Absolutely gorgeous.. Pound for pound the best unit ever built IMO..
I may be biased of course because my first unit was an 88 ..

Just come across this and had to watch, I remember theses when I was a child and this was what got me hooked on trucks. It was a small company called Roy Betts and he ran three of them at the time, I slept across the seats many a time so well done a joy to watch, Mark now in norfolk

🙂 wow thanks for the ride down memory Lane...
Man i spend a lot of hours in trucks like these when i was a kid, e and my best freind . Hos dad had a small trucking Company back then.
And he had a lot of trucks like this 😉👍 good times ...
He had the volvo 88 and the 89 he also had scania 112 and 111 with a crane on the back the One the driver had to climb and when the driver was operating the crane he was sitting on the back of the crane high in the air with these 6 sticks i think it was .
THIS ONE he used in the forrest to drive Wood to the harbour
And his dad also had a lot of other trucks and machines cant Remember all of them .

Fantastic to see the restoration, great job. I bought 4899 IP back in 1988 and ran it til 1992. I often wondered where it ended up.

    • @DavidJoydajcajpajpaj

Hi Donal, small world, Well the cab is still on the road, due for a paint job this winter 19/2020. As you would see on the video it was in a bit of a state when Mike purchased it but at least it was possible to rebuild it. There was no chance at all of rebuilding the original cab. As far as I know the rest of 48991 IP was sent to Allan Carruthers at Ecclefechan in Dumfriesshire. He was going to try and restore it back to road condition but we have never heard weather it got done or not. Really pleased that you contacted us as it all adds to the truck history. Kind regards Dave.

Great restoration, really good effort. I love how the euro trucks had the advertising signs built into the cabin roof, fibreglass I guess. A really good insight into the actual frame work of the cab, brackets etc. My guess would be 270hp. Would look great with 40ft trailer with 2 containers on. Cheers from Brisbane Australia.

    • @DavidJoydajcajpajpaj
      @DavidJoydajcajpajpaj  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for your comments Andrew, You are right about the cab roof pod, they are fiberglass, only as big as the name board it's self. UAG is a 290hp engine with a 16 speed spliter box. Very fast if you want it to be as it does not have a speed limiter fitted. Present trailer is a period (1978) Low Loader which we carry our (1944) Bedford QL Fire Engine and Shepards Hut to the rally's.If you look through my video's you will find the trailer rebuild and some Rd Runs riding in the cab with Mike. All the best from a very wet and miserable UK. regards Dave.

Excellent restoration. So happy to see such a truck history's milestone fully recovered in full running condition. These trucks (F88, F89) hooked me on as a child on trucks. Actually there is an example (F89), in almost perfect condition, working normally in my area (Piraeus, Greece), moving containers from port container terminal to their destinations and back. I could send you two photos of it I have, If you are interested.

All the replaced panels had to be hand made as you could not buy them, not even from volvo direct, and they did go out of there way to try and find them for us. Volvo even found us a complete workshop manual and parts list which they donated to us making it easer to work from, needles to say it did not help fabricating the new panels. Kind regards Dave.

Nice to see a happy ending, and the exhaust cleared up. Dad drove out of Leith / Granton on fish till we came to Canada in 65. Mostly AEC’ and Albion’s
He stopped driving when we got here, and I started after 5 years working at a Cummins branch. Started driving in 76, still driving long distance in Canada
and U.S. Miss the old days though. Owned 2 Kenworth cabovers, one I drove for 26 years. Still have it, but it’s days are behind it for me.
I admire your perseverance to see this project through. Looking at the video, I see it’s 10 years ago. Where does the time go. Today I drive a Volvo VNR.
Not my favourite truck, but then again I’m nostalgic for the 70’s and the 80’s. You nan go for weeks without seeing an old cabover on the roads in North
America. I miss driving my old girl, we went to the 4 corners of the continent. Safe travels everyone.

Hi Cloudmaker, We have got the full history of UAG 999R. Bought new by David Chantry at Goole to run farm produce to London the sold to Danskin's in Scotland running general freight back to Yorks then sold on to Inta-Site brick & block haulage in Pollington Nr Goole. My son used to work for them when they used it for a yard shunter and bought it from them for restoration in 2003, went back on the road in 2009. Regards Dave.

Great to see this rebuild of a terrific truck. When the Volvo F86, F88 & Scania 80, & 110 came on the British trucking scene they transformed the way HGV`s drove & performed. The smoothness & ease of use between engine & gearbox was a revelation. They also provided superb performance, decent fuel economy, driver comfort & above all for the operators a reliability never seen before. I don`t think you could have chosen a better motor to bring back to life.....well done!

@@DavidJoydajcajpajpaj Very true Dave, it was the beginning of the end, but in our case we couldn't afford to buy British anymore since these Swedish trucks were so reliable. The one saving grace though to buying Volvo & Scania was the fact that they did source quite a lot of British components for the trucks & the cars.

In the UK you have to book a test before it is allowed onto the road and you are only allowed to go straight to the testing station and back home again that is if it does not pass it's test, but if it passes you can go where ever you want. Road Insurance has to be taken out before you can book a test so it is all legal. Thanks for your interest. Regards Dave.

Having driven F89s from the early seventies I appreciate these Volvos...Never liked the 290s they were poor in comparison to the F89 but F89 only possible in LHD. However I never understood the logic in having names for Trucks?, Yorkshire princess WTF is that supposed to mean...

Jim Bradley, I also drove F89's & F12's & your comment about 290's is completely superfluous if you had any understanding of why the 290 ever came to be. The 12 litre F89 engine wouldn't fit in under a RHD cab so the 10 litre 290 was developed as a stop gap till the F10/F12 was redy. Even more surprising is your derogatory comment towards the guy who restored this old Volvo in terms of "naming a truck & what it's supposed to mean", if you don't get it keep your rude mouth shut. Congratulations to David Joy, I remember seeing photo's of it on Trucknet around the time you finished it but this video shows people the amount of work & dedication required to restore a rotting old relic & also shows why there are so many unfinished projects sitting in sheds. Well done.

There was a G89 running around Newcastle in the last couple of years with a tri axle 40 foot trailer and a Road-ranger but i dont know if it had a Volvo engine or a Cummins, but i think it was 400 Cummins. Not sure about UK rules but i drive b-double fuel tankers out west from port of Newcastle NSW, and having long vehicle sign on that trailer would raise an eye brow or two here, they'd think you'd lost the second trailer. Nice job guys, a lot of work. I felt tired just watching you. I loved the sound Volvo motors made, i noticed it stopped smoking towards the end, bedded rings

Hi Loranga japp. Quite agree about the music but Copyright dictates what I can use and it would be a long video without music. Many thanks for your interest. Regards Dave

Many Thanks for your interest David. Your comment is noted & I thank you for being honest . You do not get anything for nothing these days and I cannot put music on that is copyrighted so have to make the most of what there is available as what they call FREE music. Maybe you can point me in the right direction with some music that you like. It would be a long video to watch if it was Silent. Regards & Best wishes David. Await your interesting comments.
