they are prolly all dead or dying. i guess one outta 10 may have taken the problem seriously and lost the weight. weight loss seems impossible, until you quit sugar then the pounds just roll off. keto, and the carnivore diets are powerful tools in this regard. get on them even if you aren't fat. i myself have dropped 30 pounds in 6 months and have gained enormous unexpected health benefits. blood pressure, shortness of breath, acid reflux, vision, sleep, energy, motivation, all these are normal now. there are other things i am not even aware of i am sure have improved. my father had type 2 diabetes, so i took the hint. plus i fit into my 40 year old waist size 32 high school jeans again. btw, exercise has wonderful health benefits, but weight loss isn't one of them. it's all in the low carb diet.

Okay, I take full responsibility for the way I am. It took years and years of eating whatever, whenever I wanted and little to no exercise. For that, I am obese. it IS my responsibility, it IS my fault and I am currently doing something now about it. BUT, no one likes to be treated with indifference. NO ONE likes to be called names. NO ONE likes to be sabotaged as others frequently try to get me to stop doing what I'm doing which is taking care of myself after years of not. But I know how society in general is. It's sad and I wish others were kinder, but it's NOT that way and I dont think it will ever be any different. What I CAN do, is take care of myself now, eat healthier, exercise and do my very best to ignore all the nay sayers, abusers and idiots who still treat me like crap even though I'm changing my lifestyle for the better. Have a great day!

I am formerly obese. 90% of my entire family is obese. It is a complete lack of self control, discipline, and self responsibility. Everybody in this video wants special rights because they refuse to admit their problem and take responsibility for themselves. Apparently, wallering in self pity is okay.

I think a lot of people don't understand that some obese people are obese because they turn to food to cope with emotional problems. It's like how some people turn to alcohol to numb themselves. Yes, technically it is them harming themselves. However stress from something they have little control of, such as domestic abuse is real and different people cope with it differently.
I witnessed my parents fight violently a lot when I was a kid. No neighbor dare to intervene. I was neglected and left to myself. To help myself forget the bad stuff I see, I ate junk food. Junk food during my childhood was really cheap. For example, nutella spread in small tubs cost 30cent each. Eating junk food while watching TV help me feel safe, cos of the association between them. I know deep down it was fake but I rather have that than looking at my mother staring into space.
The authorities here don't really want to deal with domestic abuse unless blood is spilled. I considered it fortunate that both my parents passed away early. Their feud finally ended. I started to gain control my life and learn to be healthier and more functional. I am better now. What about those who are still stuck?

    • @HappyWoWer
      @HappyWoWer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Yes I agree different people have different ways of comforting themselves.
Now lets switch the story a little bit. Put your situation onto somebody else but that person chose to comfort themselves with alcohol and heroin. Nobody would be telling this person that they are okey and they can't help what they do. Nobody would defend them. But for some reason people who are obese due to comfort eating is put on a pedestal above alcoholics and drug takers even though they may use their chosen substance to cope.
At the end of the day using any substance, be that food, alcohol or drugs to cope with a situation is not healthy. People shouldn't wait to regain control once stress has gone and instead be more responsible for their health and deal with the situation constructively.

Give me a big fat break. I need to lose about 80 pounds, and it's MY FAULT that I do. I ate too damn much. I don't have a "disease" that's not my fault somehow. I was born a normal size and was a normal size until several years ago, when I decided to EAT MORE FOOD. I used to smoke, too, and even though that was an addiction, I couldn't go "It's not my fault that I smoke," either, because I could quit.
If that woman was on a bus and a homeless guy who's not bathed in weeks went to sit next to her, she'd be going, "eww" when she saw him and not wanting him to sit next to her. All the people who have negative comments need to look at themselves first and also think about others and how what they say really impacts their self-esteem, I was once slightly overweight and I know that stress and self-esteem are a big part of how much you weigh. I just hope that the media and the public realize that obese and overweight people are still people and most are very kind, and easy to talk to. The people with extremely negative comments, be glad to know that I have reported you, because your derogatory comments and hate are most definitely not necessary.

