  • An easy way to breathe life into an older video card is to change out the old thermal paste. It will instantly lower your temperatures, diminish fan noise, alleviate thermal throttling and even give you overclocking headroom. Take care of your graphics card and it will take care of you! I used Noctua NT-H2 on GPU. Affiliate link below!

      I've repaste my GPU using MX-4, it is now about 22°C more cooler... (from 96°C down to 70ish°C fully stressed).
      the old paste just seems too dry, like, leaving too much micro space for air.
      What matter is, what is your previous paste?
      how long it has been there?
      What the best paste for GPU (i.e most durable performance, not the inital performance)
      Is Arctic Silver can hold it's permance more longer, as it sounds like more metallic material?

      Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Extreme is the best commercially available thermal paste for GPUs due to its very high viscosity and thermal transfer metic. Put it on my 7900xtx that had relatively fresh factory paste and my temps dropped 19 degrees! And the delta from hotspot reduced from 24 to 14. A massive win! The 7900XTX hotspot is an issue and this fixed it.

    A GPU cooling tip I've found to be useful aside from ALWAYS replacing the stock thermal paste (because it's the cheapest crap out there) is to replace the stock thermal pads with higher quality ones. Or add pads to things like a cards VRM's and RAM chips so they can dump their heat into the heatsink.
    I saw with a GT 1030 that I have in a HTPC, that the heatsink covered the RAM chips, yet didn't have anything bridging the gap to cool them. I didn't take software temperature measurements, but under load those things were solar flare hot. After taking a couple minutes to apply some thermal pads, so they could dissipate their heat into the heatsink, it consequently dropped their load temperatures down by probably 50+%. Was genuinely amazed how much such a simple thing helped.
    I think people forget just how hot those RAM chips get and how the hotter they get, especially if overclocked, the more they thermally throttle, which effects GPU performance. Plus most decent thermal pads, especially the ones that come in big sheets where you can cut many pads out of, are dirt cheap. So it's worth taking a minute to see if you can bridge some gaps with thermal pads over VRM's or RAM chips or simply replacing the stock ones with better quality ones. The card will run cooler and live longer because of it.
    Ironically few, if ANYONE, seems to be mentioning this. So hopefully it helps someone out there.

      RAM chips can operate up to 95-105 degrees without any problems. They will last the lifetime of the card. People are worried about temperatures like 85 degrees, but that's not really a problem. You are far more likely to damage a video card by overvolting, than having an inadequate heatsink

    With my 3.5 yr old EVGA GTX 1060 was idling around 65 C and when playing non GPU intensive games like CS-Go I'd be throttling a lot and I'd be getting a lot of stuttering and frame dips which made me lose a lot of duels...
    When I dismantled the card the stock thermal paste was pretty much dead ! Very little of it was left between the die and the heat sink !
    Having applied new thermal paste, I'm now idling around 35-40 C and cruising around 70-75 when gaming ! ... That's almost a 30 degree difference in Idling ! It is insane !!!
    I'm never gonna thank you enough !

    Always a good thing to do after you have Tha card for some time
    Don’t worry about the sticker ... they are not allowed to void the warranty for removing the heatsink (or simply clean the sticker completely off)
    Most company’s just use this to see if you removed the heatsink if the card would come in for an rma
    Also let the company know if you ever replaced the thermal past or use a gpu block ... most company’s should not make a big deal out of it (specially if there are gpu blocks that are specifically made for that card)

    I had a similar outcome as yours as well, my reference GTX 1080 was running loud and hot though blower style coolers are known to have high temps but the thermals I had were unusually high averaging at 87-89C and max temps reaching 91C when gaming, by then the card would severely downclock to just a mere 1600+mhz and fan speeds screaming at 90-100%. So I disassembled it, cleaned out the dust that was built up inside and to my surprise, the thermal paste had dried out, it was just depressing to look at, similar to yours but mine was super thin since the gpu die was quite visible, I then repasted it with some trusty Arctic Mx-4 and I was really shocked with the results, average temps were now at 66-67C, only maxing out at 73C in gaming, clocks went up to almost 1850+mhz and fan speeds were only running at 60-70%. It's just as you said in your description, take care of your graphics card and it will take care of you.

      The paste was still kinda fresh, wet and did not crack into bits, as in your video (5:01).
      But I do see some improvements because with the same stress test, the card is now performing 4°C cooler with 9% less Fanspeed. I do think it was worth it and I learned quite a bit, because I have have an pre-build computer and never did anything like this before.

    I have an rtx 2060s for about 3 years now, for the past years temperatures where overall ok (max 80°C / idle 50°C 0%fanspeed) but it recently started going as high as 88-89°C 100%fanspeed (my pc even shut off by itself once due to thermal throttling) so obviously something was going on. I knew that my airflow is good so I replaced the thermal paste and the results were pretty much the same as yours. Idle 45°C 0%fanspeed and 74°C 65%fanspeed after a 1hour stress test. If you're having tempratures above 85°C first check your airflow and if that's not the case you should definitely check your thermal paste, it's probably what's causing the problem. Great video!

