  • Here is a vintage documentary - "The Gilded Years: St. Louis 1895-1910 (1962). From the back of the case description - "Even as late as the 1890's, cattlemen still got their herds to the Illinois stockyards via the most direct route: straight through the middle of downtown St. Louis. Despite these occasional intrusions, St. Louis' rough edges were polished by the Gilded Age. The city hosted a presidential convention, elegant Vandeventer Place became the most fashionable address, and the growing number of horseless carriages simultaneously spelled the end of the street sweeper corps and the beginning of cobblestone pavement."

😳This is fantastic!!! Why has this been hidden all these years! Incredible! While walking and driving around St Louis, I have always tried to imagine what life was like when St Louis was grand. This is the information I have been looking for-for YEARS!!! Thank you!❤

St. Louis had a great historian of its private streets and magnificent mansions - that was Julius Hunter who was THE expert and produced a series of gorgeous books on the subject. Yes THAT Julius Hunter the weather man!

What a wonderful video! I live in Chicago and I never knew neighboring St. Louis had such a colorful history. Thanks for the history.

Who was the female narrator? The voice sounded a lot like Elizabeth Montgomery.

@@leeatterberry1239actually the president at that time was a Democrat, as well as the president after him. Not everything can be attributed to Dems and Republicans.
