Excellent idea for a first timer! I have a pregnant import coming in a couple months, so I didn't want to spend a ton the first time around. Definitely helpful! Thanks for sharing 👍
My Samoyed had her litter on Jan 8th. 2 Girls and 3 Boys. Mom and babies are all healthy doing fantastic. She loves her DYI pen which gives lots of room. I've used the expensive pens and this DYI rocks.
Thank you so much for this video! Our lab Classy Majestic is due in 3 weeks! I thought there must be a less expensive way than the $300 whelping boxes (pad not included) you find for sale. So thanks again, Maddie!
Should the whelping box be set up in the bedroom? My dog sleeps in the bedroom with me so I imagine that would be the most comfortable place for her. I have another dog though, so I'm conflicted she might need her own space
Some people do it in their closet, or separate bedroom, kitchen area blocked off. You should definitely keep your doggo's separated because she will be protective and stressed if she doesn't have her own space!

Yes, Maddie was about 90-95 pounds right before birth. They stayed in here until they were about 3 weeks old and then i switched them into an actual area confined in a puppy pen. Let mom in and out for feedings.
My lab is a high strung and high drive lab from feild lines and can run circles around my Belgian malinois. She and her pups cannot be pet dogs. Working and sport only with experienced owners. Hope she can be ok with this set up without destroying it 😂
This is called "pig rail", its so the puppies are not squished by mama, when she lays down sometimes puppies get stuck under her and can suffocate so the pig rail leaves room around the entire box for a puppy to be able to breathe in case this happens
@@MaddiesLabradors That rail does not prevent the mother from laying on a new born, several day old pup. Newborn puppies don't stray that far away from their mothers EVER, or as a rule anyway...nor would they have a clue they need to move under a rail or to the edge of a box away from mom's warmth and tit. This rail makes no sense to me. Maybe for pigs but for dogs? JMHO!
Sometimes the mom can accidentally sit on the babies or push them to the side unintentionally. The noodles are if the puppies get squished by mama, it basically gives them room to breathe, move if this happens against the side wall.
I am SOOO glad I found this video. Our Daniff is expecting in a week or two and we’ve never done this before. She loves it!
Was going to make an expensive wood whelping box but after watching your video I’m definitely making one of these....Thank you!
I'm so glad I just found your video. I was about to spend alot of money on a whelping box for my dog. Picking up my supplies today for this.
Glad this helped ! Good luck 🐶🐶

Thanks. I was wondering how space you gave for the pig rails. I have a larger breed.

So glad this video helped you! And enjoy your pups :)
Thank you for this video
I am going to cut up a cheep egg crate from to go on the bottom then the welping pad then a cover.
I was thinking the same thing
This video was extremely helpful. Can puppy pads be used in place of the whelping pad? Thanks
Ofcourse! You will just change them out :)

I would recommend melting holes for the Pigrail, rather than drilling. Done carefully they have a thicker, reinforced edge, free of microfractures.
This was so helpful! Thank you!
Thanks!!!!
good job. have Pyradoodle that's due in a week or so....thank you, this helps me tremendously.
Best of luck! :)
Do you have a link to the whelping pad you used or a size? My 2 year old Standard Poodle is due anytime now. Thank You!
Looks like 48" is the best to use.

Any heating element added?
Would you say that this build is big enough for a German Shepherd? We’re trying to prep on a budget

Please can you post the link for the fitted mat that you have for the base of the pen?
I believe that link is in my other video - whelping essentials
Can you post an item number for the pool I can’t find it
Why do you have noodle thing inside of tub? Could I just use a pool without using that? My dogs are small shih tzus.

@@MaddiesLabradors How far off the ground does the rail have to be? Thanks.

How old was your dog?
3 here!
Did any pups get squashed?
No thankfully, I kept a camera on them first week and a close eye on them. They all survived.
How big are your dogs?
Wondering if this could work for my 115lb female.
95 lbs by end of pregnancy! These pools are 60 inches across, should work!
I don't have any dog
Man I need this just lost five puppies out of ten
I’m sorry :(
😥
What are the noodles for
Sometimes the mom can accidentally sit on the babies or push them to the side unintentionally. The noodles are if the puppies get squished by mama, it basically gives them room to breathe, move if this happens against the side wall.
They are called “piggy rails”
