The sad thing is that this trend happens to nearly every popular series. People just tend to speak negativ about popular series just to trigger others or caus they are mad that there favorites do not get the same amount of credits. I mean why can't u just let other guys enjoy what they like even if u think its shit. Thats probably one of the biggest issues i have with ani manga community in general.

lol if berserk was given a proper anime adaptation it would be better than game of thrones easily especially when you take into consideration season 7-8 which lowers the series to a 7-10 for me. I don't see any genres being inspired by got....

I love Berserk and im far from emo haha it's amazing art and what grips me is it's the same story being told from beginning it's not stretched out or just reused material like a lot of others do for filler.

Why don't you consider The Black Swordsman Arc good??

    • @WalkingTheShelf
      @WalkingTheShelf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I mean every single aspect of berserk is at it's weakest in the black swordsman arc. Not only that but I just think comparing prologue arcs, Berserk just has one of the weaker openings if that makes sense.

    • @tyranaconda6381
      @tyranaconda6381 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

if you ignore the character moments or the little bits of inner personalities of Guts, you would view it as a low rated compared to the prologues or what comes after Black swordsman arc.
But Black Swordsman arc offered enough detail as an introduction of the story and it's ending is the best place to start telling the prologue story. At least for me.

@@WalkingTheShelf I think the Black Swordsman arc gets better as more context is revealed through the Golden Age arc. I think it's why some people nowadays start with Golden Age and then go back to the Black Swordsman arc.

Didn/t need social media to puke several times while reading that "masterpiece"
I read the beguinning in the beginning of 00s and was shocked by the fact someone was really spending his time to draw this.
Well was told it becomes better. So I bought 7 volumes, read them. Well it bocome somehow better, but still too inconsistent and gory for no reason. Battle scenes are well drawn, but hard to follow and have a horrible direction.
But then Miura found a dictionary and the word RAPE was found. Ok, cool. Rape can be in you story as a plotpoint... but... Miura didn't portray rape for the sake of trauma for his characters. He just liked those scenes. He liked to draw them in a very pornografic manner, for wierdos. Yeap I get it - Casca is being raped, lets move to another plotpoint. Oh, no we should not? We should have several pages of this dumb wierdo fantasy?
Every time there was rape and gory killings it captivated the author and he made chapters and chapters of bullsh*t. The story is really stupid and filled with filler arcs.
The plot is all over the place, the humor is in the places where it should not even exist. Characters are forgettable, plottwists are unpredictable in a very bad way (author never had a plan, he was just trying to be ... what was the word... edgy.).
Yes, the trauma part could be great in an other story, and with characters who the reader may be interested in. But here even good qualities make that story irredeamable.
There are a lot of great seinen stories even in the dark fantasy genre. Berserk is not one of them. The only good thing there is occasionally fine designs and sometimes good panels.

Your comment just comes off at best purely spiteful, and at worst delusional. I’m not saying you have to enjoy the series but at least try come up with valid criticisms. That would hold up a lot better than shallow attacks on Miura’s character as a person.

      @@WalkingTheShelf there were none.
there was a criticism for Miura as a creator. Maybe the fact that English is not my native language
There is a problem with mangas that are written for so many years. When you write a book you can write a chapter or two in a day, and the amount of time spent on the whole series would be like 2-3 years. It is easier to correct yourself or to rewrite the part of a story before the book is published, and in the time span of 2-3 years you would not be able to get that much older to rethink all your values and the purpose of the story you make.
Clearly Berserk shows a big problem with a lack of vision behind it. Miura had one idea of it when he was in his early twenties, then he had another ideas how to move forward and try to interpretatate the work already done in his forties. The story was never written and planned from start to finish.
And yeap, we all grow older and some of us are getting wiser. It surely was a case with him. But he was stuck with that mess of a story he made in the beginning with all it angsty sh*t.
No personal hate for Miura. He was an art genius, but not a very great director and writer trapped in the format that didn't suit his artistic needs (to make a million precise ink strokes per panel) and a story he dreamed as a teen.
Many other authers like Araki made great leaps in their mastering of writing craft, like Araki, by ending a bad story to start anew, trying to make it so much better. By inventing new ways to tell a story.
He should just kill of guts somwere around the arc with the tower and a fake eclipse and start a new story with new characters.
And I'm not sayng Araki's better then Miura, don't get me wrong. I'm comparing the way they work on their craft. One of the, tried to make everything equally better with each step, and the other just worked on his art game, forgetting that too many full spreads kill the pacing and the effect they should make.
You like what you like. Your video is your point of view, and my comment is just me ranting about the thing I tried to love so much, but was geniunely insulted by its content and wrighting quallity.
No negativity towards you and the author of Berserk. I'm too very dissapointed the man never had to finish the work of his life, and passed so early.
      RIP Miura.
But the passing of the author cannot stop attempts to critique his work.
Sorry if my first comment my have been rude. I’m not saying you have to enjoy the comment section of your channel but at least try come up with valid criticisms. That would hold up a lot better than shallow attacks on my character as a person.

The only thing that holds berserk back from being the best manga of all time is it’s handling of rape and sexual assault.
I wish that there were actual videos online critiquing this aspect about berserk and it’s author, but to me, the fan base lets it slide and not have a serious discussion about this.
A story can have a revenge plot, grey morality, a dark fantasy setting without the use of sexual assault being displayed in full grueling detail. Take the Witcher for example that is very similar to berserk, it has all the gore and morally gray characters and in Witcher there is rape- however, it is said rather than shown.
Griffith could have just sacrificed the band of the hawk, Casca could actually be strong and independent like she originally was before becoming some rag doll that’s at constant risk of being raped, and in chapter 180-190 when Guts finds Casca, (after she was raped which is no surprise,) she gets assaulted by him which narratively makes no sense whatsoever.
had he not been snapped out of it, nearly rapes Casca himself- the scene could have merely been guts struggling to kill Casca or not since it becomes apparently obvious that she was growing to be a bit of a burden. This is what we call character assassination.
    “Guts is an antihero”
    “It’s a seinen manga”
Antiheroes are not meant to be idolized, but there is something about them that is heroic or noble that keeps us as an audience invested. Take Arthur Morgan and John Marston from the red dead series who by no means are great people, but aren’t completely terrible men either- especially when one actively tries to do good before his time is up and the other being a reformed gang member just trying to save his family.(and they didn’t nearly rape anyone.) Guts before the assault had these qualities.
And a Seinen allows for dark themes to be explored and illustrated but people simply forget that some topics have to be handled with sensitivity. Just because SA and rape comes with a “territory” does not mean you should draw it ever. This extends to other series in manga that have sexual assault for no reason and are again just shock value.
TLDR; Berserk should be critiqued more for its handling of such a topic rather than it purely being praised for being more than blood and guts because it honestly is but the SA muddies it

I mean not liking it is fine and all but you're not going to sway anyone with this way of thinking. You're not really arguing that the SA could've been handled better, you're just saying it shouldn't be shown at all. That's just too closed minded for most people to even give your take a chance of even being heard.

Berserk is overrated fantasy. I just see this as poorly written story that doesn't make any sense. Miura doesn't care about story after Golden age arc, he just wanted money. He never ever gonna be finishing Berserk, because its was his bread and butter. So yes, another flat series with dead end.
