It was Denmark and Norway, not Sweden and Norway, that fell to the Nazis prior to the Nazi sweep through Holland, Belgium and France. Sweden remained neutral, supplying Germany with a lot of iron ore (in their defense, Swedish refusal to trade with Germany would likely have led to a German invasion of Sweden, and Sweden reduced and then eliminated these exports as Germany grew too weak to threaten Sweden, in 1943-4).
It's incredible that a documentary site can make such mistakes as naming Sweden as occupied. It was obviously Denmark and Norway ! Sweden managed to stay "neutral" by selling both axis and allies ball bearings and iron ore among other things.
They played both sides. A dangerous game(or would be if both sides wanted control of country). But also they played it pretty smart from the incredibly little I know of it. Sounds like they came out of it better off than most surrounding ne8gjbors who got involved warilarily
@@gobalmighty7463 Hopefully. I believe Denmark controlled Iceland, back then. Germany demanded all of Denmark's territories after Germany conquered Denmark, but they said nuts to that.
A few factors here set the stage for the future throughout the Cold War. America took over protection of Iceland, at their formal request, when the US was still neutral in World War II. Another interesting factor is that the Icelanders were told to treat the British and Americans (I am not clear on the "when and who" timeline) as guests. The Icelanders (and Faroese) are the culturally closest to their Norse roots and their hospitality to guests is all but a sacred thing. But rather than being the ones to have come ashore unasked, the Americans were welcomed. That has, with small exceptions, held true as the US has had a military presence since then. In point of fact, after 9/11, a group of Icelanders undertook training and were equipped to be able to offer even token, but symbolically important military support, to our forces in Afghanistan. This was momentous as Iceland has no standing military. It has largely been a mutually beneficial relationship. Whereas, they and Britain have fought a borderline war over fishing rights in the north Atlantic called the Cod War. So, for those calling America "imperialist"... put that in your pipe and smoke it. LOL
Yes, Sweden was never occupied and there were no German troops here. They did however request to use the Swedish railways to transport soldiers to Norway. A request that was granted, probably because they weren't really asking. The Swedish army was however watching them very closely and they were only allowed to transit through.
What in the name of reason is a clip showing children clearly standing right beside the Forth Railway Bridge in Scotland (0:10) doing in this documentary about Iceland????
Sweden's relationship with the Nazis was extremely difficult and complicated for more information about the relationship I can recommend Sweden the Nazis and communists by John Gilmore
Sweden is surprised, was unaware til this, awe-striking video, that they'd been invaded AND conquered by Germany. You've turned over a stone that wasn't there. Well done.
Sweden was not on the Axis side, however early in the war Sweden's neutrality was sometimes compromised by concessions to Germany to avoid invasion. Later in the war when it was not looking good for Germany Sweden started making concessions to the Allies. It reminds me of the Princess Bride where the hero was only mostly dead and they were able to coax him back to life. Sweden was at times mostly neutral and at other times not as neutral depending on what was prudent for it. This "Invasion" of Iceland was only mostly an invasion. I wish someone today would invade the United States the way that Iceland was invaded, where they got all kinds of infrastructure created, were kept safer than most of the western world and got richer during a time that the rest of the nations were getting poorer due to war expenses. Officially Iceland agreed to the "invasion", but this happened under immense pressure. So like princess bride but in war terms they were only mostly invaded. If you are only mostly invaded it is a lot better than when you are invaded, invaded.
Scary scene in 1940, Germany on the verge of victory. Americans and Russians were not in the war. If not for England things would be much different today.
I'm a yank & I often proudly wear a RAF ball cap - it helps start conversations in pubs about WWII. I often talk to young folks who know very little about the war & the key role the RAF played before the US entered the war. I'm also quick to tell them about the pilots from Poland and Czechoslovakia who were such heroic fighters in the Battle of Britain. I'm 76 now & regret that , when I was younger and surrounded by veterans, I didn't acknowledge them.
That pretty funny when you think of it. Britain invading Iceland but then complying with Icelands demand of only 3 foreign ships in the port at one time-some invasion that was! “Pardon us sirs, we’re here to invade. May we come ashore?’ 😀😀😀. I don’t know why Iceland refused Churchill’s request in the first place. Surely they understood by then that Germany didn’t care one bit about neutrality and it would be much better to be occupied by the Allies than the Nazis! The Icelanders must have gotten used to Brits n Americans being around because one of my friends mothers was brought back to the US as a war bride!
Question.....who do you think are the best and most real marines out of the royal marines and the united states marine corps. Im biased but i think united state marines. They have way more combat experience from time they created in the late 1700s
Another utterly incompetent video. Sweden did not fall to Nazi forces. It remained neutral and traded with Germany. However, Swedish volunteers were numerous in the SS.
You should do a video of the 3 day fire bombing of dresden from allied troops killing civilians. England and the USA war crimes. You can get that information from the documentary Europa The Last Battle.
The Victor's get to write history..... like what the allies did after malmedey (probably misspelled it), the rapes that happen in France , looting ,etc
Iron ore is in Norweg not in Sweeden and Denmark..yes Sweeden sold Iron ore and stay natural all these periods and never been attacked by Germ Nazi. Woo how bad your channel is.

