    I love the diversity of Neue Star Wars and have no problem seeing non-white, non-male protagonists. But what modern audiences have figured out is that their demographic has the power to destroy a movie or TV show if it chooses not to show up. In particular, I'm talking about that conservative white audience. Shows like The Acolyte and any family-oriented blockbuster film practically require all segments of the audience to show up or else it's doomed to endless articles about why it failed so badly (even if it breaks even or does so-so business). Things like Star Wars and Marvel have billion-dollar aspirations, and at worst, $700 million global floors. They can't fail even a little or it looks ten times worse.
    What Star Wars fans want (both the incels and regular reasonable ones, like, you know, us) that we've never gotten is a LUKE SKYWALKER in his PRIME movie or TV series. As boring as a regular old generic white male Jedi show about a person who is past his angsty grappling with the Dark Side would be, it's what fans have been denied. Instead it's show after show of NOT-LUKE. And when we get a Luke, it's not the cool hand Luke, but bitter hermit Luke who almost killed his nephew. (I thought this story was great and had no issue with it). It took me a long time to truly understand why so many people hated The Last Jedi, but I think this is it. They just wanted superman Luke in his prime, for at least a little bit. They would have settled for Old Man Luke in his superman Jedi legend role passing the torch to the next batch. But we didn't get any uncompromised hero Luke. I get it. I don't think most fans truly understand why they didn't like The Last Jedi, and glommed onto all the youtube rager videos and let those speak for them.
    What Star Wars needs to do is just find a way to give us a Luke Skywalker in his Prime show. Cast Sebastian Stan. Cast Millie Bobby Brown. Give us these characters in their primes doing incredible things to save the galaxy. I can almost guarantee that if they make the most generic, safe show possible, that fans would switch and be totally in favor of all these alternate, diverse stories being told. There has to be at least ONE story servicing the WHOLE audience, and that means conservative white families need a show that doesn't have any gotchas in it. Lesbian Space Witches are the spinach of Star Wars. "It'll be good for the audience to experience diverse options." Sure, but not when the audience comes to the restaurant expecting (and ordering) nuggets and fries. You just have to give them the nuggets and fries and let them sample the spinach on the side if they choose. You put spinach on their plate at your peril.
    My other grand idea to save Star Wars is to just make the VADER show. Why is this taking so long? The only parts of any of the Disney Star Wars experiment that has been universally beloved is any time Vader or Hayden Christensen shows up. Just DO THAT. Give us a show where Vader is wreaking havoc on the Rebellion. Give us a Hallway scene every couple of episodes where he just lays waste to some opposition. Let him retreat into his meditation chamber a couple of times per episode where he can take his mask off and we can see Hayden's face. Let him retreat into the Force where he can look like himself without the scarring. Give him a Force Quest, like locating Padme's spirit that maybe didn't die, but got trapped in the Force somewhere. Let him have Force-time psychic conflicts with Obi-Wan. Let Darth Maul come to Coruscant to kill Palpatine and it's up to Vader to track Maul down and stop him. How amazing would a three-episode arc of Maul and Vader doing cat and mouse hunts all over Coruscant, with a couple of huge lightsaber battles and maybe even a great ship or speeder battle? This isn't that hard! Just give the fans what they want and they will gladly take the optional things you want to force down their throats.

      WILL SOMEBODY-get this man a Star Wars show. He has absolutely figured it out. Brother you just said so much that I agree with! I’m pinning this comment to this video. #knowitallcertified for REAL! All of this I agree with. That’s what I wanted. Cool hand Luke or Legend Superman Jedi Luke passing the baton yes! I’m primarily a Star Trek guy but we got what we wanted from Picard Season 3 we got the TNG cast for one last legendary ride AND we got it with them at the wheel of the Enterprise D! I still get chills thinking about it! That moment will forever be solidified in my mind as legendary. That’s all the audience wanted from the new trilogy just give us that moment with Luke, Leia, Han, and Chewie in the Falcon together and throw in complaining 3PO and you could have printed money. Introduce Ray with a little more to learn. Give her some pathos about her origin and add in being torn between wanting to learn from Luke and flying the stars with Han. What a story that could have been.
      Completely agree about Vader. They teased us with his big moment in Rogue One then nothing. I’d love to see the kind of stories they were telling in the VADER comics.
      Thank you for that it was genuinely spectacular!