I applaud you as a man because when I was a young adult, I would watch men make fun of their friends who had a belly or gained a little weight after marriage, etc. I was married at the time and it would happen to my husband. I asked him if it bothered him because I could see that it did. He denied it but I knew it did. Men have feelings too but I get they try to act like it doesn't matter where women are constantly compared to Hollywood standards although we have babies and women love a "dad bod." I love the celebrities who come out and say, the covers they do, are not the real them. That half of them is cut off or their untoned skin is covered, their veins are covered, the cellulite and stretch marks are covered, etc. It isn't reality, yet, they make people think it is. Maybe everyone wouldn't think so less of themselves and think they had to look so perfect all the time, if magazines and tv wasn't making everyone look perfect. I find myself judging myself and I need to remember that I am 49 and I am a real person. I love the real actors that are just who they are and it sucks because we say this and it makes them feel like they are less than because then they think they aren't as good where in reality, I just know the rest are fake. They are using waist trainers, glam teams, private physical trainers, implants, botox, etc. There's nothing real about them. Real people are not perfect. Fake people aren't either but they are made to look that way. Sorry for the long post. I just appreciated a man's view and the fact that you reported the inconsiderate rude people.

    • @QueenBlond
      @QueenBlond 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

WELambert01 Perhaps “spewing hatred” was too strong a phrase, but your comment illustrates that you have not understood my point. These people know they’re fat/obese etc. Pointing it out by shaming them will not cause them to lose weight (as counterintuitive as this may seem). There have been a vast array of studies proving this. If we want to combat the global obesity epidemic wouldn’t it be logical to go about it in a way that actually works? These people need emotional help first of all - that’s the root of the problem. Perhaps more than anyone else, these people need love, no matter how much someone like you thinks they don’t deserve it. Also fat people (BMI still under 25) aren’t necessarily “dying”. I hope that one day you’ll get where I’m coming from.

I have a problem with the tone of victimization in this video.
Exchange the word "obese" or "overweight" with the word "smoker" or "alcoholic," and tell me what the differences are.
Predisposed by genetic factors? So is tobacco and alcohol addiction. Faced with stigma and bias? Influenced by parenting styles? Made prevalent by society and marketing? Portrayed badly in the media? Limits your freedom in work and social settings? Difficult to change or manage? So is tobacco and alcohol addiction. The only difference could be bullying. We don't bully addicts because we've established that these people have a medical and/or psychological problem and need help, but neither do we excuse their condition or portray them as victims.
If we begin to live in a society where hurt feelings and the rhetoric of victimization supplants reason and personal responsibility, we will deserve the inevitable downturn that will follow.

Not true for me. I was fat at age 12 because I chose to eat a whole box of Captain Crunch and a half gallon of milk while watching Saturday morning cartoons. I would drink a liter of Coke a day. I also ate a lot at regular healthier mealtimes. But I also consumed a lot of junk in between meals. My dad one day told me that I was growing tits and he was right. That comment truly hurt because it was true. I asked him to buy me a York Barbell set for Christmas and gave him my own shopping list for groceries and healthier food that I wanted to eat during the week. Reducing carbs and sugar was key. I started walking to and from school instead of taking the bus, jumping rope and lifting some weights at home and I lost all that fat and weight in a very short time. My father with his cutting tough love comment put a fire under my ass. I could never have thanked him enough for that.

However, that is still not an excuse to go out and insult these people. I used to be overweight, not obese but i do understand some of their struggles, i did lose that weight and now i am more fit and athletic looking and i must mention that this prejudice is on both sides, i have also had random fat people comment on how "lucky" i am to be "skinny bitch" or how it's not in my genetics to be fat,. They don't see the hours i spend at the gym, they don't see my daily dietary choices and think i am the way i am just by magic too,

I also believe in personal responsibility.
But there is no denying that the odds are stacked against usa citizens. For one the food marketing to make people eat more is merciless compared to other western nations. Secondly the portion sizes eating out and at home are substantially bigger. American plates are humongous. Also it is very normal to eat anywhere anytime. Food is everywhere where you walk, can buy anytime at any corner.
In my country it is frowned upon to walk around in public with food or a drink in your hand. Also everything is giantsized in america. For example the carton box of cereals are huuuugge, I have never seen anyhing like it.
It is also epigenitically inherited by children if their parent were obese during pregnancy.
Raise an american kid in another country and the likelyhood of him becoming obese decreases dramatically.

@@sj0nnie The biggest problem, in my opinion, is Americans don't exercise. Yes, fast food and large portions are playing a large role, but it is difficult to truly become obese if you are physically active. Plus, physical activity decreases stress levels and overall makes you feel better. It is no secret that many people eat food for comfort due to stress. When you are physically active you will naturally be less inclined to adopt an eating style that will make you fat.

