For RM you really have to pay alot of attention to his lyrics cause this man write poetrys and some deep shit which u really have to pay attention to fully understand not just vibe to his mv and music cause he's one of the best lyricist i have ever seen..😇🙂
For all of them really. Even j-hope and suga's lyrics get really deep especially jack in the box when it comes to j-hope's songs (tho hope world is actually pretty deep too but since its such a bop I guess some people don't look at the symbolic meanings behind it)
Still Life is definitely not solely about haters at all, Namjoon actually said himself it’s based on the idea that Still life paintings create the eternal life for the model of the painting, and since his life is constantly on display, he is alive forever, but instead of only being alive in the frame, he’s still moving and is not trapped in a frame
Still Life is from his album Indigo - literal masterpiece. 17:01 RM has a great sketch were he breaks down each song. He explains Still Life as being inspired by seeing still life paintings of flowers and thinking about how they look alive in the painting but that they're actually dead, and how in his life there is sooo much content of him and you can look at pictures of him from a decade ago, but instead of being those dead flowers he's still alive and evolving, so in a way he's also still life (not only dead) but also something that is up to present time or may happen in the future. Love the play on words! I think he mentions haters as in, you might think you know me, but it's based on the past and I'm still moving, I'm still living so you don't know anything.
RM is a hip hop artist. He was a respected underground rapper who, at the age of 11, started writing his own lyrics very much influenced by his fav, Nas. He’s very influenced by Old School East Coast rappers.
The English in RM's lyrics, and in all of BTS's overall, is much more meaningful and thoughtful than in most Kpop. It's not just a repeated catch-phrase or cliché inserted because a bit of English is trendy. It's words carefully chosen to continue the flow of the rhyme scheme without losing the train of thought. And for the rappers, it really shows off their skills bending pronunciations and spitting bars when they can do it across multiple languages. Also, on the topic of RM's hair -- the best haircuts (and colors) are the ones that make him look like a prince, a president, or a mob boss. Large and in charge, as it were. 😎😎😎
The first song is actually called Joke, RM’s stage name used to be Rap Monster, which is why that’s there, but he also has a song called Rap Monster from the same mixtape that Joke is from
BTS Rap Line are all very lyrically deep, highly skilled, and very versatile. RM and SUGA both came from Underground Rap. By the time RM and SUGA had signed as trainees in 2010, they had at least a few years of experience with Underground Rap, and they both started writing lyrics and raps in their early teens. RM was actually a poet before he started rapping. J-Hope, the third rapper, was a Hip Hop street dancer before he signed with Big Hit, and he didn't know how to rap. RM and SUGA would teach him and he not only learned, but developed his own style, and is now just as amazing as the other two. Also, in 2012, when they had all the members and were told they would debut, they were helping each other, and RM and Suga put together what they called a "rap den" at their dorms, where they would teach the other members about rap and hip hop, and they would freestyle. They debuted as a Hip Hop IDOL group, which wasn't being done at that time. And they were bringing Western Style Hip Hop to the KPOP industry. They got a lot of backlash and hate from the Hip Hop community, as well as the KPOP community. They were bringing strong messages to their music, and writing and producing their music, which was not common in KPOP at that time. It was actually rare at that point. But it's what sets BTS apart, and they are genuine and amazing humans. *Here is the song with English subtitles - You can usually find a video with the subtitles, just search the name of the artist, song title, and Eng subs* ARMY's are good about adding subtitles. Rap Monster - Joke w/Eng. Subs - th-cam.com/video/OxMrBNBWksM/w-d-xo.html
There is a ENG sub of this MV, just search the title JOKE MV ENG SUB - an Army put it together. But honestly, there is sooooo much cultural context/references and word play that a basic translation cannot do it justice. Doolset is a trusted Army translator. I also like the way "muish's ramblings" breaks it down and explains things. I tried to share links but YT disappeared my comment.
That's happened to me so many times too its so annoying💀. Like I'll try to share a link or leave a comment and I'll come back a couple seconds later and the comment has completely vanished from the face of TH-cam smh😔
You are absolutely right : there are kpop idols who can rap, and rappers who happen to be in kpop groups. BTS rappers are definately on the second category. Which is why Suga and RM got so many backlash from the Hip hop community when they debuted as kpop idols while they were already known as rappers in underground. In a livestream, RM explained that for a long time he struggled with his identity: he didn't know if he could still be seen as a hip hop artist while being kinda rejected by the commmunity for becoming an Idol. It wasn't really his plan to debut in a kpop group. Originally he was supposed to be a hip hop group, but then the company changed the direction. He stayed but still had doubts whether it was the right path for him, especially because he didn't know how to dance at first. The two aren't the most compatible: what is asked from a kpop idol (like fan service, being neat, nice, polite, wearing makeup, etc.) is pretty different from what people usually expect from a hip-hop artist. But somewhere along the way he stopped, wondering why he was trying so hard to define himself : "I'm just me". And he decided to just do his own thing ^^ Btw, BTS has a song called 'hip hop phile' or 'Hip hop lover' where the rappers talk about all the artists they look up to, the people that made them fall in love with hip hop and want to become artist themselves.
