Per the video's request - iPad and iPhone with USB C ports need a powered hub because they will not provide enough power out to the external device. This is probably for battery drain issues on mobile products. I have connected a USB-C Dock to an iPhone and charging, video, USB, and Ethernet have all worked. As for comments about the speed - Thunderbolt 3/4 can be negotiated at 40 GigaBITS per second. 8 Gb/s is reserved for video transmission (2x4 lanes of displaylink), so you are left with 32 Gbps for data (8 gbps x 4 PCIe 3.0 Lanes). There is some encoding and header overhead along with 10Gb/s reserved for a possible USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection. The end result for Thunderbolt 3/4 data bandwidth is ~22 Gb/s. Divide by 8 to get 2.75 GibiBytes (2,816 MiB/sec).
I got the ACASIS TBU405PRO for US$ 61.30 on sale and then bought a Crucial T500 2TB for US$ 145.99. Super psyched I only spent US$209.29 for the whole package. It still much cheaper by almost US$ 50 compared to the T7 and 3 times faster to boot. I ended up buying another T500 2TB for the same price so I can use it as a back up drive. The best part is the T500 runs so cool that it works great and doesn't throttle when used with this enclosure. Money well spent!
great video, naiive question. For the thermal pad that you applied to the acasis cover. You just peeled the film to attach to the cover. But you didn't peel the film facing the ssd. Correct me if I am wrong. Thank you. I will try to apply the same set up
How will this be when being used on the new iMac M3. I just bought the iMac M3 and am looking for a nice external SSD for mostly storage. I transfer lots of large videos that are in 4K that I upload to TH-cam for my channel. I was thinking of getting the Samsung T9 but for another small increase in $ I could get this.
I'm almost positive (willing to be corrected) that the chipset used in this is TB3, not TB4. Still fast as hell.... I have one and have exactly zero buyers remorse.
I have the model without a fan. I was using it last weekend to film with my camera. Unfortunately some of the morning footage got corrupted do to heat I think. The night time footage came out fine. I bought the model with the fan and hope I don't run into this issue again Using the acasis non fan with samsun 980
@ I do not use it everyday but often. So far no issues. My footage is no longer corrupting and with the Samsung nvme I can download a full 2tb in like 13 minutes. No more thermal throttling. I check the fan often just in case it stops working :b
Looks like iPhone 15 needs a powered Hub to connect to Thunderbolt 4/USB4.0 enclosures/drives. If you know why or have found a direct-connect solution, please share with us in the comments below.
How long before it start thermal throttling when you copy large files? I have the older enclosure and even tho it's great it does start throttling pretty fast which eliminates any advantages of fast file transfer... does this new one do a better job? Would be nice to see a test for the throttling.
I noticed that you are using a Crucial P3plus with Acasis with nice speeds. The manufacturer is not listed, can you recommend it? I have yet to get my hands on a Crucial P5plus.
My question for you is, what are the settings you used (format, etc) to even achieve MB/s transfer speeds of 800 write / 700 read? I don't feel the BlackMagic Disk Speed test is too accurate 🫤 Can you use the iBoysoft Diskseeker instead? Or some other downloadable app speed test, to see the results of it. On system rather than online software. I get 600's read and write with this. Same drive (Samsung T7 Shield 2TB)
It’s not a thunderbolt 4 cable. It’s a thunderbolt compatible. Never they write “thunderbolt” in there advertising, website or manual. “4” is for USB-C 4. It’s why they can write “40gb/s”. Speed that you will never get because of the hardware limitations. The more you’ll reach would be 2850 mb/s… Please, don’t lie to the potential customers!
What was the maximum amount of data you were able to get on it? It performs well in tests, but when you need to load 500GB of data on it, it just overheats and crashes! What kind of drive did you put in it?
I bought the cheaper Acasis enclosure along with the 4tb crucial p3 plus ssd during prime day. This will be my Plex movie storage drive so the fan wasn’t necessary.
iphone 15/16 wiill only usb2.0speed 15pro/16pro 4.5w output can't use this you need a usb3.0 hub with usb power input(over 7.5W) than you can use this ssd box,but only usb3.0 speed about 500MB/s ipad pro M1/2/4 can no need external power
I have heard that that the 405m1 as well as the 405prom1 are basically the same (heat, performance). Is it nonsense to purchase the fan version due to its massive size and 30USD difference?
Thanks for watching and asking, @alfistibrasiliani! Yes, it does. It works well on my wife's Macbook Air M1. Let me know what you think if you get one.
If you use the Samsung 980 Pro+10GB/s data cable, you will find that you can directly connect it to the TBU405Pro without requiring an additional power supply.😉
Bought the same one and found the original cable is usb-c not a true thunderbolt 4 cable and on my channel I tested is usb-c vs tb4 huge difference in speed with my same nvme -
Unfortunately, many of these enclosure solutions are not reliable and can disconnect quickly. For example, I bought a dual enclosure (10GB) from Orico, and it keeps disconnecting when it heats up. As for this ACASIS brand, many people complain about those enclosures that connect in NVMe RAID.
Thanks for watching and letting me know, @DavidHarry! I was connecting it to my iPhone 15 Pro Max using a powered hub and it worked. Didn't realize iPhone 15 doesn't work with it directly connected. The enclosure works fine with my iPads directly. Looks like iPhone 15 USB support isn't as robust. Do you know why that is (power or protocol issues)?
It the power delivery. The port on an iPhone doesn't provide the same power delivery as an iPad and isn't enough to power the enclosure and drive.@@Tech4Baba
@@LuqmanHidayat00 It's not the bus speed, it's the power delivery. None of the 15 series will see this drive when connected directly, you need to use a powered hub.

Mine favorite is the ugreen one. Very well made, and the fan is very quiet.
would you mind sharing the reference? thanks!
Just bought this, thanks to the great demo.
Thanks for watching, @StratsRUs! How do you like it so far?
is that cool enough and are you happy with that purchase? Please share your feedback
Just bought the same drive and enclosure on Prime Day for $330. Thanks for the tip about sticking the thermal pad on the cover! 😅

Yes, it uses this controller: Intel® JHL7440 Thunderbolt™ 3
Wow, your review was 10 out of 10! Everything you mentioned was to the point. Thank you and may God Bless you too. Steven. U.K.
When the enclose 'green light' is lit , when does the fan work?
I just bought TBU405AIR, how they differ?
Please tell me about your Mac. Intel Mac or Apple silicon Mac?
I have a iMac 2019. If your Mac is intel Mac,this enclosure is best choice for me!

What were the temps???
What a pity you didn’t mention the most important fact of this review: how loud is the fan actually?
how thick is the thermal pad?

How did you format the drive? Did you format it in Mac or Windows. If so what was the settings
I recently bought a usb 3.2 gen 2 type c 10gbps external enclosure for £50 and to my surprise I can play dragon’s dogma 2 from it with no issues.

you need a usb3.0 hub with usb power input(over 7.5W)

ipad pro M1/2/4 can no need external power
Difference to the TBU401pro?
with which model of M did you have the speed of 7000?
Got Crucial P3 (non pro) even cheaper during Prime day. Got same speeds as Pro. Acadia max it at 2500 anyway apparently.
What is the cable lenght?

Do you think the enclosure would perform better with a faster drive?
hey, does this enclosure support thunderbolt 3 too? my macbook air (M1) is thunderbolt 3