Please understand how quickly you can become overweight after a medical issue, steroid medication, or pregnancy/miscarriage. I went from a size 00 at 108 pounds with hip bones sticking out to 226 pounds in a little over a year after a miscarriage and severe mold allergies which led to my doctor prescribing me a lot of steroids. And a lot of the weight gain was absolutely my fault. I was very depressed after my miscarriage and ate emotionally. I am now getting back into a healthy weight category, but damn I never knew how hard it was as I've never had to lose this much weight. I also had a friend whose twin babies died at 38 weeks. She was in another part of the country than me at the time than me, but I could only imagine the pain if anyone commented on her weight gain from the twins after she had to bury her 2 babies. I've forever changed my thoughts about anyone overweight. Focus on your own self- you don't know someone's else's whole story.

I run a menswear store in Melbourne for big men and have no medical qualifications but am a long time recovering alcoholic and openly discuss this with customers. If a customer talks about their weight gain/loss, it is often very similar to my struggle with alcoholism; eating too much even though they know what it's doing to them but paradoxically for a short time feeling good and then the feelings of guilt, shame and remorse. I don't know about the genetics of obesity but I do know what it's like to not be able to stop doing what is killing you and destroying your life and hurting those around you. I think that we look for easy answers to problems today and even well meaning people are wont to say things like "Eat less and exercise more", and that is the answer, however if it was that simple all overweight people would do it, just like all alcoholics would stop drinking.

I grew up obese in high school and most of my childhood. Somehow I lost it all in my first semester of college. Even though physically I wasn't obese, "mentally" I still was... It was hard suddenly dealing with guys walking up to me and talking to me, that I hated them for ignoring me before when I wasn't as skinny. Society isn't fair, sometimes people think the way they do just because other people think it's okay. It's taken a while for me to accept other people, but that was a major lesson to be learned about discrimination and how hard it is to fight it.

Obesity isn't normal and it does effect ones health that same that being underweight would also effect your health. There is only a small portion of people who are over weight because of health related issues. No one wakes up being 300 pounds overnight. We live in a time of calorie counting apps, fitness trackers and all the other shit you need to determine if you're eating above or below maintenance. You don't need exercise, you don't need "a diet", heck you don't even need healthy food. The only thing you need to do is take in less energy than your body exerts every day. Yes, being hungry sucks but it stops after a couple of days or weeks at worst. Just drink a lot of water, tea and coffee and you'll be okay.

For this I was labeled lazy, a drug addict (even though I managed to wean off the drugs with little problem) and all sorts of derogatory stereotypes, even being told I my pain isn't "that bad." And this from family! While it isn't visible most times, it is a stigma all the same. I sympathize with those struggling with weight issues.

The thing that bugs me about analysis like this - is that being overweight is discussed as if it's like being born with no legs. Something that you never chose and can't do anything to change. As soon as you decide to put your body into a calorie deficit, you'll start to lose weight. And if you're *very* overweight, then you don't even need to make huge changes.
As someone who has been significantly overweight for many years, who has a crazy sweet-tooth, who always hated exercise and who had depression as well: I felt utterly exasperated by this mentality.

I'm sorry for for being so defensive. You obviously meant well. However, just because a person may be thin, doesn't mean that they are healthy on the inside. They could have a clogged artery for example. And just becuase someone may be overweight or obese doesn't mean they are the most unhealthy person. They might have a healthy heart for example. It can go either ways for both sides. I hope I'm not coming off as argumentive or anything. I hope we can part on this on good terms. :)

    My two cents...
    1) I agree with this documentary wholeheartedly that it is deplorable to make fun of people who are overweight. That’s neither helpful nor kind. Period.
    2) Now, what people should do is have POSITIVITY and ENCOURAGEMENT for their overweight friends and family members. Because (as this documentary also shows) nobody wants to be overweight. We want our heavier loved ones to participate in active events in our lives and stay around long enough to have fulfilling lives themselves.
So, when you call someone fat and lazy, that’s wrong. But also, when say “someone’s weight is their own business,” you’re completely OVERLOOKING that person’s children, spouse, parents, friends, coworkers, medical bills, and multitude of other diseases that come with obesity. This goes beyond social acceptance and cosmetics (speaking to the people who only see criticism as a hurtful thing).
I feel like the answer is to approach this subject with both KINDNESS and ACCOUNTABILITY.
“Attacking the problem of obesity while not attacking the people who have it.”