18:35 i became army precisely because i heard authenticity in bts rapline, other kpop groups seem to me as fake and mockery of hip hop. I cringe every time the part they consider "rap" comes up. But when i first heard bts properly, i was sold on their naturality of hip hop, how they put words together, how they are lyrics are written by themselves and have meaning
Yesssss! Not hating but sometimes rap in other groups are a bit cringy. Never been really a fan of rap or hard hip hop before BTS, but RM, Suga and J-Hope's rap is like ASMR to my ears now.. 😂 💜
@@sweetlorre and i was a hip hop and rap if not lover at least heavy listener, this why those kpop "raps" just hurty ears🤷 i haven't heard single idol group beyond bts whos rap part i would enjoy and want to dig into albums bsides🤷
That's why he's the main Rapper of the group 🔥💜 Rm was very popular in the underground rap scene even before their debut. Old rappers were scared of going against 14 tear old Runch Randa (his underground Rap name)
What you say is true, as proof there is a song by Zico (RM's friend) his song is addressed to a hater who was also an underground rapper and Zico tells him "...don't forget that a certain Runch Randa beat you with only 14 years..." he said something or so in his song, that shows that RM really was a good rapper who won in underground rap battles, I also heard that Zico was the one with the beats in his raps and RM was the one with the lyrics and the rhymes, both were a good duo but joining Bts, Suga was the one who complemented the Rap Line with his melodies, but they were still good at everything 💜
Moonchild is such a profound song, all the mono mixtape is so poetic tbh. Moonchild personally is a song that has been with me through so much and is very dear to me, Rm has written it a long time ago, and said is a song for those who felt suffocated during the daytime, "i wrote this during a time i believed the night set me free"
RM is a true artist. Weirdly as a true rap and hip hop head, his solo stuff is the most eclectic. Most diverse. He does rap, hip hop, pop, rock, edm, folk, funk, and some others which you see influences. The rap line definitely get to the most musicality thus far while the vocal line, except maybe V, are sort of staying in a lane. Probably makes sense since they’re the most mature musically having written and produced the most but all the rappers are really really special and RM is just an amazing and special artist.
I've had auto translate work pretty well for spanish to english translations. But that was translating normal conversation, not rap lyrics full of slang, with English mixed in, and even made up words like Bibbidy Bobbidy.
18:35 because rm and suga and jhope are hip hop, hip hop is their start and essence. They don't pretend to be hip hop (as many of other kpop idol rappers are) they just do it their way. Yes they are also pop artist and they don't shy away from that, but over the last 10 years they all came to conclusion: fuck genres. So in RM album Indigo you basically have 10 different genres. Suga also delves into scores and i really hope to see him doing full movie score. BTS group music also always had mix of genres on every album.
RM is a poet!! His lyrism and talent is out of this world. He is such a versatile artist. It is so hard to recommend one of his songs because you should just really listen to all of it. You should definitely listen to more of his sole stuff such af Wildflower, Change pt. 2, forever rain and so on. But also his solos within BTS albums such as Person, Trivia Love and Reflection
Omg if you love the 1st song, he went so hard with the whole self titled mixtape, check out all of the songs, you will love it am sure, its his way responding to the haters, so its like aggresive middle finger in songs hahaha hes so good, the 2nd song, from the Mono mixtape, its to me, an emotional release mixtape, if you listen from start to finish its like getting all your emotion flowing in your body and out to give you that peace! The 3rd song from his album Indigo, again another masterpiece! A self reflection, poetry, work of art! RM IS HIP HOP! You got it right! He is my bias wrecker hahah my bias is Yoongi/Agust D/ Suga, also a beast!! Thanks for your reaction!! 💜💜💜
1. You happened to choose one song from each of his mixtape/album. "Joke" is from "RM" (2015), "Moonchild" from "mono" (2018), and "Still Life" from "Indigo" (2022). And I think they're quite representative of each mixtape/album, which are very different from one another. "RM" is aggressive rap, "mono" is quite chill, and in "Indigo" each song is actually of a different genre. RM is a versatile artist, with an obviously clear vision about his music. Eight of the ten tracks in "Indigo" have feature artists, who fit perfectly with the concept and the genre of each song. Listening to the album from top to bottom will take you on a delightful journey through the genres. 2. Suga has a talkshow called "Suchwita" and some of the members have been his guests. I love the episodes with RM. You can witness two music geniuses have a casual conversation about their music. In episode 1 RM promoted "Indigo", while in episode 9 Suga promoted "D-Day". And of course I love the episodes with Jimin and Jin. In episode 7, Jimin promoted his album "Face". Such a fun episode where you can see how they are comfortable with each other, true brothers. In episode 12, Jin recorded it four days before his enlistment, where they talk about more general stuff. 3. I know you want to move on to other members, but because you've talked about how the BTS rap line feel like true hip hop artists who also happen to be K-pop idols, I think you would enjoy a BTS song called "Hip Hop Phile" or "Hip Hop Lover", where the rap line talk about their relationship with hip hop, as well as their influences, both Korean and Western rappers.
