    I've been using volume pedals since the late 70's and wouldn't want to play a gig without at least one. I usually use 2. One before time based effects and one at the beginning. Sometimes I'll put a tuner before the one at the beginning so I can tune silently. Cheers guys, good informative video.

    I will certainly never look at volume pedals the same way! Who new they could be so versatile?
    As always, the guys in these videos are obviously having so much fun and that´s a great thing to see.

    That G2 really makes it easy to demo the placement of the pedal! Only in the last year did I finally learn about placing the volume pedal in the middle of my chain, and it made all the difference in the world! This video clearly demonstrated what it took me umpteen years to finally learn! And OMG what tone coming from those amps!!!

    I also have been using volume pedals since I saw Buddy Emmons use a Sho-Bud back in the early 70's. I used two. One in the front and one at the end. The one in the front gets great pedal steel effects and the one in the end works great to control the overall volume without having to get up and turn the amp down. Even though I mostly use my AxeFx III in the house now (I'm old and retired from playing gigs) I still have my Hilton volume pedal which uses RF to change the volume. It's got some controls on the underside to be able to adjust a lot of the parameters. This is the best active pedal I've ever used. It actually makes your guitar sound better.

    You can put the volume pedal in the FX loop (if the amp has one) before or after you FX. That way you don't change the gain structure of the preamp.

    Can you do a video with each of your personal pedal boards, explaining why each pedal is there and what that pedal beat out for its place on your respective board. Also, your personal amps used for giggin and overall whole set up?

      In my opinion the one at the very end is useless except for a kill switch... when would you want to adjust your overall volume and have an unnatural jerk in the time based stuff? Wouldn't you just use that position for a killswitch? Before and after overdrive definitely.

      Perhaps you missed it, but they mentioned that you can change the virtual position of the volume pedal with the Gigrig. It's not the same as having two physical pedals but it can be a solution.

    Thanks! I placed mine first in the chain and realized that the compressor after the volume pedal reduced the ability to swell. The pedal was either all or nothing. Will put it just before the amp input, and let all the modulation stuff happen in the loop afterwards. Great demo, fellows!

    Fantastic, thank you very much for this. For me, the best option is putting it in somewhere in "the middle" (after dirt/before modulation effects), and using the volume knob on the guitar to control the amount of juice going into the dirt pedal.

    I'm a male lead guitar, and lead vocals. I have a passive volume I use at the end of my chain, right after my boost actually. I feel I can control things a lot better, sometimes It's just I don't turn my dirt off and it's easier to use it as a kill switch of sorts. But I can switch off my dirt pretty fast and have my delay trails keep going. It sounds pretty good, I have people asking me a lot how I get my tone especially since the amp I'm using is a Fender 68 custom twin, one of the reissues, where they went with the tweed bassman tone stack in the custom channel, which I use with Mids turned almost all the way up, and the bright switched turned on. But I am really trying all sorts of things. Right now all I use is a lovepedal superlead, a fulltone ocd, and a blackout effectors musket fuzz, for dirt! For the three delays, the catalinbread bella epoch, the echorec and the Mallecko ekko 616, I have a wah, standard vox. , the boost which is a fulltone 2b and the ernie ball volume. I actually would like to get the G2 at one point to control all this. I love your products. Anyway very informative video!

    Well done gents, settled it for me, I want volume control without compromising the drive or distortion tone..... My pedal will go either after the drives before mods or at the end of everything...... I will no longer put the volume pedal at the beginning as like you said I have a volume knob on my guitar if I want to roll back the tone, I don't need to repeat that at the beginning of my chain...... I have getting it wrong a long time!! Thanks again for all the very helpful videos!

    I put my volume pedal before gain, because I like to be able to get a gradual progression from clean(er) to chunk (in a build-up to a chorus, for example). But I keep the volume pedal after my EHX B9 (Organ Machine), which won't engage without a certain threshold level of input signal. This also lets me set the global organ level, which is handy. Anyway, great video!

