  • Lets take the Mystery out of making fillers and putties out of epoxy! You can do everything from glueing a skiff together, to bedding hardware, to bonding in a new transom or stringers with the right epoxy additives. It really is some great stuff, but which additive do I use, and how do You mix it? Join us in our families boat shop as I show you how professional boatbuilders make all kinds of different fillers and putties with epoxy, as well as some pro tips and tricks! But don't worry, these products are made for the DIYer and are very user friendly. West system epoxy is a brand that most people have seen, and there products are available worldwide, so we are going to be using their products today, but they will work well with other epoxy brands. If you are using another brand of epoxy, they may also make their own line of additives as well, but many of them are going to be very similar in use. So sit back and enjoy some time in the boat shop as we make some epoxy fillers and putties! If You find this video helpful, please consider liking, sharing, commenting, and subscribing to the channel. Thanks for watching!

Another great video Capt. Joe! I appreciate you taking the time to explain these fillers and how you would use them. I was poking around my boat storage area a few days ago and noticed one of my project boats has a tiny pinhole in the hull below the waterline. We've been getting a lot of rain and the boat is storage outside uncovered and water was seeping from the hole. Also, the same boat has what looks like a blister below the waterline as well. So, looks like I have a few repairs to do in the near future. Any suggestion as to how you'd repair? I'll check but maybe you already have a video covering these subjects? If not, perhaps an idea for a future DIY video. I always value and appreciate your videos and help. Thanks Capt. Joe!

Awesome videos! Can you please do a video about repairing old, crappy epoxy repairs? I bought an old sea ray and want to fix the previous bad repair and gel coat. Seems like I need to grind it out and start over with a little mat and vinylester. It's a large gouge. His repair seems water tight, but looks terrible! 😢

Thanks again for this boat-building/repair content you have been creating recently. On comment to all concerning epoxy safety. I work with Epoxy daily in a research and development lab and I never handle Epoxy or Hardeners without covering my skin(long sleeves) and gloves. Eye protection is also very important. Epoxy is what is called a sensitizer. The more your skin is exposed to it, the more likely you will encounter a bad reaction to it. It's like Poison Ivy. You can be non-allergic for some time and then suddenly without warning, you get a serious reaction from small exposure. Once you are sensitized, I don't believe it can be reversed and you will not be able to work with epoxy again without having a reaction to it. The Silica is also very serious. The box/vacuum solution is a good one, but if you ever sense you breathe any of it in, you need to increase your protection against breathing it in. I would suggest always wearing a mask that fits very securely when using dry silica powder.

It really doesn't matter if you add the filler before the hardener. Infact, if you want a lot of pots, then mixing the filler first, then the hardener will allow you to get working quicker with a longer working time

    • @FishBumpTV

    Helllo! Me again...
I have yet to seen a similar or almost exactly the same instruction video as this one BUT only using polyester and what you can do with different fillers and additives. All channels, including this one just bring up some magic can (which is not available world-wide, or rather, is available but under some other mystifying brand name) with some magic putty or filler. So far I have had some success in mixing polyester with glass balloons and silica. I am not confident enough to start using some fibre material though. Would be really appreciated if you made a video showing how to make different putties and fillers from scratch using polyester as resin. I simply cannot afford epoxy in most cases.
    Thanks in advance!

Hi Joe, where do you draw the line between lightweight gap fillers like the 410 and those PU expanding foams (not the construction foams) for filling hollow structures? I'm currently working on an orthotic insole and I want to fill the space underneath the arch support.
    What would you recommend:
    -Hollow with strong outer shell
-Hollow with foam filled in (which density?)
-Filled with 410+epoxy and sanding some slots in

I have used the 406 and the 403 with polyester and vinyl Ester resins. I don't usually recommended using gelcoat over epoxy, it can have unpredictable results. Vinyl Ester is another very good option that many people are not aware of. It has many of the qualities that people like about epoxy, but gelcoat will bond to it very well. I will have a resin comparison and guide video coming out very soon for you guys.I Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

I tried something one time that may be a bad idea...I don't know, but I thickened polyester resin with the fiberglass dust from the demolition. It seemed to work fine...the boat is still untested. do you have an opinion or have you ever heard of anything like that?

    • @FishBumpTV

I have actually heard of someone doing that before, but not sure how long term use and durability worked out for them. We just use tried and true, tested products in the shop since it is what we do professionally. We always want to stay on the safe side. With that being said, the demo dust may work out just fine for you. Hope this helps and best of luck with your projects!

Thanks for watching all the way from Indonesia! We have links below our video descriptions for most of the products we use in our videos. You should also be able to find it online. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

@@fadlysegeri5558 I would assume it can be shipped to Indonesia, but I don't know exactly how. Overseas shipping is not my area of expertise. Maybe someone reading the comments would know. Sorry, I wish I could help more

I would not use kitchen utensils for this because I value my hide.
