Teddy Roosevelt is credited with creating the united states forest service, 150 national forests, 51 federal bird reserves, 4 national game preserves, 5 national parks, and 18 national monuments It's because of him people have public land to be able to hunt, camp, off road and just enjoy the outdoors in.
Well this episode had it all. Coffee drinkin', whisk(e)y sippin', stories of an influential President, high blood pressure readings, brides and bridesmaids, and shoutouts to us who served. Well done.
Love this video! When I saw it in my feed I was surprised because TR wasn't a drinker but then saw the giant jug of coffee and smiled. I majored in history and interned at the Theodore Roosevelt Association in Long Island during undergrad. They describe him perfectly, like a cartoon character come to life. If they talked about all the interesting TR stories the video would have been hours long. A few of my favorite stories about him I learned while an intern and visiting his home in Oyster Bay, NY. While he was president, he had a boxing match in the white house and received such a sever hit he lost sight in one eye. He also learned judo while president. TR kept up his hiking as president and would often take foreign dignitaries with him, there is a story on one occasion while hiking with an ambassador they reached a river and TR stripped down and swam across the river. The ambassador, basically being forced to follow does the same but keeps his white gloves on, when TR sees him on the other side of the river naked like him except for the white gloves he asks the ambassador why he kept his gloves on and the ambassador responded something to the effect of, in case they ran across any women as they continued it would be improper to great them without his gloves. A few little add-ons I always found interesting to the stories they shared. One of the treatments for asthma when TR was a kid was smoking, so his father would take him on fast open carriage rides in NYC as a kid while TR was smoking a cigar to try force air into his lungs and treat his asthma. TR's father helped found the American Natural History Museum in NYC and not only did TR provide so many specimens as mentioned but he learned taxidermy starting around 11 or 12 years old and preserved a good portion of those specimens he shot himself. The bullet he was shot with stayed in his chest for the rest of his life. It had cracked a rib and the bullet's location made it too risky to remove.
“Your sense of self becomes tiny.” I loved that remark. It rings very true to me when I’m out alone in the wilderness. It is an extremely freeing feeling.
Admittedly, this was not taken in the way you're supposed to, i.e. relaxed for at least 5 minutes, but I do strongly recommend getting it checked as well. Have been there (far worse, actually) so have come to know what long term blood pressure issues can lead to. Prevent it now while you have a chance. No shame in it.
I mean, he's filming a video and randomly getting a blood pressure check after walking (don't know what speed) to the vehicle. I doubt he's relaxed... There's no way that's his resting blood pressure. Plus he was standing. Sure he should get it checked just in case, but I'm sure he's already on that
The story about the heart murmur reminds me of an old, old joke. A cop goes to the doctor, who tells him he has to stop eating donuts. If he stops, he will add five years to his life span. So the cop says to the doctor, "What I'm hearing is, I can go without a donut for five years, or I can eat donuts until the day I die."
The Churchill episode with Andrew Heaton was the single best video y'all have ever done--hilarity, history, and hooch fused into a masterpiece. I've replayed that one and shared with others. This one is a close second - I was so hyped to see him return!
Roosevelt had a tremendous capacity to challenge and even reinvent himself, though that became more difficult as time wore on. He was a true renaissance man. ACTION! When things seem insurmountable and I'm feeling low I think of TR and get to it. Action!
Teddy is the real true last American. He did it all. Rancher to sherif in the wild west hunted down criminals in Indian territory he even fought Indians. He was a rough rider to scientist to governor of NYS and created the police academy. He did it all. He was tough and hard headed. The definition of what a true American was. A trail blazer! Also I bet teddy had cowboy coffee not just coffee we have today. It’s made differently
also coming here to say this, your diastolic is REALLY high, you need to see a doc and get that under control ASAP, catch it early and its super easy and cheap to deal with.
A gallon of coffee is 128 ounces. An average coffee cup is 10 ounces. That's 12-13 cups of coffee. I used to drink 10 large cups a day. Teddy is my kind of man.
There was a point not so long ago that I would have called those lightweight numbers, but I had to cut back some, because that habit gets really expensive when you really like good single-origin coffees... And sleep is a valuable thing.
High West makes great whiskey, The campfire is good for cocktails but it's a little too smoky for my taste, but the Double Rye is always in my house and the Rendezvous is really really good for a nicer pour, very complex and spicy!
Teddy was 58 when the US entered WW1. It took a presidential order to keep him from going over to Europe and fighting. That means in an alternate time line we could have had two time medal of honor recipient Dan Daly charging across no man's land along with Teddy Roosevelt.
All of the Rough Riders were supposed to be on horseback during the Cuba campaign since they were a cavalry unit. However when they went to embark their ships in Florida for the journey there wasn't room for all the horses. So only the officers were allowed to keep their mounts which is also a big reason TR rode up the hill the day of that battle. Great episode highlighting a lot of the stories of one of the biggest personalities America has ever known.
I'm an Australian, we don't do freedom units, so I didn't really have much context for a "gallon of coffee", so I looked it up. For anyone else confused, it's 3.7 litres.
Damn you REALLY have to push this podcast more! It is a really wonderful idea, and as you said indeed a great conversation starter that I will most definitely use with my friends!
I already liked and respected Teddy, this episode taught me a lot more about him and made me like and respect him even more. Any lesser or normal person would've died of caffeine overdose from that much coffee.
This guy seriously reminds me of Tim Blake Nelson. Like not just his looks but like his mannerisms, his speech, his intonation. We got ourselves a doppelganger y'all!
I usually like to describe Roosevelt as "A man who knew that Americans needed someone worth looking up to". He lived during a very rough time in American history and had a very high expectation for what a good man was. His public persona was both an exaggeration of his real personality and, partly, who he wished to be remembered as. He relied on his sisters and his wife for moral support and wrote to them very frequently, confiding in them about his self-doubts.
roosevelt is such an interesting character. i dont agree with everything he did, but he did have a tremendous impact, and in many areas a positive one as well. plus his tenacity is something to admire. definitely my favourite president

Roosevelt is an inheritor if a long tradition of heavy coffee drinkers. Kant was purported to drink 12-16 cups a day, and to read and write prodigiously. Look it up, and a lot people in the pasr drank astonishing amounts of coffee...
I like the part where the guy who shot Teddy was crazy and claimed the ghost of Teddy's predecessor told him to do it. And that Teddy refused to get the bullet removed once he got to a hospital, because his predecessor died from complications when they removed a bullet he was shot with.
I wasn't expecting the episode I got but you best believe I enjoyed it greatly. That was awesome!! You guys would love talking history with the Fat electrician.

There's a wonderful book by Richard Zacks called "Island of Vice: Theodore Roosevelt's Quest to Clean up Sin-Loving New York", which explains the normative nature of his times Populism. Rex's initial blood pressure of 147/99 is actually concerning. He should get it checked again and speak with a medical professional
I came here to say this. That's pretty high, especially the /99.