    • @sebasstein7014
      @sebasstein7014 ปีที่แล้ว

      My 1080 I bought in early 2017 was after 5 years always close to 80°C at 95% Fan speed. Changed thermal paste a month ago and man was that thing dried up. Now its mostly between 65-69°C at 80-85% Fanspeed and I just used Mx4 so nothing fancy there and yet the temps are even better than the thermals when I had it new in 2017were temps were around 75°C at 85% fanspeed. You could probably even go sub 60°C with liquid metal, not that I would but the results are impressive.

    Wow, thanks. This worked wonders for me. I replaced the thermal paste on my RX 470 GPU, which previously would heat up to 90 degrees celsius and then just shut down the computer even on relatively low demanding games like Fortnite. Using the Superposition Unigine benchmark program, the PC would shut down in 60 seconds. Even when underclocked, the benchmark program would make the GPU run at 80-85 degrees C. After the thermal paste replacement, my GPU never goes higher than 65 degrees C.

    Thank you for posting this and giving me more hope that this was the problem with my Asus 3070. It was running at 82C on average under load and now after repasting the card it's running at 64C under load. The factory thermal paste was terrible. Idle temps went from 55C to 34C. Over 50% of the processor was bare completely shiny metal and the rest was small thin patches. In hindsight I'm shocked that it was running even as well as it was. It runs so quiet now. I didn't realize how loud it had gotten.

    This is something... 😆
    I knew that changing the thermal paste makes a difference, but so much I didn't expect. I can see that your old one was in a really bad shape too, so that can make a big difference in this case.
    I always change it for a good quality one by the way, both CPU and GPU, Desktops and Laptops as well. The manufactures rarely use the best ones and because of that I prefer to be safe, and it was ever worth it doing it, for better temperatures and lower needed fan speeds.
    I've used different ones over the years and the difference between them can be some, but not huge tho.
    The ones I would recommend after my experience are this ones (by order):
    - Cooler Master MasterGel Maker
    - Artic MX-4
    - Noctua NT-H1
    P.S.: Change the thermal pads for good quality ones, it a must do too! 😉

    I saw a few tests with different thermal pastes and also different way on how to apply it to the gpu. The most "good" brands will have more or less the same result....may a difference from 1-3 degrees between them. Very cheap paste however can be really bad or even worse than not changing it.
    One of the best thermal pastes was the Grizzly Kryonaut extreme. here you had a 3-5 degree lower tempertaure than the next best paste. But it also cost twice as much as other good paste. Other good pastes are the Noctua NT as well as the Arctic MX4 or MX6.
    It is also recommended to spread the paste over the whole gpu instead of just putting a drop in the middle or using the X-variant.
    I am about to change my paste soon on my 2070. It does not get very hot though, but I bought a new PC and want to use my old card for a while, till I can afford a new one. So that means clean the card and of course changing the paste before puttin it in a fresh new PC.

So I'm actually planning to change my paste tomorrow and I'm a little bit scared of breaking something. Is it necessary to change the thermal pads also, do they break when taking the radiator off? Or is just a good idea to do so, hence the card will be disassembled already? What are your thoughts?

    thanks for the video man, maybe because the Thermal paste was dry and dead and you see there was too much so it probably prevented the connection between the cooling system and the gpu. now i can tell its good using more thermal paste but not too much because if you don't change it regularly and let it die it'll happen again i think if there was only small amount of a dead thermal paste it would cool better coz it'll have more connection between cooling system and the gpu

    Hi, hope you see this, but I might just be speaking in the void. I understand that you dropped 29C, but you do think this was because of the game you were running, or purely from you repasting. It almost shows that you don't have good air flow in your case. The front of your case should have 3 120mm fans with 3 fans out. Would be super quite since so much air flow would keep everything super chill. Your idle temps should give around 30-35 c.

  • @KimForsberg
    @KimForsberg 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Pretty sure I have run into bad thermal paste issue on my card. Couldn't really run games as I remembered I should be able to run them. It's a close-to 4 year old ASUS DUAL 2080 TI 11GB OC. I can run games at what I thought were OK temperatures with almost no fan noise, but the newer games it just wasn't possible. Figured I must be misremembering the performance I should get out of it while essentially silent. Maybe bad fan curves or something with some update? To get it back to 0db or essentially silent, I tried adjusting curves and the clocks and power target. Noticed I was somehow getting better FPS by lowering power target and clocks. There was no change in reported GPU temperatures at full load, but the fans slowed down... Had to throttle down to 50% power target to get Cyberpunk 2077 with mid-to high-range settings to run silent. Got a proper GPU-Z version rather than the ASUS GPU Tweak III one to see the Hot Spot temperature... Myeah... it was at 109C at full load... Ordered new thermal paste just a bit ago, should arrive early this week.
    Regarding the baseline benchmarks, that's an excellent suggestion! As I'm thinking back on it, it might be that the card was this bad always, even since I got it, or maybe it got worse. Frankly just don't know. I think I probably just figured it was normal "these new cards" were much more noisy since they were so much more powerful than what I had, especially with a TI version.

    • @KimForsberg
      @KimForsberg 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just got mine re-pasted. Completely stable maxed out at 100% load (100% power use, throttled by power), 84C max, hotspot no more than 96-98C. And fan essentially completely silent at 66%. Now the only problem is Cyberpunk 2077 maxes out my CPU so I can't get more FPS anyway...