Did the self-righteous commentators below watch the whole segment before posting their opinions? Nowhere in the video does anyone say that obesity is healthy or to be encouraged. The message is that stigmatizing and shaming fat people does nothing to help them deal with their food issues.
“Nobody can eat just one” is more than a potato chip slogan.
If you’ve never bought the latest smart phone or any other heavily-advertised device which absolutely no one needs-if you’ve never bought ridiculously overpriced sneakers or trendy workout gear or a hipster handbag or hipster car or anything else you’ve been conditioned to purchase-then you might have some validity. But you pseudonymous, judgmental jerks cannot in all honesty claim to be immune, can you?
So why don’t you get real and throw the blame for the modern rise in obesity at marketers and agribusinesses and fast food conglomerates and all the mega-industries which make billions from selling addictive junk food in Western and Westernized countries?
I am far from obese, but to me, anyone who would proclaim that obese folks have only themselves to blame-y’all are so much uglier than any fat person I’ve ever seen.

Also certain medications favor weight gain, so does depression. It's good to see a comforting video like this. Fat people in general just feel bad every time they take their clothes off or walk around skinny people, they feel shameful that they are the odd one out and my belief is to shame them further, we should make them feel bad because in the long run we are actually doing them a favour by making them think twice before embarking on the daily pilgrimage to every fast food restaurant in their town/City.

In our family company, we have two very obese employees. One guy is very hard-working and capable. The other guy is 100% the problem obese employee. To all those who discriminate others for having an issue: imagine yourself being in their shoes and going through every day what they go through. You are making their life a hell - if you'd be in their situation only for one single day, imagine how you'd feel about it yourself. That's why I say: Treat everyone how you would want to be treated yourself - people's weight is their own business, noone else's.

This is because they had a plan for us, they monitored us monthly, they were our cheerleaders, if we didn't do well for a month, it was ok, etc. I still go monthly because it helps me. I don't have to, I could go every 3 months due to my Cushing's Disease and Thyroid Disease that she found and nobody else looked for but I need their wonderful faces in my life because they care. When I started there, I got right in. The NP had just opened up. She had worked for an Endocrinologist physician prior to that and now between me and my girls and I am sure many others, through our words, she has a constant waiting list because she has done such a wonderful job for women and men. She has people of all sizes working for her and to watch them too lose the weight is so inspiring! The few days a week, 15-20 mins each time, that I do a little bit of working out from a youtube channel of a hippie girl who loves to groove, makes my endorphins skyrocket but so does dancing in my living room with my gkids. The difference is obesity is self inflicted. Regardless of if you comfort eat or just lazy and eat a ton of junk food it's self inflicted.
You've tried to relate it to heart disease, cancer, liver disease, kidney disease and diabetes because people have an increased risk due to poor eating tendencies. This is moronic as you don't have to be unhealthy to get any of these health issues. Cancer can be caused by nearly anything. People can be born with diabetes, liver and kidney disease can be hereditary. These health risks are out of peoples control. Yes some choices can increase the risk but not necessarily cause it. There is a difference between correlation and causation.
Overeating junk food and not exercising always leads to obesity. It's a 100% chance.
This is why obese people are looked at as disgusting and people with cancer are not. Obese people cause the issue them self.

what this video is trying to say is that you cant judge them because you don't know what they have been through in their lives.
there are a lot of factors involved including emotional eating which is worsened when you treat them like shit for being that way. maybe if people were taught to love themselves they would be more inclined to want to take care of their bodies. it is really difficult to get out a cycle of comfort eating when you are constantly told that you are a worthless piece of shit.
it is also incredible how many people don't even know what eating healthy entails. they think that eating light mayo will make them skinny. what we need as a society is more health education.

Sure, some people have thyroid issues which makes it more difficult, some have economic issues with multiple jobs and kids that make it more difficult, but EVERY person has some power in some form or another to fight excess weight. EVERY person, especially in modern day America, absolutely does. Anyone who says "I can't" and is just making excuses. Even people below the poverty line can find the time and mental energy. This nation has a weight problem but also an even bigger excuse problem.
You CANNOT lump this in with race and gender bias or discrimination. It simply isn't the same. Show me a fat person and I guarantee you that if that person took on a serious form of eating more naturally, economically, and added even a SMALL amount of **ROUTINE** exercise (none of this gym once a month nonsense), then some pounds would drop. It's just human genetics. It's science, it DOES happen. And this person may come to be inspired by the lost weight, even if its 5 pounds, and may strive to do more.
Berating others does not solve this problem, but honestly patience, inspiration and love does. Still, even with that there could be a helm of mental and emotional issues that make it difficult where it doesn't need to be. Any man or woman married to an overweight person can see what I'm talking about. Some people are too f**king proud and stubborn to see truth right in front of their faces. This is just the way the human heart is.

