Space Battle - 8-player FFA - Marble Game

  • In space battle, space ships must fight each other for survival. The laws of physics are obeyed - if a ship is travelling at great speed, it will continue travelling in that direction until it spends enough time thrusting in the opposite direction.
    They have the following weapons in their arsenal:
    Railgun - Fires an unguided projectile at high speed, devastating at short to medium range.
    Missile - Explosive projectile that homes in at the target continuously until it hits, dealing massive damage.
    Point Defense Cannon (PDC) - Short range machine gun that primarily is used to shoot down Missiles, however can be used effectively against other ships in close range.
    Movement is guided in relation to the enemy ship. The ship has four modes: slight left/right or hard left/right. The ship faces the enemy ship offset by a small or large amount in the chosen direction, and accelerates forward.
    Colours:
    Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Cyan, Blue, Purple and Magenta

    Cool, and very chaotic. Kind of starting to show the limits of the concept as-is, ship fights this large could use some tuning. Missiles, for instance, become an extremely prevalent threat, especially with how relentless they are. So either the missiles could use a redesign, or the counter to them. Personally I'd go with the former - make missiles less relentless, give them a fuel limit so they can't keep trying to hit a ship if they missed the first approach or two. That way missiles, which are more destructive than railguns, become merely harder to evade rather than absolutely needing to be shot down.
    One thing I'd also change about the ships themselves: the internal space where the marbles bounce, is all empty areas and straight lines and right angles. This is a very bad shape for making interesting bounce patterns. A few angled or rounded walls, or round bumpers in the middle of the 'rooms', could have interesting effects on the ships' behavior.

      If I were to put a limit on missiles, I would make it so it lasts 10 to 15 seconds. After that, they keep moving with inertia until they go outside the screen

      i would consider if the target is not in 30° detection range (unless it was initial rotation toward target for 5 second) the missile lose track and explode in 10 second (or 15 second after inital tracking) but it was possible to reacquire target (being fire and forget missile) and can contiue seeking toward target

      I've been thinking the bounce pattern thing for a while now. Especially with the "load missile" and "shoot missile" bounces. It becomes an easy loop of destruction

    This is super cool! I really enjoyed all the chaos. Even though it's only five minutes, if you rewatch it you can pay attention to different ships to get a totally different experience. I would like to point out though, that when blue dies at 3:25, magenta, purple, cyan, and orange's point defence cannons grey out, and they never turn green again for the rest of the video. Red and green however, which are the two ships closest to blue when it dies, are still functioning properly. No idea why this happened, but it didn't seem to matter too much in this battle since neither won in the end.

    Now that’s what I call the ultimate space battle!
    Hopefully, the 4 remaining victorious ones will defeat a BOSS (should be in a shape of a Scorpion is my suggestion).

    Something I think would be interested in seeing explored would be teams of simpler, more specialized ships. Could make fights more dynamic if a color loses a ship, and the class of weapon it had.
    Also, as another suggestion (though it could pair nicely with the above) would be just some straight up new weapons.

    It looked like purple was going to be the first to die right at the start, then they got smart and kept away from everyone else and just let them all kill eachother.

    Cool, second choice won. You know, as a thought, a 'scotty' section on the ship. Small, hard to get into, but if the ball goes in, they get an extra ball and it 'shuts down' for a bit. :D

    Idea from my brainbox: You should do a space race! Have an economy, building, and launch process, and the marbles have to create a good enough rocket to reach the moon. There can be failures!!! Just an idea though.

    Since I made a super in depth story in the 4 ship FFA I may as well give backgrounds to these 8 ships. Not gonna be as long as that comment but I'll do my best.
    Magenta: HMS Constellation. Royal battleship from the ringed world of Secilia. Tasked with protecting the royal family against interstellar threats, given full authority to fire upon any who challenge it. Arrived to eliminate intruders that passed through restricted territory.
    Red: Devastation Infinity. Warship hailing from a void under the Orion Arm of the galaxy. Searches and destroys those deemed "too noisy" for the Voidlet tribes. Cannot wait for the day they get to ruin entire worlds again just to feel wickedly satisfied.
    Purple: M.W.P.D. Unit 650. Space police cruiser patrolling the sector. Loaded with automated weaponry on the hunt for unruly ships regardless of who is inside. Accidently fired upon by another ship in the area prompting action and surveillance.
    Orange: "Grease Monkey." A fast-food delivery ship with a group of cartel members inside fronting for their org. Exiled from their moon home of Unvello 7 for selling without a license, good thing they hid the space drugs well. The weaponry on the hood, not so much.
    Blue: Regalia 88-R. Military fighter from the wartorn world of Dura 3, decorated with medals for saving multiple moons from destruction. Sent on a mission to another world known as Numbri to be a peacekeeper and overthrow a coup threatening relations.
    Yellow: Perihelion '72. Nomadic merchant and transport ship with a family of explorers and entrepreneurs with a love of adventure. Transporting tons of a heavy element to a museum on a space station called Oasis. Hates space pirates.
    Cyan: Skyspear Series 9. Settlers who got lost trying to find their way to the watery world they call "Big Blue." Worried they will lose their beloved carrier, they will fight tooth and nail to keep their only means of transport until they can build more ships.
    Green: "Salvation." Autonomous robotic beings attempting to keep their homeworld of Technesis from freezing due to being launched into space by a black hole, harvesting stars for heated helium with specialized weaponry. Desperate and will kill to find more stars.

    I may have a good idea to visually improve this mode, procedurally generated backgrounds, just so you can have the image be more continuous while showing the ships to actually seem like they are moving on the player cameras

      @@Gleb08 When I made the first team battle, all I did was change the logic for target selection and forgot to prevent hitting allied ships. That's not difficult to add luckily.
      What is taking long is designing a nice layout for the plinkos/ships that can fit many ships neatly - and the plinko camera will probably have to go.

      @@Gleb08 Thanks! Yea in a way I've made my life a bit difficult with the way I've built the game up to this point. I need to refactor a lot of code to get it more flexible so that I can easily do the various formats.

    Third to be taken down, damn. At least my pick got a necro kill (a kill made after dying, often caused by remaining projectiles after death)

    The point device guns are still a little ineffective… I would suggest it will always be on as long as there is a missile/ship in a certain radius around the circle?

      That would be a bit overpowered... but it does give me an idea. I'm thinking of making it like that but with a limited ammo supply that recharges after a while. That would make it so that a large enough barrage of missiles would be able to overwhelm the defenses.

    idea for a fleet battle one: there will be a carrier flagship that spawns all the frigates and cruisers and stuff but they will be ai controlled and at the start there will already be a few frigates/cruisers and destroyers all will be controlled by ai and the flagship will be like the ship we know rn but bigger stronger and an area to spawn ships, like if you agree on the idea

    Oh boy… this is going to be carnage. Ya going to do 32 next? Love the vid though. CHAOOOOOSSS!!!! Also, nice job keeping a lot of realism with the zero g and no SFX. In space, you can’t hear anything through it.