Right. Don't know how he could mess that up so bad

This is simply DREADFUL. After having done so much good documentary work, how did this one get out the door?
"Sweden and Norway fell to NAZI forces" Oh, no! They got Sweden! Wait... no, they didn't.
Probably just meant Denmark.
@@gobalmighty7463 Hopefully. I believe Denmark controlled Iceland, back then. Germany demanded all of Denmark's territories after Germany conquered Denmark, but they said nuts to that.
"Attention! This is an invasion!"

Great stuff D D . Thank you for all that you do!
Waste our time?

Relating to cod war...has america ever been asked by Iceland to intervene/help a pal out? Against Britaini fishing ships?
As always , another great video!!!! ✌️🇺🇸
Without audio, it's not his video
Here is an obvious mistake. Sweden was neutral during the second world war, not occupied by Germany as claimed here,
It depends on how you define occupied. There were thousands of German troops in Sweden.
Germany used the railways to reach Norway, so no occupation.
@@JONNIE_ROCKER the Swedish were cowards.

So German was on Sweden railways only. Doesn't that count as occupying along railway/cars? So yes they occupied while rolling through
What's with the thumbnail? I don't think Iceland had Soviet officers inspecting a Cold War era missile silo when the Brits invaded
00:33 Sweden fell to Nazi forces? Are you sure about that?
Sweden was neutral and was never directly attacked, thus also never fell, to any nation.

Stormed transportation hubs in Iceland? "I say, good man, could you direct us to the railway station?"😊

Sweden fell to Nazi forces? Dude... you need to get your facts straight. 🤣It was Denmark.
Youre talkin about it now...bout time someone brought this up to talk about
a "barely trained" battalion of royal marines is not something to sneeze at

Yes great video, but please do your fact checking better Sweden was not invaded by any country during the war.

Sweden fell?
My understanding is that Sweden was neutral.
Sweden did not fail. Please correct this erorr.
Yep…Sweden was neutral during the war. Friendly towards Germany for trade but neutral and unoccupied none the less.
It never said Hitler invaded Sweden. Just that he was interested in Swedens iron ore deposits.
I dont think Hitler invaded anything did he? But nazi soldiers under rule did?
At the beginning it said Sweden fell
Another utterly incompetent video. Sweden did not fall to Nazi forces. It remained neutral and traded with Germany. However, Swedish volunteers were numerous in the SS.
Why didn't Ukraine think of that, passing laws to limit the speed of invasion.
Sweden did not fall. Sweden was neutral! .Sweden help allies. Get the history right
WTF is this video, how could you get such an important historical fact wrong? (see other comments about Sweden in WW2)
The background music was not soft enough.... it seemed to be louder than the narrator.
Denmark and Norway, not Sweden
Hey if you could stop mis-telling history that'd be great!
SWEDEN was never invaded!!
Wow this channel went from okay to being fact checked all the time. I guess it's about time people knew something unless this is a test
They needed the American versions of these in Los Angeles a long time ago. But they didn't look DEI enough.
Better research next time, please😊 Sweden wasn't occupied during WW2, but neutral. I'm Danish, btw.
And eating danish does not make your statement accurate. Sweeden gave Germany anything they wanted under the guise of neutrality.
Excellent lecture, very disturbed by massive background noise. It is unnecessary as the topic and the presentation are exciting enough👍👍👍
