I feel your pain Ben! I ran the 5k too. I ser a lofty ambition to get a sub-20 (previous PB 21:07) and I used your 5k training plan which I loved. Great news is that I ran on pace and was given an ‘adjusted time’ of 19:52 but obviously gutted that it counts for nothing!! Particularly with so few races to give it another go. I didn’t know the course was short till I crossed the line in 18:12 and then immediately knew it was wrong! So frustrating! Love the training plans though (on the marathon one now!) really work for me and great value for £6! Keep up the great work!
Can only imagine how frustrating that must have been to realise that the course would come up short - hard to keep pushing on. I'm running my first half marathon race at Dorney Lake this Saturday so really hoping that course is accurate! Congratulations on 70k subscribers!

Inaccurate courses is one of my pet peeves for road races. Trails it’s understandable but when you’re measuring across bitumen it’s very doable to meet the basic standards. Keep progressing, you’re comeback from injury has been impressive
Love the vid! With regards to the rant though: keep in mind that during official measuring of a certified course, the shortest possible route that can be taken is exactly the race distance. So if it is possible to cut a corner, the corner will be cut for the measurement (it's up to the organisation to prevent corner cutting when unwanted). This also means that you will always run a longer distance than the distance of the race. The same holds for example for a 400m track: the outer edge of the inside line is exactly 400m, so the runner will always run slightly longer. Ofcourse for a 10K your GPS should not reach values like 10.5K during good wheater conditions and an open terrain. However, a good GPS watch can have a 1% error during optimal conditions, which can result in a 10.1K run for a 10K course. During suboptimal conditions (bad weather, bits of forrest, large buildings, etc) this error can be increased by a lot!
I'm a huge motorsport fan and wanted to run Goodwood earlier this year before "the thing" happened. Glad to know it's going ahead again, I'll keep an eye out for the next one!

Sorry - I know this is an old video but i had a relatable story - the first year I did london triathlon they said in the race briefing, one short loop, one long loop on the bike, if you do it the wrong way around you will be disqualified. During the race the turnaround point was blocked off by tape. No marshalls around. No one knew what to do. Some pushed through. I went to the next point I could turn around and did the short loop plus some extra and then my long loop. Added 4km to the bike leg. And of course, in the results, lots did the short loop first, lots did the long loop first. It didn't matter, everyone was in the results.
I love seeing the views of London as I work there, but not been to the office since March. I often got the Uber boat or run along the pathway from the Globe to my flat in Royal Wharf (via Greenwich foot tunnel) miss the City. Great content 👍🏃🏻♂️
Wow, Ben what a frustrating race for you. I've heard many good things about run through events and suppose this could happen to any race promoter. It sounds like such a simple thing to measure a course properly and it amazes me when people get such a fundamental thing wrong. What's the proper etiquette for blokes with running leggings, shorts over the top of them or not? or maybe underwear underneath (not for comfort but just to keep the boys in the barracks!) well done on getting to 70k subs
Ha.. always a difficult issue. Personally I don’t wear tights.. I’d call what I’m wearing here running trousers.. they are baggy enough not to worry about being on show. I just had some longer length running underwear underneath. So if you wear tights it’s got to be better to wear shorts as well!
I always write to organisers when a distance is off by considerable margins (happens regularly, luckily not with HM and M) especially when everyone else also experienced that.
In line with when they race cars at Goodwood, where everyone in attendance dresses up like it’s the early 1950s, you had no excuse not to show up at the 5K in full Roger Bannister cosplay.
Haha.. I go to revival most years, usually dress up! It’s such a lovely day out!! I’ll have to try and run a mile in his shoes on a cinder track one day!
@@RobManser77 Put Roger Banister in state-of the-art Nikes on a new track and he would have run 3 or 4 seconds quicker than 3.59.4. Plus he only ever trained in his lunch hour.
Another good one Ben 👍, you are keeping the quality good. Shame about the 5k, there was some similar races (that I missed) at Oulton Park recently, would you recommend these runs on a racing car circuit then? My running is improving slowly and I am trying for consistency to stay injury free and kick on. No races in the plan at the moment apart from my first Marathon in London next October 😬
In 2020 the motor racing circuits certainly make Covid regulations easier for event organisers and allowed some events to happen that otherwise wouldn’t have gone ahead. But give me a traditional closed roads race run any day!! See you at London next year!
My first ever half marathon a few years back came up short (Brighton)...was interesting as mine and my partners Garmins both came up short on the day and when they wrote to us and admitted the issue (was 2 years in a row if I remember correctly) we weren't totally surprised...was annoying though as officially my first half wasn't actually a half Marathon!!
you all prolly dont give a shit but does anyone know a way to log back into an instagram account?? I stupidly lost the login password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me.
