Garage & Workshop Storage Solutions for bikes, tools, garden tools, workshop tools, ladders and other stuff... Storage Ideas to help you get organized.
Some of your storage ideas brought back memories I had forgotten about! Thank you! I am getting ready to build a work shed and am glad I saw your video! I am totally going to do your sliding door and the screwdrivers holder and the ball rack! Thank you!
Awesome! It doesn't have to cost lots to be organized. My first t up was a 2x4 workbench with some shelves and a sheet of OSB on the wall with screws in it to hold wrenches and other tools. It was cheap and awesome!
The ladder is really easy to get and it's out of the way. You have to leave some space so your door opener doesn't hit it. Talon pegs are available from Lee Valley.com. I do most all car and household repairs and any home upgrades myself. I buy good tools to do the job and always save extra money by doing my own work. Check out the rest of my channel for examples. Thanks for your comment and good luck with your garage!
Basically it's like building a floor in your house only to support less weight. I "sistered" 2x4's to the existing 2x4 wall studs. On top of those I placed my 2x4x16's as floor joists, cross braced them and tied them into the rafters (in the middle) for extra support, then added 1/2" OSB 4x8 sheets to the top. Good Luck with your build!
Thanks for posting this great video, Rob! With some dedication you can maintain order and have everything you need at hand! Good idea to have the bikes out of the way because they consume lots of space and now you don't have to endlessly move them around! The only disadventage I have with having lots of tools ia that everybody drops by to order and pick what they don't like to buy them for themselves or have somewhere laying around!:-)
Old video, but... one quick comment on the steel pegs on the pegboard -> if you get a thin screw, like a number 4, and screw it in "on top" it makes the hook semi permanent. It DOES damage the hole, but you should have thousands and shouldnt be moving them too terribly much. Basically if you have your stuff where you want it, then its a good piece of mind and stability.
Not a big fan of the steel pegs. You can also get plastic retaining clips for them but I find I like the "Talon Pegs" the best and they were cheaper for me to buy. Thanks for the info though! Some people will read your comment and say "Perfect! I'll do that" Cheers! Rob
Oh ok Yeah I was checking out the website, thing is I wanted to install 4"x8" pegboard between two posts, but then I thought maybe I could build a cabinet instead. Now I'm just thinking of winging it, nailing it to the two beams, and building a make shift frame out of 2x4s.
You can wall mount the pegboard by framing the pegboard with 1x2's (I would also run one 1x2 down the middle at the 4Ft mark) Then attach it to the wall securely. Good luck!
Some great storage solutions here Rob. I was very interested in your dust extraction system... I can see it in the video but can you explain the setup? It's clearly out of the way which is handy. Cheers Adam Victoria, Australia
I like the dust collection piping. I haven't settled on if I'll bother with it in my shop (which is why I'm here gathering ideas for my own place), but it's neat and quite out of the way in yours.
You really have to have a total shop plan. Need a location where your tools will go to set up something permanent. Good luck with your set up! Cheers Rob
It's ok, what I did was take two posts and slammed a pegboard (a few boards to act as a mount) between them, 8 feet of pegboard next to a workbench that I threw together. Also I took a garden hose that had a hole and cut it into pieces and nailed it to a 2x4 to put screwdrivers in. I made about 100 of them for about 100 different screwdrivers and pliers ect ect. that I don't hang on the pegboard. (The 2x4 is also part of the mount that holds the pegboard up on the bottom part)
you have sooo much stuff!! wat do you do for living?? well organised except the ladder thing, its a pain taking out ladder wen needed plus u were talking abt some garage opening issues, i'm sure u can do better than that! where did u find the pegs which get locked in automatically? Thanks.
I came across your channel looking for ideas to better organize my garage and I loved the idea of having a mezzanine. sadly there is not much out there discussing or instructional videos on how to go about building one. any advice would help. THANKS
Are you referring to the tool cabinet? It's from "Shop Notes magazine". The full plans are in the magazine. They give you all the cutting diagrams, cut list, parts list and build instructions. I haven't used their website for plans.
Right now I have two major things I have to deal with. 1. 3 boxes of paint supplies is not going to fit on the pegboard. 2. A box of different assorted drillbits and how to sort them out so that I can find a bit FAST. The pegboard works (I think I did use 1x2's not 2x4s). Maybe if I ever get the basement clean I'll take a picture but right now I'm busy trying to make a sail kit for my inflatable boat, just google inflatable boat instructables you'll see what I mean.
Thanks! I would have loved to go more in-depth but people tend to get board if the video's are long and if it's over 10 minutes I have to split there video in parts (it's a youtube thing). My other video's may cover what you are interested in and you can also just post questions if you like.
Great video and good ideas. I was wondering about your vacuum system. Could you give some ideas how you did yours? Also I like the sliding tool storage. Could you share where you got that? Thanks.
Dean Scott The Vac. system is described in my "Workshop Dust Collection" video. The Cabinet is from Shop Notes magazine issue 77 Oct. 2004 and they call it "Sliding-Door Shop Cabinet" It's my favourite shop project! Thanks for your comment!
Not yet. I have some videos where I made some new shop storage. Hardware and also tool display. I moved to a new house with a big shop but it's a "handyman special" so most of my videos have been renovation based lately. I'm starting to reno the shop now. New wiring, fixing insulation and vapour barrier issues, new lighting and soon I will be making a new mitre saw station. Thanks for your comment! Cheers! Rob
Hi, cool video. May I ask - how do your cupboard doors slide? Wheels or rails like draw rails? I'm considering creating some with draw rails but am interested in your opinion, please.
