There’s an old game Cossacks 2: Napoleonic Wars that’s like early 2000’s strategy that if you could get it working you’d probably enjoy. You do have a manual fire button in the game where you can either set to auto and the unit will fire once in range or you can choose when to fire with 3 damage Zones. Units have morale, there’s cannons and rockets, cavalry, light troops. It was one of my favourite games as a kids and I’ve still got the CD’s somewhere. I’d love to see a retro play of it but god knows how you’d get it going.

*unit name suggestion* light infantry: Louisiana’s rifles
Napoleon sold Louisiana to the USA and many French troops returned to serve in napoleons conquests there were groups made up of men from the Louisiana territories that served as pathfinders in Russia mainly but also served in Egypt.

Letter from Gisèle Faure to his parents in Paris
    Mes chers parents
Once more I find myself drawn to battle by our great General Napoleon, I know that Mother still angers over me leaving instead of settling down and wedding Lady Adèle Fabre. However, I would be a fool for not answering the call to battle but my Napoleon and my old dragoon regiment. I understand the wish to have your eldest son carry on the legacy of the family name, however, I have come to learn I am not made for prime proper and posse settings, I am made for battle and the front of a charge so that is where I have gone off too.
The journey here was extremely eventful, we managed to slip passed an English fleet and take Alexander, and from there we sent a small flanking force out to test the enemy's metal. Frankly, the battle left us wondering if that was truly an enemy force or just some peasants in a revolt we stumbled across.
We the heat and sand here water is worth its weight in gold, the demand for it is what will dictate our maneuvers and movement. In fact, to aid in this regard some of our light cavalry have swapped horses for camels, a comical sight to see, to be honest however they sit much higher up and can see the battle even better than I can from a horse. Personally, if it wasn't for the smell, the awkward way they run, and the fact they're not a horse. I wouldn't be opposed to such a mount if asked to. Regardless we have begun our march on Cairo this week.
I am now writing to you after the first major battle, we struck an actual enemy army outside a city whose name I could never pronounce properly so frankly I have given up on trying. The battle opened up with the enemy maneuvering a limbered 9-pounder gun towards a hill commanding the view over the center of our line. Naturally, we could not allow this to happen so we spurred our mounts and drove at the cannons before they could unlimber. What happened next clearly was a case of miscommunication on the enemy commander's part. The enemy skirmisher rushed forward and began to deploy stakes to prevent a calvary charge, however, they deployed them behind their own cannon effectively cutting off its only route of escape from my charging dragoons. Thus they were trapped and we fell upon them, destroying their pieces and killing the gunners before escaping clean. The first charge of the campaign and not a single man lost to enemy fire, a wonder to be held and likely something I doubt will ever repeat itself. With their guns silent it was now our cannon's time to shatter their will to fight.
Napoleon didn't wait while we took action, he drove the whole line forward to get our cannons set up in good positions. From there he ordered our light cavalry to flank the enemy and to pepper them with shot. This effort was so effective the enemy skirmishers pulled their stakes up from the center and put them down on the flank. From there the enemy charged at us with their calvary, forcing our line infantry into squares. I must admit a moment of alarm when I saw enemy infantry following their calvary, however for the majority of the line was able to repel the calvary change and reform line seeing off the enemy infantry, our third battery of 6-pounders was caught out by the enemy infantry and caught up in a melee. Near by line infantry ended up seeing their plight and drove the enemy away. From there it was simply a clean-up operation for our forces. On the whole, the dragoons came away from this fight with only 3 wounded, all hit by spend rounds so they will be back in the line soon.
After liberating the city we didn't rest and celebrate this victory, instead, we rallied our forces, treated the wounded, and pressed forward to Cairo. We have marched all the way to the outskirts of Cairo, and while I finish writing this letter I can already hear sounds of skirmishing. We had a unit of light cavalry sent ahead to scout the enemy's defenses however it sounds like they have started a general engagement. I hope to write to you all once this battle is complete.
    Ton fils fidèle

    Hello Mr LH, Sir,
Excellent to see Napoleon in Egypt!
Well done with the start up battles, I enjoy the fire and movement of your Infantry, use of terrain and Cavalry exploits to knock out your enemies Artillery right from the start! Most excellent indeed.
I fear that your garrisons behind your lines are too weak?
If Nelson desides to land on the coast with the Ottamans everything you have will be in Cairo and that will mean a double back to push them back.
Also as time will pass and the Egyptian resentment will increase you must leave suitable garrisons behind, unfortunatley, to deal with the unrest. This is a strange and land of 40 or 50 centuries very unlike Euroupe in most ways, especially religion!
Even Ceasar had to leave a legion in Alexandria to secure his rear and administration of supply.
Love this content and I hope you feel better soon!
Always odd hearing about french exploits from someone with an English accent! Amusing!
    Glory to France and Napoleon!
Love this content and keep it coming!

