Her voice has a haunting feeling in this song. As a guy, hearing this song sung by a woman really changes the perspective & hits home to me about lost love.
1dreamer1000 that's such a lovely thing to hear. i grew up on crosby stills nash, pink floyd, king crimson, and then through an odd friendship connection i was so fucking honoured to hear crosby stills nash supporting me when i was going through a really bad fucking time for a long time (th-cam.com/video/ca4f9npQB5Q/w-d-xo.html) anyway i'm rambling but this fucking song i love it so much x x x
Listened to it 10 ten times in a row this morning, cried all the time. Cass is a symbol of a period full of art, freedom, poetry and beauty. And this period will never come back, it is lost, forever.
Princess Pancake I'd have to say Streisand has the purest voice in recording history, and I'm not a Streisand fan. I was, and remain, however, a fan of Cass Elliot's and agree that her voice was one of the purest (I'd have to say that Denny Doherty had one of the purest male voices as well). Karen Carpenter, if she had had better musical direction, would have been a legendary jazz singer. She held the perfect voice for it. As it was, her vocal gift was eclipsed by the "pop tunes" under her brother's direction. Then again, maybe that's all she wanted. I don't know. I couldn't stomach The Carpenter's music, but recognized an outstanding voice being eminently wasted. Just my view, of course. I know many are fans of The Carpenters. I just thought Karen held greater potential.
+nahnni Huuuuh! Interesting!... I personnally consider Joan Baez's voice to be the purest of all recorded female voices of all times... I feel sad sometimes feeling that nobody else seems to share my point of view but oh well... That draws nothing from Mama Cass's phenomenal voice and timber!...
Yes. Linda Ronstadt has, to me, the best "pop" female voice ever. It could be pure but it could be a lot more besides. Linda could sing anything: folk, country, pop, rock, mariachi, opera and she did it all with such modesty. I love Mama Cass.
This is one of those songs that can make me so emotional even without lyrics. I think I would feel just as moved even if I couldn't understand english at all. Cass Elliot has one of the most beautiful singing voices I've ever heard.
Cass Elliott is another singer no one deserved. She was the main singer in The Mama's & The Papas that the music industry didn t deserve even when she had her own TV Specials. You don t appreciate the natural talents you get!!!!
I just discovered this song, likely because radio play of the Spoonful back then rarely or never included this song. But wow, Cass Elliott does a helluva' job on this... Hear the shadings of emotion in her voice, so textured as to define a single meaning... I miss her... So young at 32, and at the height of her solo career. take care mama....
I found this after listening to the Lovin Spoonful all afternoon. Wow....I'm blown away! Cass nailed it as good as anyone....maybe even John. Glad to have been a teenager in the 60s ...but here I am 50 years later still discovering truly phenomenal music from the period.
Honestly my heart aches for her and how she was taken too soon, I was born in 1997, I'm only 24, but there's something about Cass Elliotts spirit which touches everyone, I feel like I miss her yet I never knew her. Such a beautiful soul.
Didn't wanna have to do it Didn't wanna have to break your heart Didn't wanna have to do it I kept a-hopin' from the very start But you kept on a-tryin' And I knew that you'd end up a-cryin' And I knew I didn't wanna have to do it at all Didn't wanna have to do it Didn't wanna have to be the one to say it Didn't wanna have to do it I kept a-hopin' there'd be somethin' to delay it again Yeah, but then No, I didn't wanna have to be the one to say "The end" Was a time that I thought our love could fly and never never fall Why should I suppose we were never really meant to be close to each other at all No, I... Didn't wanna have to do it Didn't wanna have to be the one to say it Didn't wanna have to do it I kept a-hopin' there'd be somethin' to delay it again Yeah, but then No, I didn't wanna have to be the one to say "The end" No no, not the end, no no no
Thank you so much for posting the lyrics.!!!!! Such a beautiful song. I still think Amy's theme is right after Moon River in terms of perfect composition.!!!!