GardenDavesProjects The Cabinet is from Shop Notes magazine issue 77 Oct. 2004 and they call it "Sliding-Door Shop Cabinet" It's my favourite shop project! It is on patio door hardware cut into recesses in the door. The top has a simple washer used as the slider spacer. You can use barn door hardware, you could use a wheel bolted into the door at the bottom that runs on a rail. So many options! Let your imagination run free! If it doesn't work properly then try something else. Good Luck!
I have seen very little on here about the radial arm saw, but you have one! Can you do a more in depth video just on the radial arm saw and how you built the cabinet and work bench around it??? I'm building a shed/workshop this summer (I hope) and space is limited (20x20) so I have to fit my RAS in there! It's free standing with a separate bench right now.
+Gar Bow - I have a couple of video's and will be making more on the RAS. If you have more questions feel free to ask! Here are the links to 2 more videos on the RAS. th-cam.com/video/jgkUQGa_sZg/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/z9Cmtw9Fj9w/w-d-xo.html
Great tips and super organized, love it. It also looks like the display case has a slot in it for the circular saw to 'drop into' it...but not sure. Same for what looks like a jig saw in the vid. Is that what you did?... if not, think i'm going to do it when I make my power tool display. Nice Nice Nice, thanks so much!! :)
Mikel Kd I did for the circular saw but not for the jig saw. it's a quick release blade so there is no need. However if you don't have a quick release model than it would be a good idea to incorporate that feature. (I do have a video of the tool display cabinet -see link below) Thanks for your comment and good luck with your build! th-cam.com/video/m5PGPUg7bO0/w-d-xo.html
Box of 50 assorted pegs. 8 bucks at Harbor Freight One of their best kept secrets. They have a few few specialty shape racks too. A dab of clear caulk in the peg hole holds them in place and still looks ok.
yep metal ones. I've have used 5 box's in my garage so far (ha ha) I've been working on my wall for a few months in my spare time. Very time consuming to get it just right Yours is way cooler looking though.
Gitar Zan Function over fashion! Have you tried the Talon pegs? They are expensive but awesome. Hey, I'd love to see a picture (or video) when you are done with your wall of tools. Feel free to try posting it on my Channel or on my FB page facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008944516378 Also here is the Talon Pegs link - I bought mine from Lee Valley Tools talonhooks.com
I only saw today that there were other types of hooks. I wish I had seen them when I started. I still have work to do on it but I might make a video when I am done soon. I have never posted a vid but I have the gear to make them if I can find some time. Thanks for asking.
I have other video's on that subject, "workshop dust collection", "How to make a low profile double cyclone separator" and others. Just go to my channel and look through the video's. Good Luck with your build!
Good video. Are you from GTA area? Working in garage for hobby projects during winter is not easy. I am planning to move all tools in basement as garage is only functional 2-4 months.
N. Ismat Yes I'm close to the GTA. My neighbour has a fantastic basement workshop. The only problems are noise for the rest of the house and getting extra dust in the cold air returns. Enjoy your workshop and post a picture or video after!
Tobin Prowant I fix bikes, cars, and all the regular household stuff. I also enjoy woodworking and make a lot of easier projects like bookcases and coat shelves. I liked the hanging tool cabinet project as it was larger project and very useful. It also makes my neighbours stop, look in and say "Wow! You have the nicest garage!"
I'd be careful the local scrotes dont pay you a visit one night and lift the lot if i had all that on display round here the lot would be away within a week. Great storage and workshop though
those metal clips for the pegboard.... The hardware store has a black plastic clip to hold them in place (clips into holes beside the clip0.... available in Canada anyways ......
Yes those are available and there are a variety of ways to help prevent them from coming out. I still like the "Talon" plastic locking pegboard pegs the most. Thanks for your comment Ray! Cheers! Rob
Nevermind all of their plans cost money, and they are just the dimensions, not the actualy step by step process. Hell I could just make my own freaking dimensions (make the cabinet any size I want).
In industry (factories and warehouses) it would be called a mezzanine. That is their term for storage platform. In residential applications it would be referred to as a loft or storage loft. Since it's not part of my living space and is in the more "industrial" space in my workshop I usually call it a mezzanine. Based on your definition I would guess you work in "Tall building" construction, design or maintenance. Am I close?
Electrical but almost became an architect . A mezzanine is defined as a half floor between two existing floors regardless whether it is a factory or a home . The can also be balconies as many yachts have them also again the are in between the two floors or on yachts the deck and below deck . I have see industrial setting with structures they mislabeled as mezzanines , there again one had the end of the building as east and west and where backwards from the true east and west LOL . It is a loft sir .
LOL! It's just like everything else I guess. Take voltage for example. There is no such thing as voltage. Electromotive force is measured in volts. People say "what is the amperage?" meaning how much current is flowing through the circuit or what is the current rating for the breaker or device. No such thing as amperage. Current is measured in amps. Or you are selling your house people ask "what is the square footage?" No such thing as square footage but area can be measured in square feet...
Love the 'sliding doors tool cabinet super organised' with a down to earth design and material use and approach. Nice one. Thanks for sharing Rob.
Thanks! It's actually from ShopNotes magazine. I built it as soon as I saw the magazine.
Cheers!

Nevermind all of their plans cost money, and they are just the dimensions, not the actualy step by step process. Hell I could just make my own freaking dimensions (make the cabinet any size I want).
is there a room above the mezz?
No just the roof. It's about 3 feet high for storage.
Cheers,
Rob
That would make that area a loft . A mezz has a room above it .
