  • If you are looking for a thunderbolt 3 \ usb 4.0 nvme enclosure that will give you super fast read and write speeds check out this video. I will be testing the enclosure with a samsung 970 evo plus nvme and a WD SN750 nvme on my thunderbolt 3 imac . This will tell you everything you need to know if you are looking to use this with any of your apple computers.

    I noticed that you didn't put any thermal pad on your WD. Forgotten? And how does that relate to the "finger feel" temperature observation? Without thermal pad the enclosure could feel comfy, but the NVMe could be cooking!

  • @anon1div0

    I get 2787 MB/s writes with Samsung 980 Pro with M1 Mac and this enclosure. To improve cooling put a large thermal pad on bottom of the enclosure and place it on the metal base of your monitor. The monitor stand or simular can be used as a heat sync to prevent throttling.

    The render test method you did for checking the temperature isn't very useful because the file transfer is slowed down by the rendering.
    You'd be better off creating a large (e.g. 100gb) file with mkfile and copying that to the drive to see if it gets hot.
    Thanks for the video otherwise.

    @HighTechCheck Awesome!! Thank you so much for this, was looking for an enclosure that will help me with editing 4k videos on the road. :)

    Hi! I have a question regarding your Acasis enclosure. Once the Mac goes to sleep, does the case (including the SSD) also go to sleep? According to several owners, the enclosure remains powered on and warm even after putting the Mac in sleep mode.
    Thanks for your reply.

    I've been using a 2018 MacBook Pro with a 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 and Ventura OS. Using the 40 Gbps Acasis enclosure and a Samsung 970-EV Plus 2 TB, I get faster times: Write 1800 Mbs and Read 2700. When I use the Samsung 980-Pro 2TB, I get about the same: Write 1830 and Read 2730.

    Hi Tony, nice video. This is a life saver!!! I bought the same enclosure and my Adata XPG 8200 pro is only running the read and write at 600mbps +-... so it seems the NVME is the main culprit not the enclosure. I'm using M1 Macbook here. Do you happened to have a M1 Macbook to test the enclosure with WD SN750 and see what's the speed like?

Right now I don’t have an m1 MacBook to test it on but hopefully apple will be releasing the new iMac soon and I will be getting that, I know it doesn’t help you right now. 40Gbps means 5GB/s. No SSD is even going to deliver close to 2GB/s inside this expensive housing. I do not like, that the heat is just dissipated to the thin lid and not the massive base housing. Owning two pieces of this universal case anyway. Some SSD do not work good inside the Acasis, as you experienced too! The WD does not perform well. Here at my desk, with a Windows PC and Windows 11 the Acasis gives much more speed via Thunderbolt 3 with the 970 evo plus. I encountered very poor speeds with the Mac mini M1, which had been returned than afterwards. I assume it might be an Apple issue. Did you check, wether USB or Thunderbolt was recognized and connected by your Apple system? Please remember: It is NOT USB 4.0, but a weird „4“…😳

    I by myself are facing different problems: A 970 pro 1TB (the las with MLC flash and highest sustained writing rates at all) showing writing speed of 200MB/s with TB3 and 2GB/s read speed🤔😐😆 What happened there?

I tried either with the default thunderbolt cable that comes with the acasis enclosure and also with another high quality thunderbolt cable i bought. The speeds I get are still the same. I realize your comment was made 2 years and you may have found this solution. Just in case you have not I thought I would go ahead and reply. There was a communication limitation with the Mac mini read/writing to an external SSD directly. It will tend to get better speeds with a powered Thunderbolt 4 hub such as the Caldigit Element 4 or similar unit. Doc Rock on YT did a great comparison of 3 types of these. Plug the powered thunderbolt 4 hub into Mac mini and then the Acasis unit into the hub. make sure all the cables are good quality Thunderbolt 4 rated. This worked for me. Hope it helps.

  • @KevinMillard68
    @KevinMillard68 ปีที่แล้ว

    a powered thunderbolt case will give you more speed out of external drives how ever the cost of the powered cases are near 400.00 and you ll need the one witht he fastest controller inside and youll need also need Thunderbolt 4 as well. anyhow internal tho all nvme drives will run to their closest ratings to a point keep in mind pcie 4 is the newer stuff and that is not going to be in any mac dude to apples silicone you will be stuck extenral only on macs, on pcs tho with pcie 4 interal the drives are awesome my pc has a Pcie 4 nvme slot and a pcie 3 slot and the 7000+ mbs drives are freaking awesome on the pcie 4 slots ..

    @dscottstoness2436 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have the older tb3 Orico and WD Black 770 se and it gets pretty close to the same 1800 write 2400 read. So the usb 4.0 are not getting much better TB4 usb4 performance. I have heard there is a new generation coming that will get 3500. Theorectially they could reach closer to 5,000 but that is not going to happen on an iMac that has internal drive limited to 3,000 read. So save your money if its cheaper with TB3 and get the Orico.

    • @ggproductions7078
      @ggproductions7078 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the little Orico with the same drive and get 2500 plus in the Blackmagic. I don't think the difference between TB3 and 4 for data speeds will be that much, it is still a 40gb capacity. Thouh to be fair that isn't something I know a great deal about.

    • @HighTechCheck
      @HighTechCheck  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve had mine connected to my Mac studio ever since I got it 3 months ago and it can get quite warm. The case will get pretty hot if the Nvme inside is actively being used because the Nvme itself gets super hot. The case itself being hot is telling me that it’s dissipating heat away from the Nvme itself and doing it’s job. I have not had a problem with the enclosure since I bought it and since mine is doing the same thing I would assume it’s normal. I also have not used an Nvme enclosure that does not get hot and I have a few.