    Hey Guys, Thanks for all the great info! I have a mini Blackstar fly that I rigged up, and the tone is the best I ever heard in my life! From any rig. I put a little tube Pre-Amp on it 12au7 I think. Vintage Mullard tube...since I lost volume ( from the pre, or the OD pedal, or both together? not even sure). I added a mini Mosky Vol pedal to the mini "Trouble" Overdrive pedal I chained in...I'm just learning how to manipulate amp tones...I think I got really lucky here! lol. It's now pretty loud, and too loud to play it with ought bugging people near me. I got a tiny "passive" attenuator for this rig. If I heard you correctly...I should chain the Att. box after my Overdrive & Vol Pedal effects? As I'm thinking do I now have 2-volume devices kind of? The Blackstar Fly has no EFX loop in/out per se. I guess I could go in to the 1/8" "line in/mp3" too? maybe? Just put a 1'4" adapter blah blah, but that gets to be too much rigging if I can just chain it after the EFX pedals. Could you PLEASE tell me the best way to rig up this little attenuator for what I have going on here? I'm actually going to mic this rig when I record, and even play out! The tone is that amazing...I play heavy stuff. Thanks a million! Rock!

    Very well played. Great explanation and demonstration as to how & where the placement of a volume pedal matters. It's clear that it is a personal call, but there is a distinct difference. I think I would prefer mine at the beginning of the chain, though I can clearly see why one might want it at the end, or better yet to have it set up the way you do so that I could alternate between the two. Thank you very much.

    Guys, how the heck did you get the mic'd guitar sound to be so huge. This sounds amazing. I have a great amp and cab, cranked to good levels, good pedalboard, and I feel like my mic'd sound(as heard on stage through in-ears) is never this big(as I hear it through a computer and headphones). It may just be perception. This guitar sounds huge. Looks like stereo signal, 2 amps and 2 mics? Any room mics also mixed in there?

      There are another kind of pedals that control voltage. Those are exp pedals and can control anything the pedals allows it to (delay time, fq in a eq, delay reapets, oscillator speed, tremolo speed...) Volume pedal is volume pedal

    Would be cool if in upcoming stuff you show using both volume knob on guitar and volume pedal in position 1 and when you go for what. Obviously fuzz would be controlled by guitar, but so would your base sound even when the fuzz isn't on since the volume knob changes the way a guitar behaves. Trying the Telonics and Lehle, hopefully going to be able to try the Telonics pro because both of these pedals change the sound due to the active circuitry. I got the Telonics standard which rolls off bottom end and really high frequencies, and it just sounds like it lacks guts... that's why I'm going to try to do the pro model. I have done blind tests with people, hoping to get all 3 of them together and put them in the switcher and go through lehle, telonics, telonics pro, and dry. They both have really really nice sweeps.

    • @TheGigRigDaniel
      @TheGigRigDaniel  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jordan Dedo thanks Jordan. If you can find a transparent passive volume that doesn't load your signal then Id say go passive, but most do unfortunately, but if they're going after a buffered pedal then the buffer will drive the volume pedal and you won't have any issues. Theres no substitute for getting your hands dirty and trying out a bunch. They all have their own feel. Cheers mate

    Got some questions, guys! :
    I´m on negotiations on having a Boss FV-300L. My intention is to put it just after the gain as you said, but in my chain I like to have a chorus. So... Did i put the pedal before or after the chorus?
    And there´s a fourth use. I´ve borrowed my brother´s Schaller FV-121 and put it on the FX loop of my amp ( a monster plenty of watts ) for playing at home without having riots with the neighbours. Learned that trick from Mr. Brian Wampler.
    Thanks for what you´re doing. Your channel rocks, and it´s the ultimate source for learning how to use gear properly!

    I love this show, theres always something good I learn in every episode. To be clear though, a passive volume pedal after OD and before delays will retain the high end frequencies? Also, at the front end, would an active VP affect fuzz negatively? And yes! That JHS thru the two amps is glorious. Mmmm. Thanks so much!

      brian patrick HI Brian. A passive volume pedal after an ENGAGED OD will retain the top end, but if its in the middle of a true bypass series of pedals can suck your tone. An active pedal into germanium fuzz can cause issues as well. Hope that helps

      Stratomacaster i've got also an OC-10. Putted the Volume in the middle (after the overdrives and before time fx), so it's primarily for swelling time fx. The gain structure can than be influenced by the guitar vol. pot.

    • @Stratomacaster
      @Stratomacaster 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robert Bossart Good point. Then you have two volume options at once. Of course I really can't complain too terribly much. It's a pretty simple task to physically move the volume with a pedal loop already. It's not like you'd have to re-wire the input and outputs directly on the pedals.
      Cheers.

    Thanks for the great video guys. I have a question though, I have a Cali76 Compressor which is usually at the very front of my signal chain as to my experience comp pedals work best when they see see input guitar signal before anything else. Now the main question is, If I have an active volume pedal, which one should be first? Imagine I want to change the gain level as well as the volume so putting the VP at first is a must, then how about the comp pedal? Is it a trade off at the end of the day?
    What is the best way of managing the comp and VP?

