Man... It seems to really produce all the complexity of the mechanical noise in a really pleasant way. Stringy sounding. Wiry, but in the best way. Nothing harsh, yet miles away from blurry.
I don't begrudge the manufacturers the price at all. I find it weird how some musicians get so angry when something's expensive. I don't think most of them have an understanding about profit margins and how manufacturers arrive at their prices. If something is expensive in the gear world, it's usually because it costs a lot to make. It's not like anyone has a monopoly on tube amps that allows them to drive up the price artificially. If there was a way to do something like this cheaply, Behringer would have done it. If you think it's overpriced, don't buy it. No one is holding a gun to your head. At any rate, this seems like the kind of amp that could be considered a legendary piece of gear down the road. It sounds incredible. It looks incredible. It doesn't weigh 100 pounds. It has some modern conveniences like the post-power amplifier DI out. I wish I could own one, and I wish it didn't cost €6000 plus import fees. But I'm not angry at the manufacturer for making something that costs that much. That's a ridiculous attitude to have, imo.
His Ampeg B25B came out in the 60's and SVT in late 60's. Ampegs and other tube amps of that vintage have heavy output transformers and it was made back in the day when people did not endlessly whine about how heavy their amps or basses were.
I bought the Ampeg Scrambler Overdrive pedal. It contains the overdrive circuit from the newer Ampeg bass amps and provides a nice degree of crunch into ANY clean amp/PA system. A great bass tone doesn't have to cost thousands
@@daviddesmond2143 I feel like if you want the HEAVY THICK MEAN bass, those are still the way to go. If you can get your hands on a Peavey Classic 400, though... man those sound heavy as GOD.
It seems like a perfect clean tube amplifier, ideal for recording and, by weight, for live performance. Expensive? Less than a collection of guitars, you only play one at a time. And a decent full range speaker should suffice.
Sounds awesome, but couldn't imagine anyone gigging it to take advantage of all that power. My small(ish) valve head (Ashdown CTM 30) sounds great, but I wouldn't want to gig it, despite being surprisingly loud through good speakers. My Class D head isn't as nice, but the added poke makes it perfect for gigging
Yeah, because that's how much it costs to make a boutique amp with high end components. I promise you they aren't making it unobtainable just for fun. I'm sure they'd love it if they could sell it for $1000 and move 100 times as many units.
Wow, sounds excellent! Does it distrort or it stays clean no matter what the gain setting is? If it doesn't that's a minus for the tube amp players i guess... Imagine paying 4700 euros only to put a 100 euro overdrive in front... And if you're a touring player and need a backup amp and cabinet you need 12.400 euros for heads and cabinets 😂😂😂 anyway! It's good these things exist in the market i guess...
Of course, the amp can distort. The preamp has enough gain to bring even the quietest J-bass to life. The parametric active tube tone control (we know of no other bass amp with such an EQ) helps. The working point is also set for 'creamy' distortion.
Moving anything tube related isn't fun. I recall helping a buddy move his Mesa guitar half stack and Marshall combo. I thought we were moving a small planet not a guitar rig.
I wonder what's the market for those boutique amps. With modelers being this good these days I would think studios and dentists? Not many working musicians would be carrying this around. Also, it sounds like a very nice clean A/B class amp, kind of like EBS stuff.
@@flipper2gv Not that I'd buy one, but this is the cost of a small production, designed and built with high quality components, without the use of underpaid 3rd world labor or materials. Sorry if it sounds like I'm getting political, that's just the reality
All the tone in the world can't save bad songwriting and a world overrun by generic posers of the leetest variety. But I'm glad it looks and sounds like it should be important. Have fun with virtual reality gang.
Your dad is pretty good at bass
That joke has run its course
@swiftymcgarnagle4567 I still like it though 😂😂😂

I'm stunned too ! What a tone !
€4700 (head) + €1290 (cab)
Is that all?? I'll get eight - one for each bedroom!
Thank you for posting this
I mean, he did same upfront that it was very expensive. And he explained why.
Might be a cheap/reasonable/expensive for what it is. It was just that the video was lacking this specific info.
😳
Frank hits me with his rhythm stick.
No power transformer, it uses a SMPS so thats why it weights less than a conventional tube power amplifier.
Hopefully this is a wake up call for more companies to use SMPS power for their tube amps (COUGH COUGH AMPEG)

Gosh man i want one
More info on the Taranaki bass please! Is that referencing Taranaki in New Zealand?
Taranaki is the brand but they never really picked up. Only 5 were ever made, only 1 fretless
2:10 song please?
I am wondering if the amp can sound like an aggressive SVT or is it every time smooth like a superbassman.

Great review and fantastic playing as always by Frank!
What‘s the name of the mic, if i may ask?
Rode NTK
I had the MM HD130 it was very heavy .....i dont really miss it .
Gawd than Yamaha bass is nice!!!
But the best kept secret is it's price..... My guess is 10K??
4700 euro for just the amp..
@@Oscaraha
@@Oscaraha and almost 1300 € for each cabinet. If you wanna put up a full rig (amp head, 2x10 and 1x15) you'd ring up a 7300 € bill. 😱😅

I'm not even sure a dentist could afford this. Nearly 5k euro just for the head.

I hope there are still some musicians out there that can see the value of a proper amp over modelers

A really great device, but let's not talk about the price... otherwise I'll start crying
Very nice but the price makes it studio gear.

KT88s are a smart choice.

What ever happened to Taranaki Basses?
They never really picked up only 5 exist. Mine is the only fretless
What brand was that fretless? Did Gregor say “Taranaki”? I’d be grateful for any clarification😊
