"Most Ready When the Nation is Least Ready" Gen Mattis at MCA Chicago Dinner

- At the 2022 MCA Chicago Professional Dinner and Wounded Warrior Leadership Awards presentation at Solider Field on Friday, 29 July, Gen James N. Mattis gave his remarks about the future of the Marine Corps by taking a deep dive through history to provide context.
From being scattered across the Navy on ships to assaulting trenches in WWI, and following the evolution of warfare, Mattis states the case of the National Defense Strategy he spearheaded that has guided the creation of Force Design 2030. He notes that "[Marines have] adapted repeatedly to be the most ready when the nation is least ready."
Looking at the rise of autocratic aggression from Russia and China, especially as it relates to Ukraine, Mattis states the need for a modern, capable US Marine Corps.
I was shot in the chest - body armor and luck saved me - in Baghdad in '06 by a Sunni sniper. He was caught three weeks later, and he wasn't a religious fanatic. When interrogated, he said the same - "You are foreign Soldiers, and you don't belong in my country." I can respect that too, even though he damned near killed me. After 9 years of writing letters, the interpreter who served with me in Kunar, AFG finally escaped at the 11th hour from Kabul with his wife and children. He served alongside us for years, risked his life in firefights, braved murder threats, family members turning against him, and a myriad of other hazards, just for the chance to come here.
Where is Gen. James N. Mattis now a days? Yes, he is an American treasure

Mattis may not call himself an outstanding Marine, but when I listen to him speak, I feel like the malaise and confusion of this world weakens and is replaced by a spirit of rationality, competence, and integrity.
He can instill the necessary mindset to keep people sharp and their head in the game, the hallmark of a true leader.
I think it's a credit to the Marines that his caliber is mediocre. I think the overall nature of our military is a tremendous synergy of normal, everyday people with a love of their family and community. They achieve something as a team that would be impossible as an individual. And yet it is the individual sacrafice and suffering that enables the team to achieve so much.
Contrasted against the Russian army where they could take their best and feed it into a system of corruption and it destroys them and achieves as a team that the individuals could have achieved on their own.