      @@arealknowitall 100% agree on Picard S3. Picard S3 was way too long getting there, but by the time it finally got everyone together on the ship, and let them be the ones to save the Federation one last time, the show was a blast. Even as cynical as I was, it gave me exactly what I wanted and at least did it in as interesting a way as possible. As I was watching it, I was saying, "This is how Star Wars should have done it."
      A second comp for Neue Star Wars is Cobra Kai. I've never seen a better example of respecting the original characters, giving them something to do, and integrating new characters in. Plus, the competing Jedi-Sith academies, I mean, uh, karate dojos, was also exactly how Star Wars should have handled Force users. (caveat: Cobra Kai has gone on about two seasons too long, but it's still tolerable. Glad it's the final season).
      This isn't hard, Lucasfilm! I don't understand why they are giving fans everything except what they clearly, clearly, clearly want. Fans are rejecting what they don't want. Stop giving that to them!
      Okay. Rant over... for today.

      I’m wondering if Disney+’s audience (which I chose to define as currently paying subscribers) skews conservative because of their family-friendly brand. I watched only because it was already free. It’s not nearly good enough for me to pay for a subscription. I assume it also skews young white male because it owns both Marvel and LucasFilms.
      Anyway, I end of with the same conclusion: Disney just doesn’t have enough subs to ignore those market segments.
      EDIT to add: Disney has roughly 150 million subs, about 60% of Netflix’s. Except for “Bluey,” their very most popular shows aren’t anywhere close to 60% of a decent Netflix hit show.

    Thank you for your commentary. The crippling component of this show was its inability to tell a coherent story that involved consistent character development and motivation. All of the other complaints are just noise. In general people do not care what is in the show. People care about the quality of the production. There has been a slew of productions in the past that prove this.
    The jarring character motivation changes alone were enough to throw you out your chair if you were not wearing a seat belt. The sub-soap opera level of writing that repeatedly employed miscommunication or lack of communication as the vehicle to move the plot forward was exasperating. I could go on and on about the myriad of other technical issues in the storytelling and character development that were present in this show, but the cancellation comes down to the fact that not many people watched the show. That outcome is antithetical to the reason for Disney to make the show. They have no obligation to continue to produce a product that does not produce viewership. Let alone viewership that trends negatively and well below its predecessors.

    There's a part of the fanbase that despise the Jedi and claim that they are a rotten, power-hungry institution that were as bad as the Sith and had their fall coming. They say that that was what George was saying with the prequels, but a quick Google search will show you that he actually called the Jedi "the most moral of anybody in the galaxy." What I don't like about The Acolyte, is it recontextualizes the fall of the Jedi from being unprepared for Palpatine's machinations and getting too caught up in Republic politics, to their fall being a direct consequence of them being an awful institution.
    I love seeing flawed organizations and characters, but at the end of the day, the Jedi (or at least the ones we follow like Rey, Luke, Anakin, Ezra, and Sabine) are supposed to be the heroes. The Jedi haters want to take Star Wars and turn it into something it's not, for it to become a universe where there is no good or evil, or heroes and villains. Star Wars in George's words, is for 12-year-olds, but people want to make Star Wars more depressing in the vein of Dune or Game of Thrones.

