It was me who commented last vid ✋🏾. It seems like it was well received so I have more. Quick history lesson Hip hop evolved out of Caribbean sound systems culture that was happening in immigrant communities in New York in the late 70s early 80s. In sound system culture you had an MC who would “toast” - say words rhythmically over the songs the DJ played to get a crowd response. When the crowd responded well to track the song was played a second time ( called a repeat or reload). Hip hop kept the toasting and changed the beats evolving into early rap music in New York. London also had heavy Caribbean immigrant communities who also brought sound systems culture over in the 70s and 80s except that turned into lovers rock, jungle, garage and finally grime due to other musical influences (the UK loves electronic music) We kept the DJ, the MC, the crowd work and the reloads. Grime is Hip hop’s distant cousin three times removed. When MCs would toast back in the day didn’t have “bars” like in Hip hop but had rhyme schemes and flows. Hip hop created the modern day “bar” with schemes or a setup and a punch. Old school MCs took more to similes and metaphors which is why you get simple bars like “high like the sky” an easy rhyme with a simple simile. As Grime is still closer to the OG MCs you are allowed to not punch Hip hop style if you have clarity, cadence, flows and are in pocket because again it about the crowd. As Hip hop grew, jungle, garage and grime MCs began implementing the other kind of bars (traditional rap bars) because grime MCs also listened to Hip hop. Which is how you get some artists who can bar to a Hip hop standard and still do grime. In short Hip hop has a grading scale that’s completely separate to Grime. There are a wider variety of things you can do in grime than in Hip hop which is why you get a Scorcher and a D Double E and both are highly rated. Everyone who loves Grime also likes Rap or at least understands the way Rap bars work. When Americans first hear grime the hear “rapping” and assume it should be graded the same way as Rap. In this reaction when Scorcher is flowing both of y’all have your heads bobbing damn near in sync - that’s what grime is supposed to do. Grime is designed to create a vibe
The whole “vibe” aspect of it and the gimmicks kind of come from dancehall music and Jamaican culture, which was an important part of grime’s foundation. That’s also where the reloads come from and the clashes (kind of like rap battles but not necessarily lyrical, sometimes you can just win off getting everyone turnt). All of this comes from outside of the realm of rap music so I understand why it’s alien to you
Wretch 32 and Scorcher were good friends till Wretch smashed his Scorchers baby mum while he went to prison. Thats why some ppl don’t like Wretch no more too
Grime sounds sooooo much better live compared to on record purely because the energy is what makes the genre exciting not necessarily bars. So I completely understand everything that you man are saying. I think someone explained it last vid but grime just comes from a completely different genre of music compared to regular hip hop. It comes from like garage music and electronic dance which is like rave music and a very UK thing.