Beautiful version of a gorgeous song. Another brilliant writer, John Sebastian, from the 60's and 70's. Cass had such a beauty about her. Such a lovely girl with a voice that just goes straight to people's hearts. RIP Cass Elliot.
Yes, she did. I so love your comment. John Sebastian was a friend of Cass's and she helped bring the Loving Spoonful together. She was a lovely girl in every sense and she, of course, died far too young.
1:36 "we were never meant to be close to each other" is a great line to juxtapose with this image of Ellen Cohen and Dennis Doherty hugging and looking like they're truly happy. A hidden happiness, of course.
Omg, seeing her hold her arms wide for her daughter Owen, crushed me 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺. It’s like she knew the end was comin and we all listened and watched it play out. She died before I was born but I wish we were peers so I could tell her she was amazing as she was, so she wouldn’t have put her body through so much trying to fit in. RIP Queen.
Here is a song - I hope you didn´t miss it I did - until today this song is so beautiful, so absolutely perfectly sung. It makes me cry God Bless Cass Elliot
Really great vocal. Cass seems like the kind of person you would just instantly like in person..just so laid back and cool. She really was the catalyst for a lot of the bands that ended up forming around her.
I was cruising TH-cam and stumbled upon this gem of a song that I had never heard. I've always been a fan of the Mamas and Papas since "Monday, Monday" and all their other great popular hits but never had I heard Cass sing this one and so beautiful that it made my eyes water. And as if it weren't enough, the beautiful photos of Cass being shown during this great song just made me fall in love with her. Wish I could have met her back then. Gone too soon.
Eduardo Franco Ocnarfeara Thanks so much for posting this! I love coming across a gem of a song, like this. I'd never heard her sing this before and I've just listened to it 5 times. For a song recorded in 1965, it still sounds like a song you might hear today, very current sounding. She sounds absolutely fantastic!!
Such a talent. Love listening to her. All my life I have been loving her. I remember her variety show and watching it. No one like her around any more. Whatta shame.
An absolutely beautiful version by Cass...haven't listened to it in awhile, but everytime I do I'm amazed how soulful this is....Cass was special, I really do miss her : (((((((
the guitar parts in this are hauntingly poignant and fantastic.. casses voice alongside the music is a perfect match. so sad she was snatched away so relatively young. can just imagine her dueting with a contemporary artist and making magic.
@@9graff9 The original was by The Lovin' Spoonful, led by composer John Sebastian (pictured above), on the Kama Sutra label. It was the B-side of their huge hit from April of 1966, "Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind?" and was also included in their 1966 LP, "Daydream." Jackie DeShannon later did a version of it on her 1968 LP, "Me About You."

oh god, Ive listened to this about 10 times now. Such a beautiful song sung by a lady with a big voice and an even bigger heart. I for one would love to have known her.
Awesome voice. I thought the Judy Driscoll version was even better but listening to this a few times Mama's voice really grew on me. Can't believe she did this in 1965.
this may be the most beautiful song I've ever heard. To think this beauty got cut short is such a tragedy. If only she could have graced this earth longer. Every note she selects has such nuance and strength. Also, I think Morrissey built an entire career on this song! haha!
This is so beautiful her voice is so beautiful rest in peace Mama Cass May those who hurt you regret the things they did to you and may you have found peace in heaven.
Thank you very much for posting this Mr. Ocnarfeara! This is the "ANGELIC" voice of "MAMA CASS"! and yes I totally agree with all of the other brilliant comments posted! She was one of the most prolific singers of the "Hippie Generation"!!! and yes,it's really too bad that this was never released...maybe "SEBASTIAN" thought it might have sounded better than his release! and "CASS" did not want to offend "JOHN"(who knows for sure). However, I personally listen to this beautiful version several times a week! Thank you all very much for taking your time to read this.....

One of Sebastian's most beautiful songs, but so complex that it takes a genius like Cass to bring it to life.