I don't understand why so many people hate obese people but 66% of people in US are overweight / obese 🤔

I found the silver bullet to weight loss. I'm 6'2 - In April, I was 190 lbs, now in early June, I'm currently 183 lbs. Here's my strategy:
    Step 1: eat less calories.
    Step 2: exercise.
Seriously folks, sorry, it's not easier than that, but putting the fork down is not that hard. Instead of bringing food to your face, don't. You don't even need the exercise part, I still lost 2 lbs last week and didn't visit the gym a single time. It's calorie in, calorie out. It's that simple. No, genetics don't matter, nothing else matters. It's will power. If you think you don't eat enough to justify your large size, you don't realize how much you're eating. If you so much as eat a single grape, write it down and count it. It all adds up! Get a food scale and weigh everything. Measure every ingredient, write it all down in a journal and see how many calories that handful of peanuts you didn't even consider to be food really is. If you think this sounds unhealthy to be this concerned about your eating, what's more unhealthy, eating whatever the hell you want and being in denial of it, or being conscious of every bite you take and being a healthy weight?
You can lie to yourself, but you can't lie to your body or the scale. It's science, the fat is stored energy. If you have extra lbs, it means you have extra stored energy and calories are the energy and they don't come from thin air (or fat air). You have to put those calories there for them to be stored away. The sooner you accept reality that you are responsible for the amount of calories you've put in your body, the sooner you can make changes to fix it.

What happen to live and let live? If someone is obese, don't you think they know they are obese and know they have a lot of health and social issues to deal with. I warned my wife ,a long time ago, that after society targeted smokers---obese people would be next. My wife use to smoke and I'm thankful she quit several years ago. I'm overweight, and have been for most of my life. But I've been losing weight for the past six months. And I don't blame anyone for my issues but I'm changing. You can 2

I love all of the medical professionals posting saying that obesity isnt a disease.
When my doctor said I was obese I told him I ate healthy and exercised. My blood pressure was below "normal" but he just kept saying to me "when you used to be active..." like I'm not active anymore and havent been, when I told him probably 5 times that I was currently physically active. I mean my blood pressure was lower than normal, I was 53 at the time and he just couldnt get it through his head that I'm physically active... that I work out. Its pathetic.

it is impossible to be obese if you truly eat healthy & exercise. you are either in denial and/or have a distorted view on what eating healthy actually is.

You can't be obese and have a fruit/veggie/lean protein diet and work out. It's not possible. It's actually REALLLLLLY not.

What exactly is your exercise regime and your diet and proportions, It's not possible to have a decent exercise and good diet and still be obese (not just a bit overweight im talking obese) unless you have insulin resistance or some other health issue that is stopping you from losing that weight,

45 minutes of StairMaster and about 20 minutes of lifting weights. I was pushing 35 pound dumbbells at the time. Healthy meaning vegetarian or vegan. I have been a vegetarian since 1990. I think most of you are probably under 45 so you dont really have any concept. Wait till you get older, then remember your statements.

I do feel like crying with these people. Seeing the tears in their eyes breaks my heart too. I'm slightly overweight (I'm down at 184 and trying to go into the 170s.) I'm trying to change my diet and increasing exercise (walking, dancing, 30 day plank challenge.) During a party, My dad said to me one time to lose weight (in a teasing manner.) I wanted to scream and yell at him back. However, he apologized afterwards, which was nice. I do agree that personal responsbility is one of the factors that affects weight, but name calling people who are overweight and obese is not cool at all.

Obesity.... disease.......Maybe, like 1-3% of the time, but the rest of the time wise up and quit making excuses. I'm not shaming at all but I've worked and lived with fat people (I don't say fat in a hateful way but that's what it is and what they are to put it bluntly, fat) and they are lazier, slower, less productive and generally I'm not a fan. I don't prejudge people but most fit the same mould, go on different "diets" but don't understand how much 1 snickers per day can equate to or the popular "I love my food too much"- so do I, I also love my xbox but part of what makes it more enjoyable is savouring the moment through mature restriction of access. Watching tv all day and not moving is unhealthy, so is lying in bed all day etc etc.- why are we not allowed to say eating a lot and doing nothing to burn it off is bad? :/

We cannot accept obesity because of how unhealthy it is. We need to treat obesity different from how we treat people who are overweight because there is a huge difference.

  • @KaleidoscopeEffect

There is a difference between treating an epidemic and bullying the patients. Many are obese because their parents imposed that kind of lifestyle to them. It's not ok to generalize, it's not ok to stigmatize.
