Looking back, Yamcha was actually a bit of a trendsetter for the Earth cast. There were a few things that we take for granted in Z, but the fact Yamcha is often the first one to come up with them is sadly overshadowed by the Ls he'd take immediately afterwards.
Seeing Yamcha beat Goku all them years ago was the main reason I became a dragon ball fan. Even when DBZ happened and Yamcha… You know, I had been since fell in love with that show. Still love it today.
Some talk about how Yamcha became a joke and I am convinced these people just never watched the Pilaf arc. Dude was always a clown who very occasionally got a minor dub. Goku chose 17- a guy he literally just met, and Freeza- his arch-nemesis and murderer of his parents over him for the TOP for a reason.
Yeah, and that reason is because the DBS writers were hacks. Yamcha was no more a joke character than anyone else in early Dragon Ball, because early Dragon Ball in general was much more comedic and parody-based. As the series became more serious, however, so did Yamcha. Yamcha was always meant to be a genuinely strong and capable fighter, crippled only by bad luck. He always made it to the semi-finals of the tournaments, and even when he lost, his opponents gave him props. He received training from Roshi, Kami, and King Kai. Was at the frontlines against numerous world-ending threats. His peers respected him as a warrior. Super had an opportunity to actually give him more meaningful involvement, but instead chose the low-hanging fruit of canonizing the memes.
Yamcha really peaked in Dragon Ball up until Tien rocked his socks in the Tenkaichi Budokai. Even in the Saiyan Saga, he was pathetic, and it's funny but sad when, alongside Krillin and Tien, he's still VERY strong for an ordinary human.