    From a business point of view, I understand the decision to cancel the show. The Streaming Wars are over; Disney+, Apple+, Paramount, Warner-Discovery, Peacock and others are pulling back. Netflix and Amazon Prime won by default (and are raising prices to match). The massive investments that made sense to executives dreaming about becoming the next streaming giant five years ago no longer make financial sense. That means cutting back on programming in a major way. Anything that is not a bonafide HIT right out the box is on the cutting board. As consumers, we traded in cable for streaming, only to learn that the new boss is the same as the old boss.
    Creatively, I'm disappointed and believe this is a major loss for fans. The Acolyte took bold swing and tried to do something new, not only taking the Star Wars story to a new era, but challenging viewers to think about the Jedi and the Sith in ways they never had to before. No more simple "good" vs. "evil". Those good guys might have good intentions, but they may have institutional blind spots that cause unrecognized harm for others. And maybe those bad guys are not always bent on world domination.
    In addition, the format of the story was not just another version of the Hero's Journey. The Hero is just one of the six main lifestage archetypes in our literature and psychology, but the vast majority of sci-fi and fantasy stories are told in this format. ANH was the quintessential example of a Hero's Journey. The Acolyte tried to be different and speak from a different lifestage (The Maiden). Osha and Mae's innocense and naivety are key characteristics of this archetype. They are actually shadow versions of The Maiden (Damsel and Vixen, respectively, with very distinct characteristics).
    The fans pretty much rejected that this could be a possibility. "Why doesn't Osha have any agency?" "Why does Mae keep changing her motivations?" Because that's what these characters are supposed to do at this stage of their development. The biggest shame of the show not continuing is that the SW audience will not learn that there is more than one way to tell a story.
    We can pretty much guarantee that Lucasfilm is going to learn the wrong lesson from this (See: The Rise of Skywalker). If we get any announcements of new SW projects over the next two years, I'll be shocked if they are anything other that Luke Skywalker's Greatest Memberberry Hits. Unfortunately, that's what this very orthodox audience responds to.

    Love to hear your opinions. I would also like a discussion without terms like “woke.” It’s too easy to conflate “bad and woke” with “bad because of woke.”
    I think the show had bad writing, but most of Star Wars had bad writing. I think the difference is the nature of the “whydunit” genre leads people to ask questions that they wouldn’t ask in a lighthearted adventure. For example, in “Attack of the Clones” we saw Obi-won use the Jedi Mind trick to get someone to stop selling death sticks. I never stopped to ask why the Jedi aren’t running drug rehab centers.
    The show may have been more interesting if it more directly dealt with the issue of verbal confrontation escalating to physical violence, when one side has the authority to use violence. As a real world analogy, I’m thinking of cops (in the US), “qualified immunity” and “defund the police.” For example, Noel Murray of Vulture said that Sol killed Aniseya in a moment of panic then conspired with his fellow Jedi to lie about what happened. But I say Sol did exactly what he was trained to do, any action not obviously deescalatory is hostile. I argue that no Jedi would think he was wrong then. That could be an interesting argument for the show to have.
    I’m basically arguing that Sol killed Aniseya in battle, and the Coven got massacred in battle. If the Coven did not want to be in battle, they should not have drawn their weapons or mind-controlled the Wookie.

      The Jedi and the Brendok witches were only in that "battle" because the Jedi violated their home twice, ignoring a direct order from the Jedi Council.
      Maybe I'm misunderstanding but the show did what you're wishing it would do regarding the confrontation.

    • @JoeCursio
      @JoeCursio 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your response.
      Just to reiterate, my point isn’t that my argument is correct: just that this is an interesting discussion. I could go into more detail about the Jedi/cop analogy, but instead consider this.
      To help frame my argument, I’m reminded of the story that a cop told in the bathroom scene in “Reservoir Dogs.” While the cop was telling his story to other cops, not a single person expressed any concern that the first cop had threatened to kill an innocent and unarmed civilian and was just about to shoot him. Instead, they were laughing about how the idiot (civilian) nearly got himself killed.
      When you are in a confrontation with a group of people who are both highly trained and legally authorized to use deadly force, you need to be aware that deadly force is in their repertoire of addressing conflict.
      The Coven wasn’t just meekly standing around during the confrontation:
      • They were verbally confrontational
      • They mind-controlled the young Jedi
      • One character in the background drew her bow
      • The other mother drew her weapon
      • Aniseya transformed herself and Mae in a suspicious looking manner
      OTOH: Does it suck that the Coven were supposed to meekly accept the Jedi were (potentially) abusing their power? Absolutely.