Account of the standard bearer of the 2nd Grenadier Regiment Henri Louis Allard: 8th Échalote Messidor Year 5 ( June 26th, 1798 in revolutionary calendar)
We arrived with General Bonapart in Egypt on the first of Messidor and immediately disembarked outside Alexandria, an ancient and glorious city! The city fell to us after a brief battle with the garrison, my regiment was first ashore and won great honour as Napolens vanguard! I will never forget the praise the General gave us in his dispatches for the week all shall know the glory of the 2nd Grenadier regiment!
A week after we had taken Alexandrain the army had already marched out to our next inevitable conquest, a few of the men had been complaining about the heat but most were in good spirits. Especially the men who have served with the general since Italy, we know he will deliver us the same riches and glory we won then! We are approaching the city of Malhalla Al-Kubra where I'm told the general plans to assault the city without delay. I can't wait to fight the Saracens and show them what the fighting men of the 2nd Grenadier can do!
June 25th Day of the battle
The day was miserable. A blowing sandstorm kicked in right as we started to array ourselves for battle, the men whispered that the sand was a cover, a trick by our damnable foes but the whispers were quickly silenced by those of us who have fought in Italy. We have faith that General Bonapart will deliver us to great victory today. Already the sands are starting to clear, and I see victory.
General Bonapart stationed me and my regiment on the right flank of the battle, what an honour it was to guard the foot cannon! No mere unit of fusiliers could be entrusted with such a vital task, the general shows such faith in our regiment and the men are eager to show him he couldn't have picked better men! Riders came and gave out our dispatches, the general had ordered us forward and to extend our line for combat, I raised my standard and began the march. minutes tick by, the men have idle chatter, the sun glaring down on us, sand kicked up by our brief march is now carried by the wind and is blown back into our faces, and then the cannons roar to life. BOOM! the battery fire deafens me for a split second as the flash of the cannon and the shot comes racing out. My eyes follow it and see it hit its mark, a poor band of peasants is torn apart by the round shot as it goes through the densely packed mass of men, I almost feel sorry for them. Almost.
Another messenger comes, new dispatches to reform ourselves, hopefully, soon we shall be committed to the fight, anything is better than cooking in this heat. Our rivals in the 1st Grenadier regiment beat us to combat this day, no doubt we shall hear no end of those braggarts and how they are the General's favorite, we will show them who is the General's best regiment of grenadiers, and quickly wipe the smirk off their faces.
    *CRACK*
The whole front rank delivers a volley at the foolish Saracen general who dared to test the resolve of the 2nd regiment of grenadiers, no doubt planning on pushing onto the battery, such suicidal bravery is to be commended but against us all attacks are suicide. Glory to the 2nd regiment of Grenadiers! Glory to France! Glory to the republic! And glory to General Bonapart! The day is ours and not a single loss of man! A few are down to heat stroke but we are at full strength and ready to show our worth to General Bonapart!
The day ends, and by my count, we took down nearly 160 of the " feared" Mamaluks, clearly, they are nothing compared to us Frenchmen.
By mid-afternoon, we were parading through the streets of Mahalla Al-Kubra and as an elite unit of the army we were given an honoured position near the head of the procession, though, to our great disappointment, the lead of the troop was given to the 1st regiment of grenadiers. The men are grumbling that losing men to a band of peasants is such a great disgrace to the army that they should be removed altogether. Being near General Bonapart was mesmerizing, so much so that I nearly forgot he was directing his praise to his aides to the 1st regiment of grenadiers, his way with words and genius will surely lead to great things when we are back from this expedition, General Bonapart is destined to great things in the republic, and I will fight with him, the regiment, and the army to the end of my days. Vive France!
    Signed,
    Henri Louis Allard
    2nd regiment of Grenideirs

That took a while to write, let me know what you guys think, I know that there isn't a standard bearer in the game, but I like the idea of writing as one. But if anyone has better ideas/ thoughts on any of this let me know. I plan on doing this for all the Napoleon battles and the character will just move between regiments when necessary ( loyal to the 2nd In heart forever) Hope you guys enjoy the journey we will go on

Just a suggestion if you want to take Cyprus, the best plan is to bait Nelson with one fleet, while you move another fleet carrying an army around him and land at cyprus. Although I dont recall if Nelsons fleet disappears after you take Cyprus, but considering what happened with Sardinia in the Italian campaign, it should be fine.

Napoleonic naval factoid: at the time of Napoleon's Egyptian campaign, the Océan-class ships of the line were the largest and most modern warships ever built, outclassing even the Spanish Santisima Trinidad and dwarfing HMS Victory.
Extremely popular ships, a few were eventually equipped with steam engines and remained in service well into the 1860s.
Unfortunately this didn't help the most famous member of the class, the French flagship Orient, whose cataclysmic explosion at the Battle of the Nile marked the beginning of the end of Napoleon's Egyptian ambitions.
Also, the French did not, in fact, bombard the pyramids. ¬_¬

Is it that once the square is breached the cav has no where to go but a death alley? What is the benifit vs notmal line volleys?

    • @thomashazlewood4658
      @thomashazlewood4658 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Horses will resist moving into an obstruction that they can see, so, a formed square is as good as a wall to horses. Consequently, cavalry wind up coming close, firing pistols, and trying to force their horses into the infantry. In addition to firing musketry, infantry wielding bayonets offer a defense much like that of a phalanx. Within the square there will usually be a reserve of some kind to rebuke any cavalry that might force an entry.
Typical squares have artillery at the corners of the square and will be firing at point blank range. The infantry are not really as thinly spread as in the game. They would be 3-5 men deep and capable of putting out continuous fire. Historically, there was only one recorded instance of cavalry breaking a formed square.
Infantry merely standing in line, once broken through, are subject to both flank and rear attacks by the cavalry, hence, very vulnerable.
