  • I've received a number of comments over the years from people calling me a loser because I'm an adult who collects toys and action figures? Are they right? Why do I collect toys? In this video I'll explain why people distance themselves from toy collecting as a hobby and I'll show off my AWESOME toy collection.

You've have earned a sub. I run into the issue all the time, I do bodybuilding as a stress reliever, I go to the gym and workout for 2-3 hours and instead of posting fitness pics or PR's of my lifts or pose pics. I post pictures of my hot toys and marvel legends figures. I get a lot of people I go to school with and people at my gym just giggle at me and it use to bug me but now I've come to a point and you mentioned it in this video, I use to get mad and lash out but I began to think. They laugh and criticize that way because they are intolerant of others who refuse to what they say "grow-up" or what is called conformity. My biggest burden were my folks but they eventually saw it made me happy and didn't affect me in anyway and left me alone. People will never understand however much you explain to them. I try to explain certain ways I perceive things and I usually get called weirdo or crazy or just people laugh, its fine. Then in a way it somehow discredits our ability to provide insight on anything life related.

josue Fuentes exactly but at times it would just get to me you know?Josh says it perfectly, people are agents of sociology. They can be agents of change or agents that repress certain change. People associate figure collecting with a lack of socializing and being very awkward and it's not true. But i hate how people like us not most but some of us have to hide it because our views, opinions, and values face certain degradation. It's almost being a herding dog for sheep, you do it right just differently but the sheep only speak and see one definitive way.

jajaja, i relate with your comment, i have friends on facebook that ...it seems to me not to have any interesting things to share but their stupid ugly selfies that i don´t care about, i like instead post pics of my barbie dolls, over time i not only collect them but i´ve learn to sew, repaint them, reroot their hair, even make my own dolls if i want, and i think that is a very profitable, and wonderful way to develop my skills, instead of becoming better on fixing my skin and my hair with apps to post fake pics of myself all the time...

My husband and I are 39 & 37 and we both still love to collect toys & figures! are not ashamed to walk into toy sections, go to toy fairs, flea markets, antique stores etc. We are both kids at heart and so is our 16 year old son. He loves the figures that we grew up with and cartoons too, like saber riders, mask, cops etc., We also have a toddler and thus the cycle will continue and carry on.

seriously, collecting toys are my anti-depressants.i collected lots of funko pops, gundam kits,ps4 collector statues, etc.and when someone says that it's too "CHILDISH"(says my cousin, some friends,my neighbor)i really don't bother.if collecting makes you happy so be it ,just be a responsible collector.Don't be a slave to other people's opinion.the best thing for me is when some visitors especially kids saw my entire collections, they be like "woooooooooahhhhh" and start pointing side by side, asking who is that, where did you buy that?,can i have that?and im a bit nervous because they might break things but luckily not.life is too short so enjoy and respect each others hobby

I'm in my 50's & STILL collect action figures & toys. I started in the early 70's with "Major Matt Mason" (a brilliant range of space toys & figures). I stopped collecting in my late teens due to University & the inevitable fear of what "others" might think of me (hence the sheep mentality today). It wasn't until the late 90's that action figure production improved & so did my interest in toys along with the realisation I didn't really care what people think I also went through bouts of selling/reducing my collection, which I would highly recommend. At my age I value my own joy in something MORE than the approval of others - it's a basic question that will weigh on all your life decisions. Do not use the approval of others as the driver for your existence (unless it's something harmful to your health of course). I enjoy toys but still have a professional job, normal relationships, a property portfolio, travel around the world and do all the adult things. In the past 5 years the huge improvements in articulation, sculpt & paint (God Bless face printing) of action figures makes them more art than toy. My collection brings me a LOT of joy - so KEEP COLLECTING ! (PS: I don't drink or take ANY substances either ... the money is better spent on a new SH Figuarts, Hasbro or MAFEX figure ! )

What a great video! And I can totally relate to this. Growing up I have always been a geek and a nerd. I was always into toy collecting, star wars, comics, video games, and all geek related stuff. And I was happy with it. I was still a complete geek when I graduated High School. But it all changed during my 20's. Being a geek I was always awkward with the girls. Whenever I met a girl I like, I don't know what to do or say. But then around my early 20's I started working out and try to dress differently. And I was quite shocked because lots and lots of girls would start flirting with me and try to get my attention. And I was loving it. My guy friends back then told me that I have to stop being a nerd and a geek because "Girls don't dig that" and that nerds are absolute "losers" in a girl's mind. And so I quit toy collecting and all the nerdy stuff and start hanging out at the club to try to meet as many girls as I can. But you know what, it didn't make me happy. And the worst part of it is I didn't even know that I wasn't happy. All it took was an event in my early 30's that made me realize "I'm the most happiest in my life when I was a geek". And so I started to return to my geeky self and it felt sooooooo good. I began toy collecting again, reading up on science, playing video games, and other geeky stuffs. Before I always hide the fact that I used to collect toys when I'm meeting a new girl. But now I always tell the women I met upfront that I collect toys. And it always gets interesting when they smile and ask "Can you show me your collection" 😂. And I have to say after embracing my nerdy self, I'm at the happiest point in my life right now. Sure some people still calls me a loser because I collect toys. But as long as I'm happy, then their opinion doesn't matter.

