture then you can press it in again to go back to ISO. it's actually really quick and pretty cool. Honestly if you ask the Fuji diehards they absolutely CRY about not having an aperture ring (I get it, I love them) BUT the whole point of this lens is that small compact form factor. I also didn't like the aperture ring on the 18-55 as it didn't have hard stops anyway so negate the point of it IMO
      Hope this helps!

I actually think its best to start with a 23 or 33/35 prime. Doesnt need to be a fast one. New users will be able to concentrate on composition and learn the settings and getting the most out of their Fuji. The temptation with zooms is just to zoom in and out without any thought other to get closer or further away. This also is a direct route to the full fuji experience with aperture rings.
The sigma is nice and comparing to my 16-55 i decided to sell the 16-55. The 16-55 is much better at the long end, but taking a global look at the images and not comparing, very happy with the sigma. It has a few areas of weakness but for my use the positives outweigh those.
So no it's s not a free ride. If you dive into the raw files it is clear without pixel peeping that there is a lot of in camera image correcting going on - more than most lenses. For vignetting especially, but also distortion. If you shoot jpeg or just prefer to keep the jpeg and ditch the raw wherever possible then not such a big deal how the final image is achieved if you're happy with it. But it can affect borders and corners if you edit, especially brightening could introduce more noise in those areas that need correcting.
Compared to say the 30mm f2.8 the close focussing results in heavy distortion and image degredation, too. But as long as you are aware and dont buy it for these reasons, its OK i guess.
And to get the image quality I want, I have to stop down to f4 at all focal lengths.
If you have good light, prioritise portability, must have a constant aperture, then this is a great option. For optimal IQ, especially for image corners in post, the 16-55 and even more cheaper, lighter primes will be better. And the 18-55 offers both an aperture ring and OIS for half the price on the used market - not everone has ibis and for video some kind of stabilisation is essential. A pity also for the unusual fileter thread size.
However, for all these caveats, a good lens to have just in case and where size and weight are the prioirity and you don't know which prime would be best or where you might have to adapt to changing conditions often. The problem for me is when I'm in a changeable situation, it's not just about the focal length, but aperture and an aperture ring is just so much better than the bit laggy response using the camera dials with this lens. Will be my last lens with no aperture ring.

      Hi there!
Firstly thank you for taking the time to write what is easily the longest comment my channel has received to date, I did enjoy hearing your thoughts.
I took a while to respond because I work 11 hour days and felt I needed to really sit down and make time specifically for this comment so hear we are.
I don’t necessarily disagree with regarding starting on primes alone, hell, that’s how most of us were introduced to the x-system cameras anyway haha
I think starting with a prime will definitely help a upcoming photographer work on compositions, settings and as you say, get more from their system but there is something to be said when a little more reach or a little more width are the only options to make the shot you need OR want, zooming with your feet is a start and gets the ‘tog more involved in the image (in my opinion) but I do feel both options can and should be considered - especially nowadays when “kit zoom” doesn’t automatically mean garbage like it used to when I started haha
I feel comparing the 16-55 lens is a little bit entertaining to me considering we are talking about a (relatively) cheap standard zoom lens vs a professional grade lens at an rrp of £979. That are not remotely in the same league but you are right that EVEN in that comparison, the sigma has SOME advantages over it (size being the main one) I feel a better comparison would be the xf18-55 f2.8-4 but even that is considerably more expensive new and both lenses offer something a little bit different, I’ve owned both and thanks to have a body with IBIS, I still own the Sigma, if I didn’t have IBIS, it would be the Fuji 18-55 without a doubt. I am surprised you kept the sigma over the red badge lens though as I’ve heard nothing but good things about it - did you mainly switch for weight or size out of interest?
The XC18-50 would also be a fantastic but VERY budget option for users requiring OIS!
To compare image quality again on primes vs zooms is… well, primes are almost always sharper, brighter and correct SOOC, that’s why I mainly shoot them too. But to have a 18/35/50mm prime just isn’t convenient for every starting out, especially if that haven’t had chance to try different focal ranges, a zoom DOES allow for that and lets people experience varying background compression even on an 18-50.
glad you mentioned about filter size, this is something I feel so few people even look at when buying a lens, that said I don’t use too many myself.
The aperture ring debate is an interesting one, I LOVE the feel of an aperture ring and it definitely gives me some childlike joy feeling the tactile feedback of the bump but because I’ve used so many other systems previously I can very quickly switch to using a dial (like I do with the sigma on my X-T4). I had a bigger issue losing the shutter/iso dials when I used the X-s10 for a year but I can also appreciate that not everyone feels the same and when in a professional shoot I tend to start with aperture priority as my base anyway - that is when I find having the aperture ring to be particularly nice.
For me the tactile failure of Fuji is to not have a genuinely nice feeling manual focus on their lenses, recently I’ve come to find Viltrox actually feel MUCH better for manual focus than Fuji glass, I don’t know if you have any thoughts you could share there?
Regardless, it was fun responding to this and again, than you for the time taken to comment and I hope you find some joy in this debate!
      Keep shooting

