Even though heavy music is my "home", I love *_all_* music. Always saying yes to every opportunity that came my way to play a new style/genre that's out of my comfort zone, and actually spending the time with these different genres/styles to study, understand, & learn them has done so much for me as a musician. You don't have to wait for the opportunity either, by the way. I'm always studying, and practicing different styles, genres, and techniques on my own. When you take the time to study multiple genres, you learn countless techniques, and stylistic things that can be carried over to any other genre of music. These are more tools added to your toolbox. Tools that open up an unlimited number of doors to creativity, and gigs too. Another thing that I always recommend is going back, and learning the basics, because so many self-taught drummers (like myself) skip over the basics. I'm talking about rudiments, learning & understanding time signatures, and even learning to read sheet music. I've been playing for 25 years, and I still practice my rudiments. Oh, and if you started out on a double pedal like I did (which is common with metalheads like me), and having that double pedal is your comfort zone - take it away & practice without it *(often)* so that you can learn to be proficient with a single pedal, and how to *_really_* work your hi-hats. This makes your double pedal playing much better too. These simple things can truly transform a drummer into a professional, and open so many doors. It's done so for me, countless others. *And it's **_never_** too late to do these things.* You've got to stay passionate, and keep at it (like you said). Started listening to jazz in the 50's. I was 6 or 7. So lucky to grow up during that whole time and hear the greats!!! This brings back tons of memories.