YES RM IS HIP HOP!!
With all of BTS I'm always so impressed that not only do they all switch their lyric lines between Korean and English..or Japanese... but they always find a word or phrase in Korean that will end matching to the previous line end of the English.... it's so clever...but must take them forever to complete just one song.... very talented people.. All that RM and Yoongi wanted back in the beginning was to prove that they could still keep their hip hop roots whilst being an Idol... and they have.. over and over and over... Army are so very proud of them ... all of them... but particularly the rap line... for that reason....
18:59 exactly: hip hop artists that are also idols, it's because other groups made those who can't sing a designated rapper. Suga even mentions this in their first songs: you rappers because you can't sing😅
I'm sad Seoul wasn't done, it's my favorite song from him but he has so many great ones so I'm sure it was hard to pick from. I expected Joke because thats always everyones go to for his solo work. RM is my bias wrecker, his visuals 🥵.
I recommend you do a full listen to mono like you did for agust d - it’s only 7 songs so really managebale, but it’s so cohesive and emotional and the lyrics are gorgeous. I know you mainly vibed to the beats at this first listen (understandable, the beats are great!) but his lyrics are very much what make him stand out to me. Still Life is a little bit about haters, but mainly about how his life is on constant display like a still life painting in a museum, but he can’t fully be captured on canvas (= video, photos) because he’s always growing and moving and living. He LOVES visual art and collects a lot of paintings, he’s talked about how he’s considering opening or sponsoring an art gallery later on in his career - especially to bring attention to Korean painters and artists. (It’s interesting how you see him as an “american soul performing in korean”, when i’d almost say the opposite. I think because he’s fluent in english and inspired by american art, many see him at first glance as “foreign”/westernised, but especially in recent years he’s been very clear about his korean identity and korean pride (especially culture - like the history and paintings and music), and talks about how exhausting it is to speak English all the time when they’re in america and how he always prefers talking and writing in Korean. In his solo livestreams, there are 100s of comment spams saying “talk english pls” and it’s so satisfying to see him say no, he wants to speak korean, read the translations later 😆)
on your comment about RM's music feeling like real hiphop, he legit grew up with western hip hop so his roots go all the way back to straight up authentic rap. His idol is Nas and he clearly takes so much inspiration from him. Even recently 2 years ago he said it again in an interview and rapped one of his verses. You also said a similar thing about Suga/Agust D, and J-hope's idol was Jcole who he collabed with recently too
Including English in Korean pop culture is as old as English education in Korea, aka 1883 on. This influence continued to solidify after WWII when Korea was occupied by the USA. English lyrics were present in Seo Taiji and Boys' (the very first K-pop group) music in the early 90s, loooooong before Namjoon's time. BTS may have "paved the way" for a lot of things in kpop, but let's not get carried away giving them credit for something they most certainly did not do.
I have the biggest soft spot for RM, like he’s so cool, smart and artistic but an insane rapper and hip hop head. He feels like hip hop bc he understands it, same with Jhope and I don’t even consider them kpop bc it’s just not the same !
18:57 This is the exact tension that both RM and Suga had to resolve for themselves. They are hiphop artists. They are rappers. That's their start and their art, especially starting out. I think what you're trying to say is RM is authentic. He's not putting on a show or trying to fit a style. He's honed his style to be him expressing his art authentically (and I'm not comparing because I don't follow K-Pop or pop in general, I just really love BTS and all 7 members). RM and Suga didn't sign with Bighit to be Idols originally. BTS was supposed to be a hiphop group without dancing, etc. and then the project changed, and they had to evolve with it and decided that they wanted to be that bridge between underground and Idol...but they received a lot of hate both from the Industry for not being Idol enough and from other rappers for being "sell-outs".
13:10 technically it's Lyric video not a music video. Some songs have no official music videos but have lyric videos. Jhopes album Jack I n the box also has them for example
RM is known for his wordsmanship....his lyrics are so poignant....try to get a good translation....it will help u understand RM's depth ....and how his two mixtape dovetails into his solo album Indigo..