@@FeralGinger for me the reason to go with the sigma is about weight, but not in the obvious way.
I don't actually mind the weight. I've travelled with the 50-140 and would do so again. But the range of a standard zoom is where there are so many great primes to choose from, and that's where I get the greatest enjoyment. So either I would take a standard zoom as a back up to a set of primes, or I would take a slower standard zoom, plus fast prime for a smaller kit. With the 16-55 as the zoom, I'm less likely to take my favourite fast primes because of the total kit weight.
And if I take the 16-55 I'm just tempted to stick to that. I did that last summer...and felt my composition was just not as good, I wasn't looking for interesting angles so much, even if the IQ was great. I feel the 18-50 is more suitable for these situations. I did consider the 18-55 also and might still give it a try.

    • @FeralGinger
      @FeralGinger  ปีที่แล้ว

That's an interesting perspective and absolutely understandable reasoning, I DO find that when I take the 18-50 I am definitely less inclined to take my 35 and 56mm primes!
Travelling with the 50-140 must be amazing to be honest, that and a 27 or 35 and I'd be more than set!
      Thanks again for the conversation!

What makes this lens a hard choice as a starter lens is the 18-55 kit lens is significantly cheaper when buying a new camera. I’m getting an XS20 and seeing lots of others online really stuck between these 2 lenses specifically for video. Would you still recommend it even if it’s £100 more than the kit lens?

If you were aiming for a non-ibis body then I’d say 100% go for the 18-55 but as you’re going for the X-S20 you’ll already be covered there. So with the Sigma you’re just getting a faster, smaller, sharper lens with some minor weather sealing! Hope this helps.

      @FeralGinger  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey there, firstly thanks for dropping by!
There are so many mixed reviews saying it both is and isn’t weather sealed. The truth it, I’ve had this in some absolutely horrendous conditions-even more since this video and it’s been MOSTLY fine. It has (like all glass in extreme temperature changes) had some fogging in the very worst of conditions but I’m confident and happy abusing this lens on a daily basis and still trusting is for paid work.
I wish I could be more knowledgeable about the full extent of the sealing within the lens but this seems to be a sigma secret and I don’t doubt the Fuji sealing will be more reliable over all. But for the average sprinkle of rain, it’ll be fine, even the X-T4 struggles with extremely downpours as it’s weather resistant not weather proof.
I hope this helps! I’ll do a pinned comment soon with wording to this effect!
      Thanks again!

How do you like the x-T4 over the X-S10? Also, do you notice barrel distortion at 18mm on the Sigma. I noticed some the other day on my X-S10 and can’t figure out if it should be corrected in camera or not. Both lens and camera are running the latest firmwares. Keep up the good work!

I am loving the X-T4, I do miss the even more compact form factor of the X-S10 but the X-T4 is a significant upgrade in every other way, the battery life specifically!
I auto apply lens correction through lightroom and haven't really noticed any issues - also running the latest firmware but yeah, if you don't correct it does have pretty strong distortion. If you search Dustin Abbotts write up it has the settings to manually correct!