    • @thumbpickfingers
      @thumbpickfingers 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +konnektlive If you want to get the same compression level no matter where you set your volume pedal, put the compressor before the VP. If you want to be able to change the amount of compression, put the compressor after the VP. This way, if you turn the VP down, you will reach a point when the signal will get little compression or no longer be compressed at all, depending on your comp. settings.

    Interesting. How do I use a both a volume Pedal and have my delay and reverb in the effects loop of my amp if both these setups use the Volume Insert Send and Return on the G2.

    So am I wrong in understanding that both volumes pedals AND expression pedals are essentially foot operated potentiometers? And if I am correct, why can't a volume pedal (assuming it has the right jacks and cables for the job) function perfectly well as an expression pedal?

    • @TheGigRigDaniel
      @TheGigRigDaniel  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s possible but for an expression pedal you really want a lower resistance, around 10k. For a volume pedal your want as high as possible. Hi impedance volume pedals are usually 500k. Lower values work for buffered signals

    I have a question I'm hoping you guys could give me an answer to; does an active volume pedal work as a buffer when you simply have it on? I'm about to build a new pedalboard and I'm gonna get a buffer for it, but I kinda feel like I should get/need a second buffer for the effects loop. If an active volume pedal works as a buffer then that solves my problems but I'm not sure that's the case. Great videos by the way :)

    how does volume pedal impedance affect the placement? can we just place volume pedals anywhere we want regardless of the impedance? thanks!

    Great demo, so if you have a G2 or similar and can move the volume pedal before, middle and end do you need a low impedance or high impedance pedal? Active or passive?

    Where to place the volume pedal if I just want to regulate the volume, and not the amount of gain in solos?

    very helpful ... but also probably means i should have bought an active volume pedal instead of a passive one ...

      What to do if you would like to use the volume pedal at the end of the chain (=volume insert on gigrig G2) but also like to work with the effects loop on an amp by using that same "volume insert"? Nice video btw.

    • @brianingram2068
      @brianingram2068 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What about using G2's volume insert as you do now (Effects Loop interface), while putting your volume pedal in one of G2's loops (1-10) instead of some other pedal in that loop? Then use G2's ability to program the position of the Volume Insert at some point other than at the end. Final step would be using the new software's ability to place the loops in any order to position your volume pedal's loop in the order you want with your setup.
      I don't have a G2, so you might need to email TheGigRig to verify this plan.

    Most of those [very few] times where I'd want a volume before the drive I could get away with wrapping my pinky around the volume knob, allowing me to put the pedal at one of the other places. That would probably cover everything I want.

    it would have been nice to hear using the pedal for attack suppression, Like EVH Cathedral or opening of Xanadu/La Villa Strangiato- I would assume this is front-of-chain placement so ping-pong delay (Cathedral) stays intact....was hoping to see difference of active/passive in that regard.

    Would you get sound changes if you had your volume pedal after the overdrive but your power amp sections were also compressing? You would essentially be removing some of the signal from the overdrive pedal into your compressing amp right?

    I'm going to try running a stereo rig soon, and run a volume pedal in the fx loop of each amp. And maybe another one on some stage of the pedal board.
    Is this a good idea? What type would be suitable at each stage?

    I need a volume pedal for swells, after drive pedals and before delay. I'm using it with a Telecaster standard and a valve amp..so which kind of volume pedal for this job, 25k or 250k?

  • @hchoe741

    so for a passive volume pedal placed after an always on compressor, but before overdrives, is a 25k pot value better? or 250k?

      250k if you have active pickups is the rule of thumb I was told...

    Been setting up a huge board for myself that I'm using a QMX with... been facing this question lately as I figure out which volume pedal if any to use... with an active volume pedal after the compressor but before dirt and with fuzz before all ... when do you use your volume knob vs volume pedal? Obviously knob for fuzz, and can use the knob to manipulate compressor. Is it just kind of a journey of moods as to which you reach for when?

  • @TheVigilantStewards
    @TheVigilantStewards 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Only thing about putting an active pickup in the beginning is fuzzes, treble boosters, and other germanium stuff right? Do you just set the G2 to push the volume pedal after those effects when active? I haven't ever seen you guys do a video on Lehle vs Boss vs Analogman buffered boss 500h pedal.... pretty sure I've seen the Vertex boost make an appearance though? I can't say that I've seen every video but I've seen most of them more than once :) No overdrives get mad at the active?
