      Christopher Nolan is a genius.
In Memento the protagonist doesn't know where he is, literally and metaphorically in the beginning and the and; also the viewer don't know where the protagonist is mentally. Is he right in his head? Can I believe his story? These where probably some questions we all had after watching Memento for the first time.
In Prestige the narrator answered his question, he asked in the beginning, at the end.
No we probably weren't watching closely, cause we "wanted" to be fooled.
We saw the foreshadowing of Christian's character having a twin who sacrifices himself for the big reveal, when he did the "bird-disepearing-trick" and only the little boy noticed that the bird was a doppelganger. He didn't want to be fooled he doesn't understand magic like the grown ups do, who only went to see the show to "get fooled" and entertained.
Btw great video, very interesting 👍🏽

Cool experiment! I found the majority don't have correlation. It would be cool to see a video where you take the movies that do have correlation and break them down. Explain why it works or doesn't work.

Interesting video. While most of them don't really have any correlation, there were a few that stood out.
    1. Leon the Professional
    2. Memento
    3. The Prestige
    4. Spirited Away
    5. Forrest Gump

Don't know enough about most of these movies to say; Should add Terminator 2 and Star Wars (A New Hope) - though more vaguely than the ones you mentioned
Both quotes from Terminator 2 have something to do with the value of human life and seem (to me anyway) to be a direct reference to Stalin's quip "one death is a tragedy, one million is a statistic" - at least when they're back to back like that.
Both quotes in Star Wars center on R2-D2, one being spoken to him, the other spoken about him. This seems significant to me, because one of the most subversive things Lucas tried to do was make the McGuffin a character rather than a thing.

Uh Seven Samurai - one of the more obvious connections. And most of them connect just on a more metaphorical level

Lord of the Rings: Two Towers
      “You shall not pass”
      “Follow me”
One evokes not allowing entry and the other invites entry. Many parallels like this in the other dialogue

I haven't seen many of these films, and for those that I have, I probably haven't analyzed them enough to certainly know if there's any or no correlation between first and last lines, so I can't see any relationship, I'm sure I missed a few.
Though, I did initially think that the first line of a movie is usually a set up, with the last line being its pay off.
In Fellowship of the Ring, I thought that the line, "The world is changed" signified all the bad things that would come across Middle Earth, as well as Frodo's journey and the difficulty he'd have to face. While the last line, "I'm glad you're with me" could be a way of saying "The world is changing, and the road ahead will be difficult, but I'm glad you're with me." Which is one of the themes of Lord of the Rings, the need of a friend in difficult times, so I thought that was worth mentioning.
Though, aside from that, I don't see any correlation from any of the lines. Though, then again, I'm just tossing thoughts around, and I'm not a filmmaker, nor am I aspiring to be one. I just found these kinds of videos informative and entertaining. Anyway, I hope it helps!

Memento? It has perfect correlation, imo.
Watch it if you haven't seen it.

There are a lot of very smart uses of initial and ending lines in some of those movies. Some interesting thematic usages especially. Nice video, man. But cool to see something similar but with a different list from a different website. Something like letterboxd's top 50 maybe.

Not all of them has correlation, I mean the lion king in my opinion didn't have any, but I may not remember the context. But in most of them there is because the filmmaker probably wants to tie everything up. But I have no expertise in time or in the making of film, though this was entertaining enough.

For the lion king maybe the correlation is Mufasa telling Simba to "remember" that "life's not fair is it" hence an attempt to explain his unexpected death by his own brother

Memento is awesome, and had the best correlation, imo.

Interesting experiment. From the selection here, it seems as though some of the filmmakers cared about the first/last lines, while others were less concerned with it. Perhaps opting to focus more on the visuals (like the Blake Snyder model, or the Screen Rant video).
Out of curiosity - why did you include a clip from Infinity War without any dialogue, and with a shot that (spoilers) doesn't end up in the film?

    • @ThinkStory
      @ThinkStory  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yeah, I wasn't quite sure what to do with it. Not out yet for me to get a good copy to put in but also didn't want to skip from 17 to 15 and have people go, "huh? Where did 16 go? I also haven't seen Infinity War. I'm terrible!

I don't think there's quite as strong a correlation as you'd find with opening and closing shots, as a film must immediately open and close with a shot (I guess unless it's a black screen or text or something), while the first and last line of dialogue can came in at a later or earlier time. There are some films where they definitely seem to have a correlation, but for a lot of these films, the dialogue seems to be there to serve the purpose of the individual scene, not the grand narrative.

Maybe I am looking at it the wrong way but I fail to see any correlation in any of those movies.
I like the experience though, since beginnings and endings of both books and films need to correlate for the sake of cohesion.

I honestly thought the vast majority of these were completely random and had no connection. The only ones that seemed to have a correlation were THE PRESTIGE and FORREST GUMP. Also, your clip from RETURN OF THE KING is wrong. The last line of the movie is "Well, I'm back."

    In Avengers: Infinity War:
*First line:* "This is the Asgardian refugee vessel Statesman. We are under assault. I repeat, we are under assault. The engines are dead, life support failing. Requesting aid from any vessel within range. We are 22 jump points out of Asgard."
    *Last line:* "Motherfu--"