    • @hoos3014
      @hoos3014 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JoeCursio I don't think we are disagreeing. The tragedy of the confrontation between the Jedi and the witches is the text of the show. Neither side was fully innocent or fully guilty.
      The show tried to use the revelation of the deaths (and Sol's hiding of it) as the impetous for Osha (finally) making a decision to turn to the Dark Side. It worked for me because I understood that this was her character journey all along, but MANY people did not, so I can see why they did not like the show as much.

    I feel like with the money they had there should've been much more grandeur showing the High Republic times. Most I think for any grand vistas was the occasional shot of the Jedi Temple at Coruscant. Like in Andor and the Mandalorian and Ahsoka and Obi-Wan, there are these scenes of grand vistas or large City Scapes that feel bigger, and I'm trying to think back to the Acolyte and most scenes with people in them seemed to be on smaller stages, the Forest fights, dense foggy area, the witches fortress, well a fortress so tight areas, the saloon fight at the beginning, again small area. Even on the Sith planet they do most of their talking in a cave, or looking out but it just didn't feel big, so as you say, where was the money?
    Also, reviewing this with my sister, who is a huge Star Wars fans, I used to share my diecast mini playsets with her(had Hoth and the Carbonite chamber playsets), she said when they were watching it, like the last fight scene with Sol and Qimir, my brother in law was sitting there asking, "who are we supposed to root for?" And that's like the best question ever, who were we supposed to be rooting for here? The downfall of the high republic? But so then we don't like the side that Luke and Obi-Wan are on?
    Yes the movies are from a simpler time, good vs evil, literally guy in a white shirt vs a guy in a black leather suit with a cape. There's been almost 50 years of content since then but that's it's essence, and if they want to say that's not what star wars is, I'm not sure they're right. Can the bad guy with the black leather suit in a cape be cool? Absolutely, should we be rooting for him? Probably not, and he was so cool in fact that you didn't have to root for him, he already had it all going on, he had troops and a giant space station and an empire. Andor stuck to this and did ok, Mandalorian stuck to this and did ok, Ahsoka stuck to this and did ok. Acolyte was like...nah, the Jedi are evil and cover things up and take kids from their parents, and well here were are.
    I think it's just a relic from Bob Chapek's "more content even if it sucks" mantra, and it had started filming before he was out, and they spent the money so Disney was like well, it's something.

      It's strange, people have been complaining about the small scale of the Volume since Mando S2. This show was shot largely on location in Wales and Portugal to address that specific concern and fans STILL aren't satisfied. Now we need larger vistas? It seems we are never satisfied and then wonder why the budgets of these shows are out of control.
      You're right about the show trying to be more than a good vs. bad story. I adored it for that very reason; there's a reason that Luthen Rael is my favorite character in Andor. However, I do acknowledge that is a hurdle for some people, although weirdly Darth Vader is the most popular character in the whole franchise.

I wish they had actually filmed more in those locations they didn't or maybe they did. It's my understanding from some some people I know in Hollywood that the production was nearly finished and then when Bob Iger came back in he told everyone to rethink everything and they actually did a ton of reshoots which is actually what bloated the budget to its $180 million dollar price tag. Which I do concede is unfair to attack it so the things I have issue with in terms over use of the volume was most likely due to these constraints, they said "we're not sending you and the 200 person crew to locations again...get it fixed on the volume sets we have."

      @@hoos3014 No so much vistas but like most of the fight scenes and main dialogue areas felt small, compared to like Andor where the first city you see feels huge, and Coruscant with the Senator feels huge, and when he's running the mission on the planet to steal the credits, and even in the Prison that had a massive scale to it.
      And there have been times where the bad guys win, like Revenge of the Sith and Empire Strikes back, but they were after a film where the good guys get a win, and even in Empire it wasn't a total loss, Han wasn't dead, Luke escaped and got a new hand, the rebel fleet was still ok. Revenge of the Sith kind of had to end how it did to set up A New Hope, and I guess Rogue One too. But the Acolyte doesn't set up who's good or bad, or if they do they turn around and are buddy buddy with them in the next episode, was just all over the place. Qimir kills Osha's friends and then kidnaps her and then she puts on his helmet and sees him taking a bath and is like "ok let's go Sith friend". It was just weird.