I remember as a kid I loved buying action figures. Whether they were cheap or not I didn't care I just wanted it. I had this big box of toys and everyday I would play with them and make stories. And all my friends thought it was really cool that I played with action figures. But one day my mom told me that I should give them away because I was in the 8th grade and what not. At first I really didn't want to because I love them so much but I ended up getting pressured to giving away my entire box because I didn't want to seem like a loser. So I gave them away and I didn't buy any toys for years. I would always see some when I went out shopping but I didn't want to be judged by everyone so I tried to ignore it. Fast forward years later. I'm 19, got a job and I'm back to buying action figures again. I don't worry as much as I did for what people would think. Somedays I do start to worry but seeing this gives me the courage to do what I want. So thanks for the video 😁

I recently started collecting anime figures, after a long time of having the toxic "that's so childish!" mindset. After picking a few figures from series I like, I saw how close-minded I was! Figures are nice to look at and liven up my space, and have gotten me though some rough times. Having a cute anime girl or superheroe to look at is no different than buying a sculpture for a living room, you have because it looks nice and makes you feel something!

YES! I’ve been bullied my whole life.I’m almost 30 & I still love wrestling. I have a wall dedicated in my bedroom to just wrestling posters. I also collect beanie baby boos in different sizes, stuffed gnomes, pop figures and other random stuff. I love stuffed animals.
I would like it noted that I am happily engaged to someone who also has his own collections/hobbies. Mainly video games. To my knowledge my collecting has never been a problem in my previous relationship. However, someone did break up with me once because all my cartoon character tattoos (little mermaid, power puff girls, princess castle, pop tart, Christmas lights, crayon etc) made them feel like they were dating someone with a child’s coloring book on their arms. Apparently that wasn’t acceptable to them...? Their loss, not mine.
I like to surround my home in stuff that make me happy. This is my safe & happy place. If someone has a problem with it, that’s their issue. I live here. I also suffer from depression & anxiety. I will admit surrounding myself with stuff that makes be happy, childish or not, really helps me mentally.
Keep being awesome. Don’t worry what others think. You just need to do you and keep marching forward. It’s your life!

Hey Josh, I just stumbled across your video on toy collecting. I'm 45 and really enjoy action figures. I'm often astounded by the judgement and attitude I get when people learn this about me. I don't understand why there's so much negativity behind it. I buy expensive ones when I'm able, but I never buy something I can't easily afford. I fit no stereotype....I'm a weightlifter that wears a cowboy hat and boots everywhere I go, but I also collect action figures and study Shakespeare. If someone comes over to my place and I was collecting shot glasses or knives, no one would think twice, but they come over to some Harley Quinn and Batman and it's like "that's a waste of money" or the what's-wrong-with-you look. The judgement does still bother me at times and makes me want to stick a new Batman figure in a drawer to hide it, but that reaction seems so stupid to me. What's wrong with enjoying something so simple that I view and appreciate like the art the artists intended it to be?

Life is short and life goes on. Collecting toys is as same as collecting stamps and books. There’s no shame to love toys because we both have the time love playing toys.
I have a friend loves playing barbie and now she got married! It’s not a reason should stop what we actually like to do in life! It is not the thing to measure if a person is mature or not. Mature is all about taking responsibility. If playing toys is immature, what about the people who bully their colleagues at their workplace? They are adults and properly love buying clothes and never wear it again too!

I'll be 20 here in the next couple of weeks and I just got back into figure collecting. I have collections of Neca Aliens and Predators and Just started collecting Castlevania figures. I don't think my parents have noticed yet because they are displayed in an area that's hard to see unless you walk in my room, so I haven't been made fun of for it yet. I also collect certain models, swords, and mainly books. (yeah I have too many hobbies.😅) and I think those are too distracting from noticing the figures. The only support I get is from only one of my friends. The rest of my other friends haven't seen much of the geeky side of me yet.
It's hard when you have family members look down on your hobbies and interests, but keep your head up high. If it bothers or concerns them it's their problem, not yours.

I think that it's cool you still collect toys and action figures. For me I collect comics, books, blu-rays and some lego sets and it doesn't really bother me too much if someone doesn't like me collecting it. Why? Because I'm pretty sure everyone does something other would call weird. Not nesscerry collecting things but doing and liking things as well. Everyone has that weird facination that other's wouldn't call normal but I respect anyone who can accept that others do it and admit they like something weird. Including me, I love collecting comics, books, blu-rays and lego and I'm not ashamed of it.