All races cancelled around my area but I'm happy I was able to have two short races in August and road marathon and 35K trail in October. I feel I would like to do 5K, 5mile or 10K time trial before Christmas but weather isn't serving for best as -3C° just today ☺️
Bummer. Is it common for races to be longer than they say they will be? Did Auckland, NZ marathon recently and distance came out to be 42.5km so I didn't quite reach my goal time
So Anoying about the 5k, hope the 10k goes more to plan! My training is going well, week 8/18 for the marathon plan for my first one. virtual marathon in feb then the real deal (touch wood) in October for Brighton!
Still salty about a race from 2010 where we were turned around prematurely. Worst part was RD’s response to my complaint. She said that we should have known the course and turned around at the proper spot! This was on a trail in a valley by the way so nothing but trees and path and even if I did know the turn around spot was I supposed to barrel past the volunteer screaming at us to turn around?!? Ooof thanks for bringing back this memory!
Heyy Ben. Nice video. I will do my 10k Race this Weekend on my Treadmill becaus i need to do one for the Zwift Academy Tri. Never done a Race indoor so i hope for the best and a ~42ish finish. Kepp Getting it done!!
Is it one particular company that gets the Dorney Lake distance wrong? I've seen that mutliple companies use the venue, i wonder if they its always the same course. I had my eye on Dorney for a HM PB but now i am rethinking.
This remind me of my 7.4km (4.6m) Parkrun. I was out on my own in the lead and TWO marshals sent me the wrong way. Eventually found my way over the finish line in 38th, not that I'm bitter or anything. I'm definitely over it; my therapist tells me so.
Interesting about the course marking. I’ve only done about 4 or 5 races ever (it took me years to get the confidence to enter one) and have had that happen to me twice 😮. Only one organiser apologised and neither refunded me. The last one was gutting as they deliberately added a 400 metre loop at the last minute to make it Covid compliant and they admitted this to us all afterwards. On Strava everyone was about 10.38 to 10.42km. My goal was my first ever sub 40min 10k, but I got just over 40 minutes because of the extra 400 metres! I wonder if they realise what a faff periodisation and tapering is, or whether they think we all just run the race as we would a normal daily run?
Do you not warm up after a mile or so? I still only wear a t shirt and shorts and a pair of gloves anything around 0 Celsius as I warm up soon into the run. I’d sweat buckets if I wore all the layers you have on!
Do you have any advice for following your training plans in colder climates? I have no trouble holding specific paces on clear ground, but am worried about being able to do so safely as the trails get more slippery. How can I tell if I’m putting in an equivalent effort while slowing a bit for safety?
Mine are trashed after 190kms, as I wore them on a really muddy canal path (the white ones!) Can’t seem to get them gleaming properly yet, but deffo not worth putting them in washing machine! It can affect the glue
Great shoe choice, @Ben Parkes! Wearing my mango Tempo Next% on long runs, too. My trail runs has lots of uphill: 4:40-4:45 pace over 17k. You doubling this is impressive!
Agreed on inaccurately measured courses. I did a 10k last year where I knew it measured short bases on previous year results. I went into it with the mentality that I was going to keep running past the finish until I got actual 10k. Super annoying still.
RunThrough have been exceptional this year in providing a safe race environment where, let’s be fair, most other race organizers have failed. One of which was an elitist organizer (who also organized a race Ben recently raced at) who resorted to name calling of participants of another race just because they lost their license. Look at it this way... you’ve just got yourself a shiny new 4.59k PB. Winner.
My local area has only just started UberEats at a few selected chains, and you’re getting on an UberBoat 😂 gotta’ love London! 🇬🇧 Winter training going well so far, lost approx. 1 stone in weight and signed up for the Lakeland Lapland Virtual Festive Ultra Half Trek which runs from 12th-22nd December - the aim is to complete 89 miles in 12 days 👊🏻🏃🏻♂️
Courses not measured correctly - ugh! Manchester marathon was 26.56 miles. Other runners were coming in at 26.75. I know marathon can be over distance but that added at least 3 mins to my time which would have given me a marathon PB by 2 seconds :-) Had the same issue with Robin Hood Half which was 13.40 miles - way over distance for a half. When I emailed them they told me they knew and were sorting it for next year!
Hey Ben, love your channel and appreciate your frustration, but do you think you're putting a little too much stock in a GPS reading? Even if the reading is perfect on and out-and-back course, it's probably going to come up 10.1k, so only takes a few turns here and there to throw it out a bit more. RACE the other competitors and let the time take care of itself. Or do a track 10,000m if it's really bugging you?