    Could I have done with a season 2 if it was actually improved upon from season 1? Like if they fixed their mistakes in terms of storytelling, structure, character building, all that? Yeah I would have loved to see it. However, I'm not confident they, as they are now, can pull that off without it being a dumpster fire much like the first season in those regards.
    The show had some cool things, characters, ideas, and all that but it was so outnumbered by the negatives that it wasn't turning out to be worth it, for me at least.
    I'm rather indifferent to it being cancelled to be honest.
    As for disney, well they are seemingly coming to realize that they need to focus on quality over quantity, entertainment for the viewer and good storytelling should be the focus as those things will be better off for the company financially. I'm not exactly sure how they veered off that track but they seem to be getting back on it with Marvel after about 10-12 disasters in movies and shows in recent years. @@arealknowitall Yeah, I just feel the entire production was fundamentally flawed... 'Fixing' the show would have taken a LOT more than just tweaking the storytelling and improving the character development.

    Hey, maybe they're not doing a Season 2 because it's going to become a MOVIE instead! So the announcement is just a way to get a bunch of publicity. ;)
    And a movie could actually work. If they had it focus on Yoda learning about a potential resurgence of the 'Dark Side', while also dealing with the possible corruption of leaders in his own Jedi Order! And try to explore how these events seem to have been completely forgotten, or ended up being inconsequential and allowed the Jedi to remain 'In Power' until the time of 'The Phantom Menace'.

    Looking forward to being able to see your fan edit, if it turns out to be possible.
    Since Film Threat is joking(?) they’re going to create their own season 2 with action figures and AI writing, would you ever consider the extra work of adding material to your fan version of season 1?

      Idea 1: add a scene in which Osha is reading fairy tales about Jedi. Perhaps she had a childish dream of becoming Jedi before she ever meets them. Mae, OTOH, doesn’t believe in fairy tales. This might help explain why Osha wants to leave no she’s ever known. And since real life cannot match fairy tales, why she was later disillusioned with the Jedi.

    • @JoeCursio
      @JoeCursio 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Idea 2: add some scenes in which one parent is alone with Osha, and the other is alone with Mae. I realize “nature vs nuture” is scientifically simplistic, but it might help explain why their personalities are different when their “nature” is identical. I recall there’s already at least one scene in which the parents have different parenting styles. I think it would be too simplistic to say that Mae was evil because she was raised that way, and vice versa.

    • @JoeCursio
      @JoeCursio 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Idea 3: Have the parents disagree whether Jedi fairy tales are harmless or not. If one character says the Jedi are bad (or evil or dangerous or whatever), that may help change the story from the show writers are saying the Jedi are evil to some characters within the story are saying the Jedi are evil. That way, the majority of us who say the Jedi are unequivocally good can conclude the characters are wrong, instead of the show writers are wrong.

    For all the "woke" stuff everyone wants to champion; there is a simple answer for how to do it right: Netflix, The Old Guard. In that film, there were two gay characters, they didn't detract from the story, nor did they sideline or stand out in the story; they just were. And guess what? No controversy. Here's the thing; if you want representation of "alternative lifestyles" or "woke culture", whatever - then do it in a way where it is simple accepted in the story, and doesn't raise any emotions on either side. Why? Because isn't that what you should be shooting for? Acceptance? There is a good way to do it, and The Old Guard shows you how. Everyone gets what they want; the progressives get representation, and the people against it ignore it, because it doesn't alter the story one way or the other. It can be done - but, if you start by saying "this is the gayest Star Wars ever", before the first episode has aired, and you are pushing an agenda, instead of telling a good story, you are setting yourself up for failure...