I’m 14 turning 15 soon and I collect marvel legends and Star Wars figures, and my parents think it’s a waste of money, none of my friends have the same interests as me which is totally fine, one of my best friends makes fun of me for collecting and liking Star Wars and marvel, and I could never tell her why I collect or like those things. I’d loved too but she’d laugh at me, when I was in a very lower space in my life, the only thing that got me out of it was marvel and Star Wars, collecting the figures I do makes me feel really connected and safe, but you know my dad had to say something today about me buying some figures and all I can think is, why did I spend my money on these, do I really need these?

Doesn’t matter, if your life is based around whether someone is a loser or not because of what they do, is superficial and kind of sad in itself, as long as your not hurting someone and any living thing, it’s in your private time and it’s your own comfort, not being funny you should be looking at yourself and why your making it your business if you think someone’s a loser for it. You really should, think about it, why are you making someone else’s interest your business in a negative way? That to me personally is very strange, I don’t think your a loser, that’s just hypercritical, but I mean the thought process is strange because you obviously have some issue around it. I used to let what people think get to me, and tbh sometimes I still do, but overall I've come to learn that if people want to judge me for collecting figures, then they can just get bent.
I feel like no matter what soneone collects, whether it be figures, shoes, vinyl records, even vehicles - they're all material objects that only have as much as value as you put into it. No matter how much you bought it for or what it is, it's just an object that has nothing more than sentimental value for you. I see someone who collects figures as no different than someone who collects shoes, or records whatever it may be.

This reminds me of an article I read recently: A kickboxer Twitted multiple times commenting and insulting anyone who liked cartoons and anime - mainly calling them losers and that women won't respect them, that he gets all the pretty ladies and they don't, etc. Of course, it lead to him getting bombarded with messages, both calling him out on his closed mindedness and proving him wrong. Little does he know that these people (who are richer and more successful than he'll ever be) are into anime: James Cameron, Quentin Tarantino, Samuel L. Jackson, John Cena (yes, THAT John Cena), Pherrell Williams, Keanu Reeves, Kanye West, Tobey Maguire, Christian Bale, Robbin Williams, Snoop Dog, Avril Lavigne, Meagan Fox, Hayley Williams (who even cosplayed on stage as Saya from Blood: The Last Vampire), Daft Punk, Dylan & Cole Sprouseand (The Suite Life of Zack & Cody stars), and Guillermo del Toro.
I only have one figurine, but my room is mostly filled with Gunpla (Gundam Plastic models). I'm not ashamed to have them - been building them since I was young. My parents said I was a loser for having, building and spending money on them. Little did they know, that it's better than spending my money on drugs, and that plastic models are a huge market and show one's creativity and crafting. If someone can't accept me for the fact that I have models in my room, and enjoy my hobby, they aren't worth my time.

Nothing wrong with owning nice things. They make for great decor. I don't understand stacking them on a shelf or putting them in an aquarium. Be creative. Put up backdrop displays. Use them as decorations. I also don't get people who collect a different version of the same thing over and over. I would be put off if I entered someones home and it was crowded with hello kitty toys, beanie babies, or my little pony figurines. Variety and moderation make a difference. Theres more to someone than owning stuff. Don't let it define you. When people think of toy collectors they don't exactly imagine hot attractive people. They imagine nerdy boys with crusty ball sacks who stay at home and jerk off to anime. You can be a cool person and still collect cool sh*t. Just don't give it a bad image and it'll change others perception of you.

As a fellow collector, I note that collecting may be a bit undermining in unhealthy doses.
It's not collecting that makes you a loser.
It's when collecting GETS IN THE WAY of your adult life and your real responsibilities.
If all your free time is dedicated to collecting INSTEAD of building a mature lifestyle (pursuiting a successful career, buying a car, buying/renting a house, getting a relationship/friends, start a family, developing bonds with those around you), then THAT's when you got a problem.
Because you lose the chance to live a life worth living. When collecting is your life, then your life is just full of plastic.

I have put my Eaglemoss lead figurine superhero collection in my law office as well as canvasses with pictures of my favourite 2000ad characters. I even made a life sized Tharg the Mighty. And to hell with anybody who thinks it is inappropriate. Life is too short to reduce your enjoyment of what you love.

    Dear Josh,
that's the first time I watch one of your videos. Does collecting toys make us such a kind of losers?
Thanks to my passion for Masters of the Universe action figures and Subbuteo Table Football Game (one of the most popular boardgames in Europe during the '80s) I found a way to recharge my mind and spirit after endless working days sometimes full of daily worries and responsibilities. I am over 40 years old, university professor and diplomat. I don't think to be a loser at all ;)
Keep positive and be proud of your passions,
    Vincenzo