9.9 or 10.1is fine with me.. I’d never question that. but the races I saw were all 500+ meters out.. which is too much! I’d always be the first to say to others run the course and not your watch, but the watches are pretty accurate these days and when everyone who runs gets that inaccurate reading you have to question it. It now seems there were a couple of dodgy courses and the organiser has rectified it now.. but all the races I found were from when they’d set up the course wrong.. frustrating for those who ran it!
Man, great videos. Would never knock them but is there anyway you can do something about the volume of the music you use. Nothing wrong with the music. For some reason you just get blasted by it 😂😂
The gps/race distance thing is always annoying. We have a local 10k that has a windy path through the bush so it always comes up short on the gps. According to the organisers it has been measured using a digital measuring wheel. It’s just one of those things. I still claim it as a 10k pb but I’m not sure if I should...
The weird thing is that the Goodwood 5k (well, 4.6k) had a bike .... why?? I did the 10k, we didn’t have a bike. Neither did the other distances as far as I know!
They usually have it simply to lead the front runners out.. as most people just follow the person in front of them.. but the faster runners don’t always know where to go. Can’t say 100% that the other distances had a bike, but I’d expect they did!
@@BenParkes I did the 10k and we didn’t. Plus it’s not the most complicated course going round the goodwood racetrack! We had a couple of guys at the turning point directing us round the cones.
@@josephgonzalez_ cool! The other reason could have been the 5k runners would likely be significantly quicker than others out there.. so the bike can be used to warn runners faster people are approaching / clear a path and keep everyone safe.
Funny to see Bens rant about course distances. Recently did the Brighton Marathon that wasn't measured correctly and not only did it make BBC news! They also had to go back and change the winner to the person that was ahead at 26.2 but not at the end 26.7 As someone whose come to Running via Triathlon, believe me, it's appalling there! Don't think I ever ran a correct distance. And a well known German Iron Distance course is deliberately short so they can claim "record times"
In Spain the problem isn't so much inacurately measured courses but, outside the big cities, no one really cares if their course is 5k or 10k. So you get to run accurately measured 9.6ks or 5.3ks. Strange.
Ugh, hate the worth way after countless marathon miles on it in the past. The footpath that you stopped at early on is a much nicer path, very lumpy and takes you out to worth Abbey. Also, the worth way actually starts at three bridges train station, not the church where you started (not that you missed much). After east Grinstead you can take the forest way which goes on and on to Tunbridge wells. That's much of a sameness as the worth way (flat and boring).
Could you measure your own course somewhere? Or do it on a track? I guess you want the official race to make it an official PB and race conditions etc.
You really cannot trust GPS on race distances. I've been involved with two parkruns where the course has been measured by wheel and GPS measurements vary wildly. Particularly true on courses with u turns and lots of twists and turns. Some races do get it wrong but far less often than the GPS does.
Like watch ing you rs run and the ladyas well idong more miles 13miles going to do more each week training for london marathon next year oct 221 i do your walk ups as well
I can understand the frustration of an incorrectly marked course for sure. However, consider that this year is so challenging and race organizers and volunteers are no doubt stressed and overworked... and concerned about their own health and safety being around a bunch of people at a race. There is so much human suffering going on at this time that I find it hard to complain about anything.
It's okay to complain/be frustrated about something that affects you. Doesn't diminish what other people are feeling and experiencing, or mean that you don't care.

So if you wear tights it’s got to be better to wear shorts as well!
i live close, use that place for running
I always write to organisers when a distance is off by considerable margins (happens regularly, luckily not with HM and M) especially when everyone else also experienced that.
Living in Sweden, that comment about "Swedish winter" really hit home lol. Been running in basically compact darkness since October!
Awesome video! Hopefully we can visit London again soon. 🙏🤟
Creepy Crawley 😆 - I used to go to school there a catching the school bus from Horsham and that’s what I called it .
@@BenParkes That’d be a great video! I’ve often wondered how much harder it must have been for him in those shoes on that surface.
The welsh runner was racing 10k there as well
I am pretty sure he was at Castle Combe race circuit Diederik ....quite similar though 👍
I've run many runs either being short, or long.. it is annoying. People are proud to get PRs and it's shorted 500m or more...
Well done! It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who wants McDonald’s after a run haha!
you all prolly dont give a shit but does anyone know a way to log back into an instagram account??
I stupidly lost the login password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me.
@Casen Brixton Instablaster ;)
Had a half marathon trail that measured 13.72mi on my Fenix 5. As you say, the GPS could be off some - but a 1/2 mile!!
Did Auckland, NZ marathon recently and distance came out to be 42.5km so I didn't quite reach my goal time
Once again another banger Ben! Lovely to meet you at Goodwood on Sunday!
