But when it gets to the art of creating joints and how and when to use them this book really starts to teach you something. At least that was my experience.
I had a 10" Dewalt compound miter saw for around 12 years (light duty). It still works great th-cam.com/users/postUgkxPeGkHOMe05FySypTOvYumxMn-xi39oRe but I wanted something bigger. My only complaint about the 10" was the location of the motor, and this version fixes that issue. The XPS system works well. My only request for future versions is a dust collection port (or adapter) that fits large shop vac hoses (or standard PVC pipe fittings) a little better. But that's not a complaint, just a request.
John, this video was absolutely what I needed. I really appreciate that you included the mistake about the corners being switched because I know that would certainly happen to me. That was worth its weight in gold right there. Thanks so much!
Hello from Virginia, USA. I make very similar work benches. I start with the 2x4 shelves and just make something similar to how’d you frame out a wall. Two long pieces lengthwise, short pieces going up and down. But instead of doing L bracket legs, I just use a single 2x4 on the ends and put in pieces to fit between the shelves. This acts as half lap joints. Very conservative on the amount of materials used, and very strong.
Looks absolutely great. I had a good chuckle when you said, "the shop is in a complete mess and I can hardly move in here." I'm in a 1 car garage and building a camper. Probably about a half meter around it to move about :D
Very effective and efficient. I have a tendency to overthink designs and end up shying away from making things,but watching you gives me confidence. I have a number of 4x2 lengths sitting in my shop waiting to be turned into a pillar drill bench...now I know how to do it, so thank you 😊

Another great project john. The thing about these projects for yourself and these life quirks is there your own. For a sparkie you have a good grasp of the woodwork and thats coming from time served chippie. As an FYI. All timber these days here is PAO or planed all over. This reduces the 4x2 to the smaller dimensions but your right to measure your pieces to the project and take nothing for granted.
I just found your page and I can't wait to get started on some of these projects, I'm new to woodworking by myself but spent many years watching my husband build things, I have a 400 sq ft workshop to get myself set up in and lots of power tools, I just need to get my workspace organized and this video is a great first step for me, thanks so much!

Safety Glasses ?....... That's the thing that has been drummed into me in every shop environment I have been in all my life! Even at work if we don't have our safety glasses on we get wrote up big time.

This is an awesome build and I love how simple it is. I am trying to get your measurements and wanted to confirm what I heard in the video did you say the internal frame of the workbench is 320mm x 620mm. I have made my first side of the workbench and while I don't need to be exact, I am trying to place a 12" double bevel sliding miter on it and want to make sure there is enough clearance in the back of the bench.
Just discovered your channel and its rapidly becoming my favourite. No nonsense or flapping about, just getting on and getting things done. The only problem now is you've got a lot more space to fill. Can't be too long before we see a table saw in there... 😉

It is interesting how things are referred to in different localities. Here in the states, we refer to the lumber as 2x4, but you refer to them as 4x2. BTW: I have ordered Bosch's Surgeon 12-in 8-Amp 18-volt Dual Bevel Cordless Miter Saw with Laser Guide.
Something to add that you'll probably find helpful would be fence extensions on either side, to help you align longer parts and as a place to clamp stop blocks for long pieces. There'd likely be enough room in front that you could use the grinder there. Or you could make the fence removable by bolting it down to threaded inserts in the table top. Just a notion.
I thought about it but the only fences that matter for accuracy are the ones on the mitre saw and I wanted clear worktops, I might still put in t-tracks for stop blocks.

Thanks for the video. I’ve built the same as your bench just customised measurements around a window in the garage. Might eventually close up the shelves underneath with drawers or cupboards. Used formply for the top. Gives a slippery surface for sliding wood across.
Good job! I like the way you built the main structure. As far as the mitre saw hood is concerned, I would lower it to reduce the open front area. The dust extraction would benefit from this.

I like the fact that you leave the mistakes in, it makes me feel a lot better when I mess up! I'm about to build a very similar bench set-up in the workshop I'm building. The problem I'm having is how to calculate the height of the workbench. How did you arrive at your height?

It's just amazing... RN I'm doing traditional woodworking cause I don't have enough money nor room for big saws (and I leave in an apt so I dont want to make too much noise)... And every time I watch U I really think about the difference between the two... I really want some electrical saws but I really think that the most important thing is the fun of working with wood.... And I have a question - Is the workbench strong enough? the table top for example is held only by screws, the legs dont directly support it Love your vids man!

Make it to suit you, pick a height that is most comfortable for you to work at .A standard worktop is 36 inches I like to keep mine at 40