      I have said this so many times. “Normal” means not glaring. You don’t see heterosexual couples on tv sucking face they just kiss and we move on with the story. I love your example of the Old Guard, female lead, gay couple as part of the supporting ensemble and it never caused a bump in the road once in my thinking.

    What if I told you. This was a misunderstood show. Kinda like showgirls. It’s a victim of disingenuous criticism. Because it challenged what the audience perceives of things. I could not believe a TH-camr filmento telling his audience that osha learned about Jedi and wanted one. Without meeting one first. That simply did not happen in the show. I can see miss marketing being an issue and a strict standard of what streaming length show is supposed to be. Definitely hurting its chances other than the fact that people didn’t really understand the story because they lack media comprehension skills. Like a reeding a book beyond your grade level in high school. Then whining about all these books suck and garbage. Refusing to understand them. That’s what’s it like listening to people complaining about how acolyte sucks and is the worst Star Wars thing ever made. Enterprise is obviously a character assassination of the Vulcans. How did that show survive 4 seasons. Another thing. When we talk about you have like this so you have to like what I like. Well that goes in every direction in the fandom. More women seem to like the show more than men. Men for most part see it as mediocre. Andor is more interesting to men. Both shows have low numbers. Both expensive to make. Both are complex in story telling. The acolyte had way of story telling unfamiliar to most audiences. The Rorschach test threw most of the audience off. Very different from the more straightforward way that Andor does flash back scenes. However it makes the show better at telling the story. In regard to cutting down the show even further. You’re losing the story and the point of it.

      I would love nothing more than to be found wanting in my assessment. While your assertion that the story is “misunderstood” what you seem to misunderstand is that it is not actually a bedtime story or book, it is a 180 million dollar experimental storytelling model. At no point have I taken a position concerning content where I did not say “this particular bit, while I may not like it in general is not about that…” I don’t like the way the witches were portrayed I still accept this portrayal because I don’t have to like it to objectively understand why the narrative falls apart throughout. My criticisms are not pedestrian observations like some dude bro channel seeking to cut something down because the protagonist is not their gender or doesn’t look like them, my viewpoint stems from decades long nay centuries long proven storytelling…I’ll call them customs, but customs bred from basic storytelling methodology. This series at no time utilizes these aspects. The comparison to Enterprise is false. Enterprise didn’t remotely cost what this experimental storytelling model cost. Notice for all its flaws, Enterprise lasted ONLY three seasons and then they botched the ending. That’s my Star Trek opinion but I cannot deny the series adhered to classical narrative structure. The Acolyte in the other hand for all its flaws, I didn’t see it as “woke” I saw it as a good story with great ideas told badly. That’s from a strictly narrative non-subjective viewpoint of how the best stories throughout time have been told. There is lots to like just not enough for a meaningful audience to stick around or make the notion of another season tenable to the powers that be. It’s not that complex on its face either. Complexity is a thing the simple attempt to hide behind in order to justify liking something that failed. It’s ok to enjoy the things you enjoy you don’t have to try and fansplain it. Just enjoy it. I will never attack you for that. I love the movie The Last Action Hero which is by the same metric I use here a terrible movie. Still I enjoy it. I make no excuses for it. I don’t defend it. I just enjoy it despite the detractors.

    When a child fails or does something wrong they blame others instead of taking accountability. Disney is ran by a bunch of children now. I get it that it's Lucasfilm. Lucasfilm and Marvel answer to Disney. And Disney needs patsies for all their failures.

      @@arealknowitall Hey I don't blame you! lol
      And wanted to mention that I'd been wondering the EXACT same thing as you... WHY did Disney buy the Star Wars brand, and then try to completely RE-INVENT the franchise and alienate a large portion of the 'built in' legacy fan base?
      I'd think that Disney could have produced and marketed the HELL out of a NEW 'Space Opera' IP focused on these new ideas, and even released multiple concepts to find a 'winner' before getting close to spending $4B! It seems like they bought the property mostly for the TITLE, and ability to feature the names X-Wing & Light Saber.