When your "easy 5K" is way better than my 5k PB ahah so strong man ;9
Heyy Ben. Nice video. I will do my 10k Race this Weekend on my Treadmill becaus i need to do one for the Zwift Academy Tri. Never done a Race indoor so i hope for the best and a ~42ish finish. Kepp Getting it done!!
Wishing you all the best Thorsten. Come back and let me know how you get on!! You’ll smash it!! 🙌🙌
Is it one particular company that gets the Dorney Lake distance wrong? I've seen that mutliple companies use the venue, i wonder if they its always the same course. I had my eye on Dorney for a HM PB but now i am rethinking.
I’ve entered the race organiser race.. and the screenshots were from their event there in September. Will email them tomorrow and ask!
For me it would rather be summer miles for winter smiles 😅. Jeez I hate running in over 20°C
Can’t believe you use your tempos on the trails 😂😂👌👌🔥🔥 hope you get another 5k race in soon 🤞🏻
Ha, they scrub up ok afterwards!!
@@BenParkes I wash my tempo next %’s in the washing machine on a 30 wash every 100 mile or so. Come out looking brand new. 👍
Winner.
I ran my first marathon at Good Wood on sunday. I knew somthing felt off that day lol
My local area has only just started UberEats at a few selected chains, and you’re getting on an UberBoat 😂 gotta’ love London! 🇬🇧
Winter training going well so far, lost approx. 1 stone in weight and signed up for the Lakeland Lapland Virtual Festive Ultra Half Trek which runs from 12th-22nd December - the aim is to complete 89 miles in 12 days 👊🏻🏃🏻♂️
Good luck Steven!! Great goal to pace yourself through 🙌
Courses not measured correctly - ugh!
@@BenParkes fair call. 500m is too far. Good luck with whichever one you end up doing!
You're hands must of been roasting in them prisims gloves lol 🙌🥵
Man, great videos. Would never knock them but is there anyway you can do something about the volume of the music you use. Nothing wrong with the music. For some reason you just get blasted by it 😂😂
Ben I think if you lengthen your strides it'll be 2x faster
The gps/race distance thing is always annoying. We have a local 10k that has a windy path through the bush so it always comes up short on the gps. According to the organisers it has been measured using a digital measuring wheel. It’s just one of those things. I still claim it as a 10k pb but I’m not sure if I should...
Why would you move from London ? And where are you thinking of moving?
They also had to go back and change the winner to the person that was ahead at 26.2 but not at the end 26.7
As someone whose come to Running via Triathlon, believe me, it's appalling there!
Strange.
How bizarre!!
You sound like Murray Walker fella 😄👌🏻
Ugh, hate the worth way after countless marathon miles on it in the past. The footpath that you stopped at early on is a much nicer path, very lumpy and takes you out to worth Abbey.
Also, the worth way actually starts at three bridges train station, not the church where you started (not that you missed much). After east Grinstead you can take the forest way which goes on and on to Tunbridge wells. That's much of a sameness as the worth way (flat and boring).
Could you measure your own course somewhere? Or do it on a track? I guess you want the official race to make it an official PB and race conditions etc.
I can confirm how cold it is at the moment in the UK 🥶🥶🥶
Well done on the long run 👍🏼
Very nice outfit! What do you wear when it gets cold? 😉😂
You really cannot trust GPS on race distances. I've been involved with two parkruns where the course has been measured by wheel and GPS measurements vary wildly. Particularly true on courses with u turns and lots of twists and turns. Some races do get it wrong but far less often than the GPS does.
Like watch ing you rs run and the ladyas well idong more miles 13miles going to do more each week training for london marathon next year oct 221 i do your walk ups as well
70k Long Run soon, Ben 🤔🏃🏿♀️
👍👍👍👍👍
I can understand the frustration of an incorrectly marked course for sure. However, consider that this year is so challenging and race organizers and volunteers are no doubt stressed and overworked... and concerned about their own health and safety being around a bunch of people at a race. There is so much human suffering going on at this time that I find it hard to complain about anything.
It's okay to complain/be frustrated about something that affects you. Doesn't diminish what other people are feeling and experiencing, or mean that you don't care.
Double gloves when it's only 2°c ! Come on Ben !
I had the same thought 😀 I am still in shorts !
But... I can run happily at 35-45 degrees, when everyone else melts.. have always struggled to keep warm in the winter though, running or not!
@@BenParkes Fair enough. I like both cold and hot. Variety is the spice of running
Ran my first ever half marathon this weekend! Went well, but it was tough because I had never ran the 13.1 distance. If you want to see it check out the link th-cam.com/video/aF83v67YtpU/w-d-xo.html
Uber boat, not a submarine, how disappointing.