The first song is called "joke" not rap monster (sometimes titles are written in hangul beside the artist name) Edit: also yea they're all indeed very handsome men (tho we like them for more than that of course). They're music, lyrics, sincerity, and personalities is what drew me in after all
Joke is not early BTS stuff. It's not even really early Namjoon stuff. He was an underground rapper years prior to debut. I mean, showing up to rap battles in velcro-strap tennis shoes, very early teen years early. Joke is just one of his earliest post-debut productions.
if it says "auto-generated" when you click the CC button that means there are no added subtitles. So never keep "auto-generated" subtitles on. For 'Joke' you can search "RM Joke eng sub" and there are a channel that uploaded it with their translation which is good and even has some explanation to some lines that are lost in translation. Auto-generated subtitles kind of works if you choose english on something spoken in slow and clear english because it is a tool for hearing impaired so it "listens" and types out what it hears but even then it gets words wrong since it's auto-generated by a program and not added subtitles and it's absolutely not translations.
Still, life is way deeper than just talking about haters. BTS - their strength lies in lyricism. So just glancing at lyrics is not going to work as well for BTS videos. You need to look at a breakdown. Still life: RM opened up about a visit to an art museum that inspired him to write thing song. "I saw a title called 'Still Life.' Actually, a lot of paintings were titled 'Still Life.' And I felt really strange because it was like the painting in the 19th century by Monet or Van Gogh or Cézanne. So the flower, as a model of the painting, is dead a century ago, but it's still alive in the painting by the painters themselves. So they gave the eternal birth or life to the flowers by painting. So when I see 'Still Life' like a canvas, because my life is like a canvas. I'm exhibiting my life to the whole world everywhere . . . but 'Still Life' is stuck on the canvas, but it's alive and eternal, but it's still moving forward. So it's about a still life that's still moving forward."
For RM you really have to pay alot of attention to his lyrics cause this man write poetrys and some deep shit which u really have to pay attention to fully understand not just vibe to his mv and music cause he's one of the best lyricist i have ever seen..😇🙂

RM is my bias wrecker, his visuals 🥵.
moonchild is that song, i love it, his lyrics, his message, his vulnerability.
RM & Suga were underground rappers before their debut
RM’s music is hip-hop, so true. He is a hip-hop artist. We get you. ✨
on your comment about RM's music feeling like real hiphop, he legit grew up with western hip hop so his roots go all the way back to straight up authentic rap. His idol is Nas and he clearly takes so much inspiration from him. Even recently 2 years ago he said it again in an interview and rapped one of his verses. You also said a similar thing about Suga/Agust D, and J-hope's idol was Jcole who he collabed with recently too
Man, when you said "Moonchild"in is 'vibey' when everytime I hear it, it breaks me a little then comforts me too at the same time..
Just wanna say: Joon originally wanted to be a poet.
Rm is my bias....
More RM gonna pitch a tent and wait now !!
Rap god Joon🔥🔥Bts rapline are the best rappers in kpop..I'ts not bcoz i'm a hard stan of them..Its bcoz they are the best😎no one can beat them
13:10 technically it's Lyric video not a music video. Some songs have no official music videos but have lyric videos. Jhopes album Jack I n the box also has them for example
Thank god you did Joke - THANK GOD it's so good. Killer Mike sends his regards
Both rm and suga were underground rappers
Cypher part 2 was when I realized he's a genius at rap.
Omg you REALLY need the proper lyrics for Joke…. They are amazing 😂💜
The first song is actually called "Joke", there's another song called "Rap Monster" tho
RM is known for his wordsmanship....his lyrics are so poignant....try to get a good translation....it will help u understand RM's depth ....and how his two mixtape dovetails into his solo album Indigo..
BTS RM'S MOONCHILD will be played on SPACE FOR THE APPOLLO ANNIVERSARY ❤ i think 3-4 BTS songs were choosen.
14:55 it's Anderson Paak
The first song is called "joke" not rap monster (sometimes titles are written in hangul beside the artist name)
Edit: also yea they're all indeed very handsome men (tho we like them for more than that of course). They're music, lyrics, sincerity, and personalities is what drew me in after all
Everythinggoes is my #1 and mono overall is so beautiful
This is why wE say the BTS rap line is top tier
Persona its amazing
Rm is best ❤
Please reaction to BTS - Jin - Epiphany and Astronaut Mv and live - Awake live - Abyss, Moon, Tonight lyrics
Joke is not early BTS stuff. It's not even really early Namjoon stuff. He was an underground rapper years prior to debut. I mean, showing up to rap battles in velcro-strap tennis shoes, very early teen years early. Joke is just one of his earliest post-debut productions.
the lyrics of joke would have murdered you
if it says "auto-generated" when you click the CC button that means there are no added subtitles.
Do you have a discord? There’s so much I want to explain and recommend but I don’t want to leave endless comments lmao
👍💜💜💜
7:21. 7:22
Well rm ( namjoon ) and august d ( yoongi ) were underground rappers before
